Honest to god I feel like Killer with Nightmare have a very codependent toxic relationship with each other. Both of them bringing about the worst aspect of the other, one having a need to control and the other to please. I dont know, having saved someone from basicaly erasing their own existance within the game, having them repeat a cicle they themselves knows is bad but its whats familiar, its the usual, easier to just follow along rather than just. You know try and change. Nightmare's side is the one I'm having more touble to grasp, like what for? Having someone to follow along? So they serve and do whatever it takes to please your every demand? Feels to me they just don't want to be complety alone and wish to be in a perpetual state of misery and lashing out to the multiverse, like they say misery loves company. Almos like, noone came to save Nightmare, but they "saved" Killer, so they did good. I wonder if they saw themselves on killer? hell if I know. Alone it feels like Nghtmare would rather be completly alone, so the concept of taking others always seem, funny. The dadmare jokes are good, but also that other where he completly abuses them and all. For some reason I feel it lands somewhere in the middle. Sorta like how Doflamingo in one piece has his family, but is more like a very fucked up, abused and very umbalanced family, all to serve and die for Dofi. If Nightmare where able to... change or even redeem themselves would take a shit ton. And I dont think it should be any of the gang or dream, nor shold they firgive them. I can sorta see why maybe/sortof/perhaps Color made an almost instant impact on Killer, having asked "What do you want" insted of "Do what I ask you to do" that seems to be the standard for killer. I can imagine Color going all Iroh on Killer "Who are you? And what do you want?" sorta speech. Slaping some sense of self to Killer, no weapon, not just another character/sans and not just to be used to be then discarded. Anyways, this has been grinding my gears for a while now.

I think how it can be interpreted depends on how much you want to see nightmare as having his old self still present or if he’s fully just the corruption now, but I like to imagine he’s some mix of both. Where his old mind/experiences/memories are there but through a lens of corruption. Hmm. I see it as the abused becomes the abuser, through like, a very bitter lens.

Like you said, he would think - no one came to help me. And he was always a thing to be used by the multiverse or his mother etc - just a tool for the balance. And not just a tool, but one that was actively hated. So in ‘saving’ killer from his AU - well, he’s already got it so much ‘better’ than nightmare, in NM’s opinion? Like, look, I took you away from the bad place, sure, you’re my tool now, but you should be grateful, you have a place to stay, I give you some small freedoms and companionship. I never got that. So say thank you. You want to leave? Ungrateful!

And I think saying he sees himself in him is bang-on. He can feel morally superior in this, like a twisted version of trying to heal his inner child - while simultaneously being abusive b/c self-loathing. Cognitive dissonance innit.

I see this version of NM as being someone who is so hurt and bitter and buried in his own pain (the corruption amplifying and feeding those feelings) that he becomes too selfish to empathise with anyone else’s suffering, and he uses that to justify his behaviour. As well as almost any kind of terrible actions being ‘justifiable’ in the purpose of doing his ‘duty’ to the balance. I think that feeling of being outraged and ‘correct’ is very addictive for someone like him.

TL;DR, as a child, if you’ve ever had an adult in your life who had a hard upbringing tell you you can’t complain about a single thing ever because it’s not like you had it as bad as they did…that’s how I see it. But a super evil version ^^;
