37. Paramedic at Providence Peak Memorial.

“It’s usually a good go to.” She grinned and looked at his mother. “I’d love that. He said you wouldn’t share the recipe with me.” She smiled before looking over at his father and stayed quiet as they talked. Asher waved to everyone as they headed out and she let out a sigh as they were, once again, alone in his place. Well, except for Chazz. She turned to him and touched his cheek. “Hey, you have nothing to apologize for, okay?” She kissed his lips. “Better than them almost catching us having sex on your couch? Yeah, I think there could’ve been better timing.” She laughed and wrapped her arms around his neck. “You okay? You seem tense? You okay with going out there? I can fake sick and maybe you can take care of me if you want to get out of it.”

“

Sunny couldn’t help but smile when he heard her words. If this had happened to anyone else, he probably would have seen the humor, but since it was his family making an embarrassing first impression on his girlfriend, it was far more painful than it was amusing. He  nodded wrapping his arms around her waist to pull her closer. “Yeah. It’s just....” he sighed. He was worried about what she would think of them. and in turn what she would think of him. “They can be a little overwhelming. Even to me, and I’m related to them.” he smirked and pressed a kiss to her lips. “Tempting, but they did come all this way. I should at least make an appearance  If you don’t want to come, then I completely understand.” In a perfect world, he would have had a lot of time to prepare his girlfriend for the first meeting of his family and they would accept her and she would accept them but truthfully, he was worried about both. “We could stay here, and finish what we started. We may just have time.” he suggested with a smile before kissing her again. As much as he wanted to, the possibility of having his parents walk was a bit too distracting at the moment.

“Yeah. Never had it before so I’m hoping it will get better once this one is out of me. Because if not, I will literally go crazy,” she admitted with a soft sigh. Alicia had thought she would tolerate it, that it would be nothing but a minor discomfort, but the larger her bump grew the worse it got. “I’m doing everything. It’s tolerable during the day, but at night? It becomes insufferable.” These days all she wanted was to just get one good night of rest. She would be happy even with just one. “I know so many things can still go wrong in the last minute, but I’m trying not to think too much about that,” Alicia told the other. It was the downfall of being a doctor and having the knowledge of all the complications that could arise and the surprises that they could face despite all the tests being normal so far. But Alicia was worrying too much about everything and that was an extra worry she had to toss aside. “That’s true. They grow up in the blink of an eye and the clothes only fit them for a few weeks at most.”

“Sunny, huh? You’d have to convince Ben about that,” she teased him back with a chuckle before nodding. “True. But I hate not being prepared and I need to at least have a list of names to choose from. Otherwise I’ll panic and name her something stupid. Sadiq is your real name?” She asked, always having known the other as Sunny.

“It’s probably just a side effect. But I can’t say I know for sure if it will go away. I honestly don’t think women get enough credit for all they have to go through.” he said shaking his head. “Hopefully your husband treats you well when all is said and done and lets you get some rest.” Sunny smiled lightly. Over his CB radio he heard his fellow EMT tell him that the patient he brought in was in recovery and in stable condition. “Copy that, it’s busy up here, so I’ll get the paper work as soon as I can.” the other answered that there was no hurry. “That’s a relief,” Sunny said to Alicia. “I almost forgot what I came here for anyways.” 

He was too tired to care too much now that he knew the patient was stable and he was almost finished his shift. At least if he was up here, no one could bother him. “And yeah. I can understand that.” he said when she mentioned being worried about last minute complications. “But at least you know which doctors here are good. You just have to make sure you get the right one who won’t screw up.” he offered, hoping to ease her fears. “And if it happens to me who is called to transport you, I’ll make sure it’s the smoothest ride you’ve ever had. At least as smooth as an ambulance ride can be.” he added with a chuckle. “Is it weird, having your baby born in the place where you work?” He was curious to know, as it wasn’t something he had thought of before even though Alicia wouldn’t be the first staff member to do so.

She took the moment and walked back into the room. She wasn’t sure what to do and she felt relief as Sunny came over and wrapped an arm around her. She was glad his family was there, but wasn’t prepared to meet them like this. It was a good thing they hadn’t showed up later because she would’ve died. And it was a good thing she didn’t give him a glossy pin-up style picture of herself. She nodded at him as he said he’d introduce her and she smiled as she looked over his family, waving to them all. “It’s wonderful to meet you. All of you.” She said with a smile before nodding at his mom as she spoke Arabic again. When Sunny talked, she touched his chest and shook her head. “It’s okay. It’s not rude.” She didn’t want to seem rude herself. She didn’t understand, yes, but she didn’t want to force the other to speak English.

“Oh, thank you.” She continued smiling and looked over at Sunny with a blush before back at his mother. “He’s amazing. He treats me very well.” Asher assured her and leaned a little more into her boyfriend. While she was still nervous, she was feeling more relaxed. She was glad the invitation to dinner was extended to her and she nodded to agree with his words. “I made it. I don’t know if it’ll compete with your hazelnut cake, but it’s a decent chocolate I think.” At least, she hoped so, but she was suddenly worried her baking skills would be looked down on by the woman.

“

“You must have known that chocolate is my favorite,” he smiled kissing her again on the cheek. His mother laughed lightly. “I see my son has been bragging about my cakes. Next time, I will definitely make some for you.” she said. Sunny’s father who was usually a man of few words spoke up. “We should go, because we have to go to the supermarket and we shouldn’t have come in unannounced.” he said. “It’s fine, Dad.” Sunny assured him. It was nice to see them. The last time was probably around Christmas last year, but the timing was not the best. He was also glad they brought the fifth wheel as he didn’t have room for everyone in his house. 

They all hugged Sunny one by one and his mother told him there were gifts for him at the camp site. “We’ll see you there soon,” Sunny said. “It was nice to meet you,” his sister Tara said. Sunny waved and watched them all get back into his parents van. Once the van was out of sight he exhaled deeply and touched his forehead. “I am so sorry.” he told Asher. “I had no idea there were going to come barging in here like that. I mean, I’m glad you got to meet them, but...I wish it was during a better situation, you know?” a small chuckle escaped him and he shook his head.

“Yeah it does,” he nodded his head as Sunny bounced the ball off the floor. Time seemed to fly when one was enjoying it and even when he had his bad days? Well, they were gone in a blink of an eye when he thought back on it. Even if in the moment they didn’t seem to go that way. “Not too exciting, nothin’ out of the ordinary for me.” Derek shrugged his shoulders. “I didn’t get out of Providence at all, but I got to photograph all the major events around town, so that’s always a blast for me. I love getting to capture those moments of pure joy.” Candid moments of many events around Providence Peak took up space on his computer hard drive for work. Derek nodded his head again, shooting the ball back to the wall as it came toward him. “I’ve been doin’ it since I was ten, I don’t know,” he shook his head as he kept his eye on the ball, swinging at it when it came back his way again, “I knew I loved it from the first moment I got on the board.” And he hadn’t really looked back. “I hope you’re enjoying it now though, I mean never too late to find something you love in life.”

“

“I bet you means you get the perk of getting into a lot of them for free, huh?” he questioned. Sunny had been to local events while on duty when stand by paramedics were required, and it wasn’t as much fun because he was at work. Still, usually a lot more enjoyable than his usual work day. “Don’t feel bad. I didn’t get out of town at all either. Although I can’t say it’s been an uneventful summer.” Although work had taken up a good chunk of his time, he was able to participate in some events, play on his softball team and had even started a relationship which was big for him. “Oh, wow. That young? It’s no wonder you’re so good at it. I think you’re in much better shape than I am, though. You must come here, what seven days a week?” he joked, cracking a smile before he swung at the ball. It bounced back at him and he caught it in his hand, like he did when playing softball, but without a glove. “It didn’t touch the ground, we’re still good.” he grinned and let the ball go from his hand.

A laugh escaped her lips and she nodded at him. “Oh, yeah? You thinking classic 50s pin up? I’m hoping that goes strictly in the bedroom because I’m only for your eyes.” She leaned into his touch and smiled bigger as he said he loved her. She, of course, told him that and while he said he felt strongly for her, this was the first time he said it. “Yeah?” She asked him and kissed him softly. “I love you too.” And she truly did. It was fast, yes, but he had made everything so much better for her in the month and a half that they had been dating. Her world had been so dark and he truly made everything so much brighter. 

She sighed as he touched her body and she kissed him deeply as he started going deeper into this. She moved as he slid her shirt off her and released a moan as he kissed her neck. Suddenly, the doorbell went off and she sighed before laughing too as he got up and opened the door. She slowly reached down and grabbed her shirt, but as she heard the voices and the Arabic, she started pulling the shirt on faster and blushed as she watched who she assumed to be his family come in. She listened to them and waved to the boys before wishing she could hide inside the couch.

Asher’s eyes went to Sunny as he explained who she was and she wasn’t sure what to do now. “Hi.” She said softly and looked at him as panic went through her as she heard him being yelled at in Arabic. “I… I’m going to get the puppy.” She said and stood to go let the dog inside. She felt out of place now and wasn’t sure if she should stick around or let them have time together. She opened the door and let the puppy in and watched him run into the living room while she took a moment and just stood in his kitchen.

Sunny couldn’t remember the last time he felt this embarrassed by his family. Granted, it happened a lot when he was a teenager but this was by far the worst. They couldn’t have had worse timing, unless they would have walked in a few minutes later. He saw his nephews run to chase the puppy who was happy to find humans who could match his energy. “What’s his name, Uncle Sunny?” one boy asked. “Uh...Chazz, I guess.” he told. He turned back to his parents. “Mom, couldn’t you have called first? If I knew you were coming to town.” She looked at him and shook her head. “Sadiq, it’s your birthday. You always loved surprises.” she told him. “Not this kind of surprise,” he muttered under his breath. 

He could see that his girlfriend appeared just as uncomfortable as him. He wanted to ease her discomfort. He put an arm around her waist to pull her close to his side and kissed her head. “I’ll introduce everyone. Those two monsters are Zayn and Kenny.” he pointed to his nephews who were petting the dog. “They belong to my brother, and he has one more baby” He pointed to the young woman “This is Tara, my sister, and these are my parents, Ahmad and Yasmin.” he motioned to his mother and father who shook her hand. His mom turned to tell him that Asher was much prettier than his last girlfriend in her language. “Mom...” he said in a tone that was begging her not to go there. “Speak English. Asher doesn’t understand Arabic so it’s kind of rude.”  The woman corrected herself and smiled at Asher. 

“I’m happy to see my son has found someone so beautiful.” she said. “Sadiq is a good boy. If he doesn’t treat you right, then you just tell me.” Sunny sighed heavily. “We brought the fifth wheel and we’re staying in a very nice place called Summit Lake. We want to invite you to come there for dinner. Both of you.” she added. “Baba will make kebobs on the barbecue.” she said referring to her husband. “That sounds perfect, Mom.” Sunny said, eager to get them out of the house for now. “And we have cake, so we can bring that.”

She smiled at him and looked into his eyes. “You don’t need any excuses to see me more. You can see me whenever you want.” She kissed him back and sighed into his lips. “I’ll happily come over to help with him. And to see you.” Asher looked around his walls and nodded. “Sounds good. We can hang it up later. Maybe I’ll get you more things too. A picture of us or something.” She turned her focus back to him and looked into his eyes. God, she had fallen for him hard. He was so great and this gift almost didn’t feel good enough to repay him for all the amazing things he was doing for her. 

“He’s not the only one.” She teased and parted her legs a little bit before looking at the puppy as he whined. “Wouldn’t dream of it.” She said and she watched as he took the puppy outside. She smiled as he came back and pulled him close. She kissed him back and grinned as she straddled him and looked into his eyes. “Good. That’s the point. I want this to be the best. I want to make every day the best for you.” She said and leaned down and kissed him. “After all, you make every day the best for me.”

“Yeah, I would like that.” he nodded to her suggestion. “Or maybe a 25x40 glossy of my girlfriend dressed in sexy lingerie like a pin up girl.” he teased, his lips curving to a smile against hers. His thumb caressed her cheek as he listened to her words. “I love you, you know that?” he said pulling away to look into her eyes.She had said it to him and although he admitted he felt the same at the time, this was probably the first time he said those words and he was surprised how easy it was. He placed a hand on the back of her neck to pull her closer and kissed her deeply, letting go a heavy sigh when their lips parted. His hands slowly reached under her top, touching her skin lightly before he raised the piece of clothing over her head. He kissed her lips firmly a small moan escaping him when he felt the warmth of her body. He started to kiss her neck. Suddenly the single sound of his door bell ringing made him stop. He resisted the urge to groan because the second interruption was definitely not welcome.

 He sighed and lifted her off of his lap to stand up. He wasn’t expecting anyone and he assumed whatever it was could wait but his door was unlocked, after all. He opened it and was suddenly blinded by an unknown sticky substance. He panicked for a few seconds, not knowing what it was and he heard voices speaking wishing him a happy birthday in Arabic language followed by the giggling of some children. He swiped his hand across his face and stared at what appeared to be pink silly string in his hand. He looked at the two boys holding the cans. His nephews, Zayn and Kenny. A small arabic woman entered the house and kissed his cheeks. “Surprise,” she said. “Happy Birthday, Sadiq.”. He didn’t even have a chance to ask what his family, who lived in Pueblo was doing on his front steps before they started to enter the house. He saw his father, his younger sister and the two boys. His mother explained in her language that his older brother was at the campsite.

“Campsite?” he repeated. “Mom, what’s going on?” he questioned. “We came to surprise you on your birthday.” she explained. “It’s been too long. Look at you, handsome boy.” she pinched his cheek. She had not even noticed the woman sitting on the couch yet, but unfortunately one of the children did. “Who are you?” Kenny asked pointing to Asher. Sunny felt the need to speak. “Uh...everyone, this is Asher. My girlfriend.” he heard the sound of the puppy barking at the back door. “And that’s my new dog.” His parents looked at him with wide eyes and then his mother shook her head. “Why is this the first time I am hearing you have a girlfriend? And a dog?” she smacked his arm and started complaining in her language about how he never told them anything and was so private. He just sighed, shaking his head and not wanting to be in this situation right now.

“Mmm well I’ll have to think on that.” She smiled at him and looked down at the puppy before laughing softly. “We will. I hope you like it.” Asher watched as he unwrapped the gift and smirked happily as his eyes lit up and he saw what she got him. “I wasn’t really looking for anything and saw it and knew I had to get it to you. It has your favorite song on it and I figured you’d like it.” She shrugged and watched him. “It’s nothing, really. You deserve it. And again, it’s your birthday.” The blonde smiled and wrapped her arms around him too. She was glad he seemed to enjoy it and that she did good by this. 

Another laugh escaped her lips as the dog squeaked his toy and nodded. “They usually are. It’s why I stuck with more stuffed animals. Though, we’ll be cleaning up fluff for days.” She scrunched her nose up. “That’s such a weird name for a dog. Chazz is cute. Could really go deep into this Metallica thing and call him Lars.” She smiled as he admired the gift again. “Well, do you want it displayed down here where people can see it? Or up in your room?” She asked curiously before leaning into him and kissing him deeply. “So are you. You’re truly amazing.” She released a sigh and nodded. “I approve of that.” She kissed him again. “You can thank me however you want, birthday boy.”

“Yeah, thanks for that.” he said with a small sigh. He knew that no matter what the dog was going to make a mess in his house somehow because he was just a baby. “That’s why you need to be here to keep him occupied. Besides, it would give me an excuse to see you more.” he smiled softly and pressed a kiss to her lips. He looked around at his empty walls. “Probably down here. I mean it’s so cool, people need to see it.But we’ll worry about that later,” he turned his attention back to her. He let out a chuckle. “Yeah, Lars would be a cool name.” he smirked, looking at the dog while he played with his toy contently on the floor. 

 “He has the same destructive energy of rock star.” He smiled at her comment and continued kissing her lips as his finger tips grazed her thigh. The sound of the puppy whining made him stop and exhale a sigh. “I’ll be back. Don’t go anywhere” he added giving her leg a gentle squeeze. He stood to to to the door. “Get out and do your thing.” he ordered. “At least he told me he needed to go this time.” he added after the dog went out the door. He would probably be happy out there for a while, exploring all the new smells. Sunny returned to the couch. “Where were we?” he smirked before brushing her hair back to kiss her once more. He then lifted her onto his lap. “This is turning out to be the best birthday I’ve had in a few years.” his hand reached up to touch her cheek and he smiled.

“I understand, but if you need help, I’m more than happy to come over and help out. Let him out and spend time with him. If you don’t mind me around here when you’re gone. Or being here when you get home.” She would happily help with the puppy, but she wasn’t going to overstep here either. “Maybe. Jealous?” She teased before nodding at his words. She was glad that he seemed to agree that she could come over and help out. “Yeah. I’d be more than happy to do that. And how exactly would you make it worth my while?” She teased before kissing him back and letting out a giggle as the puppy squirmed. 

Once the dog was out of her arms, she shook her head as she grabbed the bags. “He definitely didn’t.” She said as she moved over to the couch and sat down. “I know, but I had to. I saw it and it screamed you.” She smiled as she grabbed the wrapped box that held his present. “Plus, it’s your birthday. You get gifts on your birthday. It’s a rule.” She smiled and grabbed the cake before bringing it into the kitchen so the puppy wouldn’t be able to get it. She came back and sat down again. “Then he’s going to be more spoiled. There’s toys and treats in the rest other bag.” She told him and put that bag on the coffee table. “But here. Please, open your gift. I’m too excited.” Asher smirked and gave him the present.

“

A smile played on his features. “Whatever form of payment you’re willing to barter.” he said before the puppy interrupted He waited as she put the cake away. He wasn’t expecting she got him anything else. “That looks delicious. We can have some later.” he said.  He looked at her with a suspicious smirk when she said she had a present for him. He opened the wrapping paper like she said, his eyes lighting up. “Oh my God, Asher. This is....wow,  how did you get this? This is amazing!”  he stared at the framed Metallica album, signed by three members of the band. “God, this must have cost so much. You really didn’t have to get something like this. But I love it.” he set it down to wrap his arms around her. “Thank you.” he let her go.

The dog was staring at them and grabbed one of his squeaky toys in his mouth. Sunny cringed at the sound of him gnawing it. “Buying that one was a mistake.” he stated. “His previous owner called him Charles, which is a weird name for a dog. I think he looks more like a Chazz.” he said. He turned his attention back to the frame to admire it, with a grin. “Wow. I can’t believe you got me this. I’m gonna find a spot to put it on my wall. Which could be anywhere.” he said as he didn’t own any wall art or anything. “You’re amazing.” he stated taking her face gently between his hands and kissing her lips. He deepend the kiss and moved his hand slowly up her thigh. “I feel like I need to give you a proper ‘thank you’ some how,” he laughed softly.

“Oh no worries, I understand,” James said at Sunny’s explanation. Only the most macabre and probably the most sadistic would revel in real-life gory injuries. “I think that’s the appeal though, right? A man screaming while blood spurts out of his severed arm is supposed to be entertaining, right?” James never really understood the attraction to bloody horror films even before he joined the military but even much more so now. Having seen the things he’s seen…

James lit up at Sunny’s offer as his lips curled into a satisfied smile. “Funny you should say that,” he began. “I would love it if someone showed me around town. And I’m definitely down for some hiking!”

“

Sunny chuckled and gave a shrug. “I guess so. What gets me is the ones that survive the rest of the movie with just a sock tied around a bloody stump and end up stabbing the killer in the end. I mean if the blood loss didn’t kill them, infection would a few days later. Everyone knows you have to cauterize the wound at least. That’s probably why historically accurate movies are better. Most of them at least try to stay in the realm of realistic.” Sunny would prefer to watch dumb comedies or documentaries over gore any day. 

He sipped his drink and nodded. “Sure! I’m into mountain biking as well, if that interests you but hiking is fun and there are a lot of trails that aren’t too crazy. You gotta see at least one of them before it gets too cold. Although there are a lot of ski hills around here too, being Colorado and all. Even been up in the Rockies?” he asked, as it was one of the main reasons most people came to Colorado in the first place.

“I think the few episodes I’ve seen were when I was visiting my  family. One of my sisters-in-law is obsessed with it. Can’t say that I was particularly intrigued by the drama. If all of us ended up with all that drama I’m sure we’d all resign for our sakes.” When Talia started mentioning all the dramatic events during one of her attempts at getting Alicia to watch it, she could do nothing but be more discouraged to watch. “Well, listen, I can’t blame her. The only thing that makes the forced viewings bearable are those hunky physicians,” she told Sunny with a chuckle. If everyone was as good-looking at the hospital, then .coming to work would have definitely be a pleasure. 

“Yeah.  It could have been worse, but it wasn’t a breeze either. I’m glad the morning sickness is a thing of the past now, but the sciatica pain? It’s absolutely terrible.” Some days it was that keeping her up at night. And on the days the pain was more tolerable, the little one seemed to enjoy kicking her mama all night just for the sake of it. “You’d be surprised about how many opinions people have even if they have no right for them. As long as the baby comes out and is fine, then no one should care how it happened. It’s still a delivery at the end of the day,” Alicia figured, knowing that she would be happy with anything as long as it was in the girl’s best interest. “I’ll miss it too, but I’ll be back before you know it,” she promised before nodding. “Yeah, it’s a she. I feel like she’d barely touch half of her toys.” Alicia admitted with a soft chuckle, knowing that it was probably the cheap everyday stuff that would attract her. “No names yet. We’re still trying to find the one.”

“

Sunny cringed whens he mentioned the sciatica pain. “Yikes. That’s  painful without throwing a pregnancy into the mix.” he said. He wasn’t speaking from experience but he was knowledgeable as he had treated people even for injuries he could consider non-urgent. “Make sure you apply ice, and then heat. It’ll help.” he reminded her. He nodded at her statement. “Yeah. Well I’m glad to hear it’s healthy so far. “ He knew that with the technology they had now could detect most abnormalities, as opposed to years ago.  “Noted. Maybe I’ll go for clothes as a gift then. Lord knows, they grow out of them fast enough. I can’t buy clothes fast enough for my nieces and nephews and I’m sure most of them end up in good will.”

 A coy smile pulled at his lips. “Well, you know, ‘Sunny’ is a gender neutral name and I need someone to carry on the legacy, since I’m not doing the kids thing any time soon.” he laughed lightly. “Nah, I’m teasing. I’m sure you guys will think of something. Sometimes you need to meet the kid first to get an idea of what kind of name that suites them. And some people pick names that don’t suite them at all. Like Sadiq,” he muttered as he had always disliked his Arabic name.

It was funny how she could feel so much for Sunny in the weeks since they started seeing each other, but there was no one else who made her feel the way he had. He listened to her and didn’t make  her feel any guilt or shame. He made her feel the happiness she had been yearning to find and she was becoming less scared that she was using him as another drug. It was feeling more and more real and she was excited to have him. And being who she was, once she found out about his birthday, she planned to get him something despite promising him she wouldn’t. Then she found out about the dog and how could she resist getting some things for the dog as well. She arrived to his place after he had texted her in about twenty minutes and knocked n the door.

“I know, but it feels strange to do so.” She laughed softly and kissed him back. At the barking, she looked down and saw the puppy. “Oh! But how can you not get attached!” She said and dropped the bags in her hands except for one with a cake she had made for him, that she handed him. She knelt down and picked up the puppy. “Hi, baby. Aren’t you the cutest thing?” She laughed as the puppy started kissing her face. “You may have competition here.” She teased. “I got some toys for him and a present for you.” She grinned. “And that’s a cake. You can’t have a birthday without cake.”

“

“Well, I was hoping that I could find a more suitable home for him eventually. It’s just that I work so much, it’s not fair to him.” he said watching her pick up the puppy. He seemed to take a liking to her but he also loved attention from anyone he met. He gave a scoff. “Oh really? You’re going to ditch me for a dog?” he teased poking her cheek. “My neighbor’s kid has been taking care of him while I’m at work, but she’ll be going back to school in September. Maybe you can take her place.” he suggested with a shrug. “You’d just have to come by and play with him for a bit, let him outside so he doesn’t make a mess on my floors. Although if he stays I’ll probably install a dog door. I guess I would just needs someone to keep him company. What do you think? I could make it worth your while.” he smirked before pressing his lips to hers firmly. He felt the puppy in her arms jump up to start licking his chin and a groan escaped him. 

He took the dog and put him on the floor. “Way to ruin the moment.” he muttered. He took Asher’s hand to lead her to the couch with her bags. He smiled at her when she said she got him something. “Aw, babe. I told you I didn’t want anything. I just want to spend the day with you, that’s plenty enough.” he leaned closer to kiss her lips once more. “But cake is always appreciated.” he smiled looking at  the top of the cake. The puppy ran to smell it and he pushed him away with his foot. “You definitely didn’t have to get him anything. He’s already so spoiled.”

Normally Sunny did very little to celebrate his birthday. Getting older wasn’t anything worth celebrating in his mind. However, the past four years he had been away from his family and single. He didn’t exactly have anyone to be with even if he wanted to, until now. He had only briefly mentioned it to his girfriend and since they had only been dating for a few weeks he insisted that she didn’t buy him any gifts. However, they weren’t going to be alone. It had been about a week since Sunny became responsible for a 4 month old puppy. It happened unexpectedly, and he pondered at first if he would just keep him temporarily until he found a better home. His life wasn’t suited for pets. He offered one of his neighbor’s thirteen year old daughter $50 a week to let him out of the house while he was at work to do his business and get some exercise which she readily accepted. He had sent pictures of him to Asher and promised she could meet him when he had a day off. It was apparent however, that the animal was very attached to Sunny. Despite buying him his own bed, he insisted on sleeping next to him and following him around the house. 

Sunny had come home from work to let the dog outside and then shower and change his clothes, texting Asher afterwards to invite her over when she was free. The puppy brought him a toy Sunny bought him wanting to play ‘tug of war’. He sighed. “Don’t you ever get tired? Where do you get all this energy?” he asked. There was a knock and he went to open the door and greet Asher. “I keep telling you, you don’t have to knock.” His arms wrapped around her waist and he kissed her lips. They were interupted by the puppy barking as he ran to Asher and began sniffing her shoes. “This is....uh, well he doesn’t have a name. If you name them, you get attached.” he explained.

Derek followed Sunny toward the courts, no wait to be seen as they approached any empty one. It seemed like they had lucked out, the echoing of ricocheting balls sounding further down the hall. “I’d have to think they are,” he laughed, nodding his head in agreement. In hall honesty, Derek hadn’t a clue what the rules are and he wasn’t sure that he ever wanted to officially know. The man was happy playin as he did now. “It does go by way too fast,” he nodded his head, though Derek would be a lying man if he didn’t admit that he was looking forward to the snowfall once more. “Of course I can hack it,” he laughed, nodding his head. Retired from the professional snowboarding world, Derek was looking forward to having another slope in Providence Peak to get his heart racing, his blood pumping. “I’ve got your back, I’d bring you out if you broke a leg,” he laughed again, nodding his head.

Sunny grabbed a hard blue rubber ball from the storage room and bounced it against the floor, catching it in his hand. “It always seems to. I swear, every year goes by faster.” he shook his head. “Maybe it just starts to feel that way when you get old.” a half smile crossed his face. He knew he wasn’t that old in actuality but he definitely felt that way some days. “Did you at least get up to anything exciting this summer?” he asked the other. He found it interesting when he heard others leave Providence Peak for vacation because many people who enjoyed camping and hiking considered the town to be a vacation spot. He bounced the ball once more, winding back his arm. “Here it comes,” he made contact hard enough for it to bounce against the wall onto Derek’s side of the court. “Yeah, I’m looking forward to the new slopes. You’re probably going to put me to shame, though. I only learned to snowboard maybe...three years ago?” he chuckled. He wasn’t very good when he started out but he discovered he had good balance and was decent at the sport after some practice. “I grew up in Souther Colorado, so we didn’t get as much snow.”

She smiled at him. “If I could, I would. I don’t have that power, though.” She looked into his eyes. “And you think I’m the one for the job? I think I am the trouble.” She shifted a little in his arms and nodded. “Good. And I’ll wear whatever you want in return. Maybe a speedo myself.” Asher teased and kept playing with his shirt while they laid there together and talked. There was part of her, though, that wished that she had refrained form asking the kid question in the first place. It was just one that came to mind and now they were going to get into how she couldn’t have kids. She tensed again as he said he thought she’d be a good mom. She thought so too, but apparently it wasn’t meant to be with how many times she lost the chance.

“I was pregnant ten years ago.” She started and shrugged. “I was eighteen weeks with a little boy. Landon.” She felt the tears build up in her eyes as she thought about all this. She hadn’t talked about her miscarriage with anyone. She hadn’t gotten that far in her therapy and it was something she had kept hidden for so long that many people didn’t even know this happened to her. “It was when I was in Vegas. Right after Travis and I got married. We were excited. And then I woke up one night with… the most horrible cramps.” She moved and sat up as a tear ran down her cheek. “I miscarried and with how it was and being diagnosed with the same pregnancy issues my mom had, they did a… hysterectomy.” She explained and shrugged. “So no matter what, I can’t have kids. Not of my own.” She turned from him and looked down at the floor and tried controlling her tears. “Sorry. I keep… I keep doing this.”

A grin pulled at his lips. “Do they make speedos for girls? I think they’re just called bathing suits.” he chuckled softly. “There are nude beaches in France. Just to throw that one out there.” he added giving a wink. When she told him why she couldn’t have children, he felt a lump in his throat and he wished he hadn’t asked because it was obviously difficult for her to talk about. He wanted to express his sympathy to her but he knew from his own experience that those words were meaningless at times, even if people had good intentions. “God Ash, I’m..” he exhaled unable to find the words and shook his head whens he apologized. “No. I shouldn’t have asked. We don’t have to talk about it anymore.” he wrapped his arms around her tightly and kissed her head. “It’s not your fault. And it doesn’t bother me if we can’t..” he caught himself letting her go to meet her eye. “I mean, if you can’t. Not..us.” he let out a small chuckle and touched his forehead. “I don’t know what I mean.” he admitted but he definitely thought that was conversation they should have much later. 

He shifted down on the couch to get comfortable. Despite all the caffeine in his system he was starting to crash, as he often did after work. It usually went that way, if not the opposite. He couldn’t sleep and basically tossed and turned until it was time to go to work again. Those nights were the worst. He tried to focus on the movie they were watching, resting his head on top of hers. “You feel nice.” he commented with a small sleepy smile as his hand rubbed her arm. His eyes closed after a few minutes of fighting to keep them open. When he woke again, he saw the credits rolling on the screen. He didn’t know if Asher had fallen asleep but he felt the weight of her body which had put one of his arms to sleep. He carefully pulled it out from under her not wanting to wake her and felt her move. “Hey, sleepy head.” he smirked and kissed her cheek. “We should go upstairs or you’ll wake up with a sore neck. Trust me, I’ve done it many times.” he said and yawned.

“Well, I’m not everyone. I’m me.” She grinned at him. “And I don’t like it.” She laughed softly and looked into his eyes. She really wasn’t picky about music, but she tended to stay away as much as she could from rap and country. It just wasn’t what she was personally into. And she heard parts of the song, but didn’t go out to listen to the whole thing. Nor did she want to. “Yeah? Only probably, huh? Is there anything I can do that will make it more fun?” She asked him and looked into his eyes happily. She loved the comfort he gave her. She didn’t feel the guilt and shame like she did when she was around other people.

A giggle came from her as she kissed him back and nodded. “Okay. Then I am definitely asking to see you in a tiny speedo.” She teased him. Asher knew she went kinda serious with her question and shrugged. “Sorry. I just… want to know.” She tensed a little bit in his arms and hoped she hadn’t crossed a boundary here. She listened to him and nodded slowly at his words. “I… I don’t know.” She said honestly. She did before, but she wasn’t sure if she did now. “I can’t… I can’t have any of my own. And after Prue…” Asher’s heart pinged a little and she shrugged. “I don’t know if I can go through that again. I always wanted to be a mom, and now I have no idea.”

He shrugged when she asked him about going to Europe. “You could give me a raise, so I can afford to go.” he said with a smile. Sunny earned a decent wage, but something like that he would have to save up for. “I think it would be more fun to go with you than by myself, for sure. Someone needs to make sure I stay out of trouble.” he added. He let out a chuckle. “Maybe later. I’ll wear one just for you.” he added. 

He knew the conversation had turned serious, but if he was being honest, he knew that if they were going to become more serious in their relationship, they needed to know these things. He touched her hand, rubbing the skin when she mentioned not being able have children. “Oh. I’m sorry,” he said. He met her eye and smiled softly. “You’d be a good mom, I think.” he said. “Um. Can I ask, why you can’t..?” he trailed off knowing it was probably a sore subject and he didn’t want for things to turn sad again, but he wanted to know.

She scrunched up her nose and nudged his leg with hers. “God, no. I’d rather go deaf than listen to that.” She laughed softly. Country was far from her favorite music and she’d listen to just about anything before that. “I wouldn’t know. I avoided listening to the whole song. I’m pretty skilled at not listening to all that.” She laughed softly. “Yeah. I did my residency up there. Filed for divorce up there.” She explained to him. “It was nice for a while, but I came back here to be with my sister.” Wasn’t that funny? How she came back home to help her sister but her sister didn’t extend any help when she was going through it? 

“That would be fun. I think everyone has that idea.” She smiled at him. “What if you did it with me? Do you think you’d have a good time then?” She asked curiously before nodding. “Greece seems like a great place. Us on the beach.” She teased him a little bit. She thought about his question and took a deep breath. “I don’t know. I’ve lived in Vegas and New York. They were fine, but each time I came back here. Maybe this is where I’m supposed to be.” Asher said honestly. “I really have no idea.” She looked into his eyes and decided to get a little more personal. “Do you… want kids?”

He rolled his eyes at her response. “I don’t believe you. Everyone loves that song.” Sunny avoided listening to the radio because it seemed like the only played top ten music, and the same songs on repeat all day. Sunny preferred to listen to what was now considered ‘classics’, but music that was big when he was growing up. However, some of the more current songs were annoyingly catchy and would get stuck in his head. “Yeah, probably.” he responded to her question about traveling across Europe with her. He knew it was something most people did in their early 20′s before they committed themselves to adult responsibilities and had the freedom to enjoy the whole ‘sex drugs and rock and roll’ aspect of it. However, maybe being more mature meant that they would be able to appreciate it more. 

He smirked. “I think you just want to see me in a tiny speedo. You could just ask, if that’s the case.” he teased and pressed  kiss to her lips. His listened as she talked about her previous marriage. He had a lot of questions about that, but he got the feeling that it wasn’t the right time to ask. Right now he was just enjoying getting to know her quirks. Her next question took him by surprised and it was one he considered not answering. A small nervous laugh escaped him. “Can’t you go back to asking me easy questions? I feel like I’m being interrogated here.” he said, although he admired her boldness. He was worried his answer would be a deal breaker for her, as it was for many women. “Um....Not really, to be honest.” he said. “Well..I guess a part of me does, but I just don’t see how that would fit into my life, you know?” he shrugged and looked at her. Their first night together that was something that worried him before they became intimate and he remembered her saying she couldn’t get pregnant. He didn’t know what she meant by that but like her marriage, he considered it something she would probably tell him about when she was ready. “Why? Do you?”  he asked.
