Nunnally really wanted to give Sunny something beautiful for her birthday. She could buy her friend anything, but it felt wrong for Nunnally. She wanted the gift to special and not necessarily expensive. But she could do so little. Embroidery and crotchet were her only useful skills; perhaps also drawing but she was not so sure about it.
She was not happy with whatever idea she had, but finally there was a time she had to give up. It was winter so she decided to make Sunny a winter set: a hat, a scarf, gloves and matching socks. And then Nunnally also decided to make a skirt. All adorned with sunflowers. They were so suitable for Sunny. It took her many sleepless nights as it was the first time, she ever tried any of those. She tried and tried again, and again, but finally the present was ready. Was she really satisfied with it? Nunnally did not know.
“Happy Birthday Sunny!” – she smiled as she entered Sunny’s room in the morning without knocking – “Get up, Sunny. It is your birthday and I want to be the first one to celebrate it with you.” – she said hugging her friend, handing her a nicely wrapped box hiding the pieces of hand-made clothing and an extremely large bouquet of sunflowers!
“Happy Birthday Sunny!” – she said smiling happily, although a bit hesitant inside if her present would not be too much; after all giving clothes is not too appropriate…
A sleepy and groggy Sunny sat up in bed, rubbing at her eyes. Once Nunnally's words reach her ears though, energy fills her body and suddenly she's wide awake.
'Oh, that's right... today is my birthday!'
The fact excited her. Winter had always been her least favorite season. The cold weather and shortened, dark days often left her feeling somber, but days like her birthday and Christmas brought warmth and happiness to her heart, making up for the harsh cold outside.
She hugged Nunnally back. The fact that she had remembered her birthday and was so excited to celebrate brought out a content giggle to erupt from Sunny's lips.
"You got me a gift? Aww, you really didn't hafta, y'know?"
Despite her words, her twinkling eyes and fingers looming towards the gift box showed just how excited she was to receive something from Nunnally.
Brimming with anticipation, she made quick work of the ribbon binding the cover to the box, and opened it up.
"Ah! Sunflowers, my favorite! And they look so healthy too!"
She held them in her hands, smelling the flowers then put them in a empty vase and filled it with water, placing it down on her coffee table.
After skipping around the room and analyzing the flowers from different angles, she came back to her friend's side, looking back to the box to see there was more inside.
"Ehhh? You got me even more stuff?"
Peering back into the box, her eyes widened, filled with surprise.
"Oh..." she exclaimed softly, so soft you'd barely hear it.
In her hands, she held the scarf, feeling the fabric and spinning it through her fingers to inspect the pattern. She stared down in silence. But after a few moments, she wraps it around her neck and puts on the gloves.
"These clothes... you made 'em yourself right?"
Her smiling lips are covered by the scarf, but the way her eyes crinkle, its obvious she's absolutely elated.
"...thank you so much, Nunnally! I love it!"
