In 1985, the president of the United States uttered the word "AIDS" for the first time. This was four years into the epidemic. More than 12,000 Americans were already dead because of his administration's neglect and inaction, including reagan's close friend, actor Rock Hudson who was dying of AIDS at the time.

This is my fourth pride month since I realized I was ace, but the first time I've really felt like celebrating. It's been a really long road to accepting who I am, but I'm glad I got here in the end :)

'Tis the third day of Pride Month, and I'm currently thinking about the guy who robbed a bank so he could pay for his trans girlfriend's gender-affirming surgery.

As the story goes, John Wojtowicz was inspired by The Godfather (and love) when he and two accomplices attempted to rob a Chase Manhattan Bank branch in Brooklyn, New York, on August 22, 1972.

Just as the safe was nearly empty, one of the accomplices walked out, triggering an alarm that resulted in a 14-hour standoff. Wojtowicz held seven employees hostage inside the bank while police, the FBI, and thousands of onlookers surrounded the building.

During this time, Wojtowicz threw money out to the cheering crowd and even ordered pizza.

He was eventually caught after trying to flee in an airport van. Wojtowicz was sentenced to 20 years in federal prison, though he served only about five.

Although his goal of paying for Elizabeth Eden's (his partner) surgery ultimately came to fruition after he received $7,500 from a film inspired by the robbery. (The film is Dog Day Afternoon, starring Al Pacino.)

roald dahl was antisemitic and misogynistic. george orwell was openly homophobic. edgar allan poe married his 13 year old cousin. dr seuss cheated on his wife (and was racist as well as antisemitic!). hp lovecraft was racist as fuck. anyways they’re fucking dead it’s not like you’re enabling their behaviors in the afterlife or something. then again I think they bleed into the books so uh keep an eye out for that

Frog and Toad Are Gay, and So Was Their Creator

So, here's a little fun fact for pride month:

Four years after Arnold Lobel released the book "Frog and Toad Are Friends", he revealed he was gay to his wife and two children, having worked up the courage to come out on the closet while writing the story.

"Frog and Toad are really two aspects of myself" - Arnold Lobel

He later separated from his wife but the two remained friends and collaborators. While Lobel was working on his final Frog and Toad book he met Howard Weiner, who would become his partner.

Frog and Toad are “of the same sex, and they love each other" - Adrianne Lobel (Arnold Lobel's daughter )

In 1987, Lobel died at the age of 54 from AIDs related complications with Weiner taking care of him during his illness. Lobel’s final picture book, The Turnaround Wind (1988), was published posthumously.
