I don’t understand your point. Yes, in Europe MAGA hats are just that - hats. I think you have a very limited view if you can see Make Science Great Again as mockery but not Make Spain Great Again as mockery, especially after a Spanish WC win in America. He said loud and clear - it wasn’t a political statement. What are you expecting him to do? Wear a FUCK DONALD TRUMP t-shirt? Surely American politics do affect Europe but they’re not fundamental as we have our own politicians who govern each country and I can assure you that most, even if right-wing mock Trump too. Why would he want to support Trump on Spanish soil? And why would he show support to Trump by wearing a Make Spain Great Again hat when he could’ve just worn a Make America Great Again hat and there would be no speculation on his stance? I’m not Ferran so I don’t know his political stance but you’re not Ferran either so you don’t know the context in which he wore the hat. It feels like no matter how much someone would try to prove to you that the slogan can be turned into a mockery because the politics and politicians associated with it are not EUROPEAN and do not govern ANYTHING in Europe, you just won’t get it. His take on MAGA and most Europeans take on MAGA is different than that of Americans because it doesn’t DIRECTLY affect them. Sure, it affects some things and sure, it inevitably trickles down to our politics because of America’s position in the world but there are other people as heads of European countries so Trump is not a DIRECT governing person in any country in Europe. Please, do you understand the concept of autonomy? Cause each and every European country has that!

All this for a rich white athlete is crazy. Do you understand implications? Make Science Great Again is a clear mockery of Trump as he is clearly anti-science. Make Spain Great Again can be seen as a mockery, sure, but you have to make that clear. With Ferran’s silence, his following, his past actions, and his response now, which saying it’s not a political statement doesn’t clarify who you support, it’s not made clear.

And I hate to break it to you…but the right wing politicians you know aren’t the only ones in Europe. There’s many who very clearly support Trump and very clearly support his same ideals. Vox, the Spanish right wing party for instance, supports Trump and his ideals. It’s an easy internet search.

The slogan can be turned into mockery. But not because the policies associated with it aren’t European. And not because European countries are governed without those ideals. While many Europeans may think differently about it, they should also have the capacity to understand what it’s promoting. And I think many do.

I would also try to get a better understanding of politics and how people can be great influences on a country. Genuinely.

Sure as Europeans we know who Trump is, what his politics are but still the American MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN thing has nothing to do with us and in Europe it’s not a symbol of Trump’s politics but a silly thing that you can change however as you’re poking fun at the idea that Americans are great and the American dream that has been sold to us since birth. The Spanish Prime Minister is a clear sign of mocking if you read between the lines. If you understand the implication. Wearing a hat that says Make Spain Great Again may seem like a joke, but you’d have to make sure that message comes across and not stay silent while Trump and Vox support you.

Trump may not be a politician in Spain or Europe, but he is unfortunately quite influential with right wing politics. Saying that Ferran can’t really support Trump because he’s Spanish is crazy, because he can. Many people all around the world do and if you went online you could easily find it.

Thank you for your perspective anon!! As an American, my understanding of European politics isn’t that great, but I would assume some of the right wing ideals and values overlap.

This is why I think his “I’m not involved in politics” and his not understanding is an absolute bs excuse. It’s ridiculous for him not to be at least aware of the meaning and the implications of being associated with Trump

Oh sure he did try to clear things up. In my opinion though…I still think it’s easy to say oh no I don’t support him rather than acting like he’s not involved in politics whatsoever.

I just think the issue is easily understandable and if he follows members of the right wing space, then it’s just a bad PR answer/lie.

We also do have to acknowledge the reason he’s doing these interviews and promotions. Under Armor. He’s in the US with them and they probably don’t want to be associated with that right wing/MAGA perspective.

to be honest, from a european perspective, trump is completely irrelevant in our lives. we hear about him because he is an idiot, and someone to be mocked, not because we see him as political figure to be admired. i wouldn’t blink an eye if i saw ferrans hat in public, because that’s just what europeans do, laugh at trump. i can definitely see why you would be confused, or possibly even upset, but europeans have their own political problems, and we definitely do not care for donald trump.

It doesn’t matter if you care for Trump or not. I respect your opinions and agree with a huge chunk of it but I still think you are still looking at it from an American perspective that is not applicable to European culture, and I’m saying it as an European. Trump’s support of Ferran means something entirely different to you than it does to Europeans because his politics and his actions don’t apply to us. We say „oh, that’s terrible, he’s so stupid” and than we just laugh about what he’s saying and the fact that most Americans voted for him and now you’re stuck with an idiot in office. Most of his comments are mocked and seen as crazy ramblings of a deranged man, and I’m saying it from experience as I’ve spoken about it with friends from many different countries in Europe. His flattery towards Ferran is going to be overlooked or forgotten as quickly as Kane golfing with him because he isn’t a significant figure in Europe (lucky us!). The hat was a stupid idea but I have friends who have said make …. great again about the craziest things or worn clothes with it on and it was never seen as support but as a mockery of the fact that some Americans really do believe that America was ever great. I don’t think you will find a young person who actively hangs out with other young people like Ferran who takes that term seriously. Wearing political symbols or statements is just not something that people generally do.

The outrage regarding his antics is also not widespread. It’s mostly a social media thing. Most people are more curious if he’s dating anyone and going crazy about him looking hot and being affectionate with Llorente. I think a statement would be great but I don’t think it’s that much of an issue to the point where people would genuinely want to throw hands at him. I’ve seen more comments about him being gay with Llorente than him being right-wing which is something that mostly girls with Barca players as their pfp focus on. His teammates also don’t seem to mind him much which I can imagine they would if he was an anti immigration, racist right-winger. I’m not trying to defend him cause he is being irresponsible right now but I genuinely believe that a huge chunk of this controversy stems from the fact that he’s always been disliked and most Barca fans hate him so people easily jumped on the occasion to really blow it out of proportion and make him world’s worst person to justify their disdain.

I completely get what you’re saying and I can see how Americans are taking this a bit more intense or harshly than others? I also didn’t know that this was just a social media thing as this is something I’ve been seeing a lot, but that could also be to my own little sphere of what I see and Trump commenting on it, which uh unfortunately does bring it out a bit more in America.

I will also like to add. I don’t want to come off as hating Ferran, even if I’m acting a bit harsh towards him. I’m just disappointed because this is a topic that does affect me and seeing someone I really do like and support, and supported for a while inadvertently prop up that message and not say anything is depressing.

I don’t hate him. I’m just over the situation completely. I want to keep liking him and keep supporting him, especially when it does seem like it’s a joke. It’s just hard the longer his silence goes on.

I didn’t just discover football guys. I’ve known about it since I was a kid. Don’t demean my perspective just because I’m an American who loves the sport.

Girl, you do realise that he has a team that most likely posts his work related things, right? and if he were to make a statement, it’d be drafted by his team and reviewed by multiple people and he would most likely be mostly absent from creating it. not to mention that he’s not American, he’s Spanish and can’t support trump because his politics don’t apply to him. and it’s trump himself who called him out, he didn’t share his support or shoutout Donald trump, all he did was wear a hat that in Europe is a symbol of mockery towards Donald trump and his politics. I can’t believe that such outrage wasn’t present when Harry Kane consciously and on his own accord went golfing with him. it would be great to get a statement from Ferran but him being a professional athlete strips him of the ability to just jump on social media and blasting Donald trump. You have a very American approach to an European athelete playing a predominately European sport in Europe. Most companies, teams, players and coaches shy away from making any public statements regarding politics.

No I completely understand and agree with the team thing. I’m a PR major so I quite literally learn about this. But if he truly cared about all this backlash that he’s getting it’s so incredibly easy for him to post about it. That’s what’s so ultimately disappointing on my end.

Secondly…supporting Trump doesn’t depend on where you’re from? It’s quite easy to support Trump from different countries as we’ve seen before by many international athletes. Harry Kane saying he played golf with Trump is an example of that, which I was upset by, but I also don’t truly care for Harry Kane. I wouldn’t be surprised if someone like him supported Trump.

It doesn’t matter if policies apply or not. And believing in the right wing policies Trump supports and perpetuates is just the same as liking Trump.

You’re right that he himself didn’t explicitly say “I support Trump” and I even said in some earlier posts that I thought it was a mockery. But for the backlash to get this intense…his implicit silence is speaking volumes.

And saying that most teams and players shy away from political statements is valid. Not going to argue with that cause it’s what we’ve seen before. However, when you have teammates who openly speak their mind and a player who has spoken his mind about things before? It’s the silence that’s really important to note here.
