p: 170-171 Alter Egos 2003-ongoing Each: two silver-plated objects, one flattened by a 250-ton industrial press, wire Dimensions variable The Alter Egos are an ongoing series of pairs of silver-plated objects, one intact and the other flattened. Sometimes, their reflection is a double, at other times it may be a near relative. I think of them as 'domestics' not only in terms of the spaces they can occupy (hovering over the mantel or tabletop) but also in the sense of power play, where one of the objects has the upper hand. There are identity crises and class divides, ideas of life and death, inhaling and exhaling, conscious and unconscious, and reflection and shadow. Sometimes, there's a sense of a dark undertow, an underlying threat; at other times, just reflected glory. The phrase 'He who lights a candle must also cast a shadow' comes to mind.
