Sorry for the negativity, but ever since i came across a fic tagged with that "shane hollander im so sorry that woman is your author" tag months ago I haven't checked ao3 at all, just your fics and some of the other pre-show authors from time to time and that's it. I don't know how to explain it, but knowing that a huge chunk of fics are probably written by people who hate the books that I loved so much (including the characterization of shane and Ilya, which is the one I fell in love with) has killed my desire to read those fics. People can write whatever they want, don't get me wrong, but idk. Just a weird feeling. I'm just grateful that there are people in the fandom who may not agree with everything in the books but still act more normal about it instead of tearing Rachel and her books apart.

It's insulting to see people gushing and obsessing over Shane and Ilya, while in the same breath talking shit about Rachel. When people say stuff like that tag (and I've seen much worse than that on here and twitter), I feel like my intelligence is being insulted because I love the books.

But I loved Shane and Ilya before I knew there was going to be a show, and I started writing fics from my love of the characters as Rachel wrote them and nothing else. I'm as wary as you are about reading new fics from people who either haven't read the books or HAVE read them and hate them. It's like some people feel like the know the characters better than she does, which is ridiculous, because she INVENTED them.

I also hate feeling like I have to defend Rachel when there are legitimate critiques of her books, (several of which she has acknowledged and talked about!), but I'll dig my heels in, because she doesn't deserve that level of derision.

I'm honored that my fics are included in what you're reading! That means so much to me, because 99% of the time, I'm defaulting to book canon, and I sometimes fear that'll make people not want to read my stuff.

And there are definitely some pre-show fans who love the books and who are still writing great stuff. Agree with all of this. There are great post-show writers of course as well, but the wave of Rachel hate has been insane :/

There are things in both books I dislike. Rachel has said things about Ilya and Shane that I disagree with. To act like she didn’t ultimately create the characters and world we love so much, though… come on, y’all. There is no Heated Rivalry, Shane Hollander or Ilya Rozanov without the beautiful mind of Rachel Reid.

I think one of the most dangerous things we can do is justify why we should treat marginalized people well. “Gay people aren’t just interested in sex” “people who use welfare often work multiple jobs” “some people are fat because of a health issue” I actually don’t care about any of these things. i do think ilya will need reading glasses when he’s older and i do think he’ll fight it like hell until shane walks in on him reading a recipe with his square wire framed glasses but before he can rush to take them off he realizes just how well he can see shane now. realizes how he can see the more faint freckles again that he hadn’t even noticed he’d been missing or the small wrinkles that have formed on the edges of his eyes. and then yeah he’d suck his dick about it.
