endings and beginnings
i gotta say, the thing i love about haikyuu is that all of the conflicts come out of the characters' choices. i'm no connoisseur of sports media, but in the sports movies i've seen before, the main character usually comes from a ~rough background~ or has major life events going on outside the matches and it's about the ability of sports to lift people up. i think writers tend to assume that's the only way to build stakes or get an audience invested. but in haikyuu, the characters play volleyball because they want to play volleyball. they could quit if it stopped being fun. all the challenges they face are challenges they've chosen because they love it, because it's worth it, even the moments of disappointment. there's obviously a place for stories about reluctant heroes or people backed into corners just trying to make it through, but there's something really refreshing about seeing a character throw themself head first into something. one of my favorite scenes is when yachi asks hinata why he wants to win so bad, and he's so confused by the question. "if I lose the season is over. i want to play volleyball."

Bonus: their hand poses match their 3rd Year Karasuno jerseys (Yachi is automatic #4, of course)
