I honestly don't care that the game got delayed, that's pretty typical for most kickstarter projects. There's a big difference between estimating how long it will take vs actually doing it, and I get that. What bothers me is how they have basically nothing to show for all the time spent on this.
All they've got is an unfinished and unoptimized remake of the demo that doesn't even use that new game engine they've been hyping up since shortly after the kickstarter. Which I honestly don't understand the point of. Like it's a vn, I really don't think you need an entirely new game engine built from the ground up for that. Especially with how malleable something like renpy is. They could have just played around with the coding on that and gotten similar results. Idk it just seems like it's been a massive waste of time and resources for them that they probably are having a case of sunk cost fallacy with by this point.
They said that they're going to change how they do things from now on, but I think this is like the third time they've said that and nothing has ever changed. I don't think that they're scammers or anything, I feel like they want this game to happen, they were just extremely unprepared and have no idea what they're doing. The only way that they're ever going to make progress is by getting actual professionals involved, but I doubt that they can afford that or are willing to admit defeat to that level.
I feel bad for the stress and health problems that they're going through right now, but they're doing themselves no favors by being terrible at communicating and relying heavily on excuses to get away with a lack of updates with any real substance. They can't be shocked when people get sick of the updates being focused on their problems while rarely containing anything that could be considered real progress. I get why people feel scammed and are dubious of them by this point, even I'm questioning if every story has been particularly truthful.
I feel like this is all really fair. It's been a LOT.
Ok, just in case you respond to my message about Jambeebot deleting twitter. They came back but yeah, it's not looking good and honestly, i don't blame them for wanting a break or even leave this place.
Yah I did see it, I've been trying to get to stuff as it comes in.
Nah, with this all happening if their mental health took a dive; a break from socials probably would've been a wise choice to pick again so I'm surprised they came back so quickly. Idk.
Look I get you're upset but you don't seem to get that they've had issues with minors in the past. Every single person on their Patreon lately has said how uncomfortable they were because they've had minors sneak into the space and that they were grateful for the change.
You have a right to be upset about the delay but it feels like you're completely ignoring the reason behind the paywall
Idk is that why they posted the last one publicly?
Im just so. Upset. I'm frustrated. I've felt for a long time they've just been making other projects and I understand needing a break from the main project but multiple projects? Some that have been finished before what people WANTED what people funded y'know? It's ridiculous not saying the other games are bad but idk they should have been on the pipeline AFTER sdj was finished. I'm frustrated I'm angry I'm upset I feel like an idiot there's no accountability no nothing
Nah, I get where you're coming from. Like I said before, finish your plate before grabbing seconds kinda shit. SDJ was what drew the crowd, there's lots of love for the other projects, sure, but that a whole different game was thought of and made feels kinda eeehhhh.
And that's no shade to it, I didn't play it, I'm sure it's good and all but I think anyone can admit that so many irons in a fire increases the odds of getting burned. Or burnt out.
Like...if you want to build, if you want to be a reputable company or studio or dev or whathaveyou, there needs to be some sort of organization and reasonable goal setting/benchmarks/blah blah to get one done before going to the next rather than hopping from bit to bit and spreading so thin. It's an undertaking that needs to be handled as such.
I think that anon means that someone went onto the Patreon and began spreading info on there in a malicious way. The devs said something about how some people have been found to have been using the Patreon to spread misinformation, gossip and other harmful stuff. I think all this talk about it is giving them courage to do it again as they said it happened in the past
I don't know anything about that honestly. The most I've seen is either here or some stuff on Twitter and it all seems to be of the same stuff we're talking about here regarding information the studio put out itself.
It's unfortunate that rumors and misinformation are around, I don't know what they are and frankly- I don't want to know.
Just because something is an indie game doesn’t mean people can’t have their opinions and criticisms
People are allowed to criticise things
And I’m sorry if the people on the team are not doing good (wishing them the best) but it does NOT excuse every single questionable choices made by the studio
I agree. Look, criticisms can be hard to take. Nobody likes it. But it's necessary to grow. There's work involved with it and sure, it may not always be easy but being stagnant, fighting against it, ect does more harm than good.
This is probably harsh but I honestly suspect they're not being fully honest about the "Patreon staff" saying all content should be paywalled, 18+ or not. Because I can't recall literally anywhere else where this rule has been said, or that someone got punished for not paywalling a SFW announcement just because they're an 18+ creator. If not lying, then just something fishy about it.
I dunno. They apparently spoke to a rep who said that's how it's gotta be but the TOS didn't seem to match when I peeked at it. And now I guess there's rumbles that Snaccpop might paywall it all to make it an only adult space??? Which, fine I guess; if that's your goal that's the way to attempt to lock in. I get that. But idk through all of this it doesn't feel like a lot has been very clear.
But I stand by my opinion (that I know is shared by others) that the paywalled delay excuse still sucks.
"if you followed the creator on twitter you would've known this was coming"
Like??? The fuck lol I shouldn't and don't want to follow everyone involved for kernels of information on a project. Can't, won't, whatever. It's weird. Augh it's early.
We should stop talking about it all together. People have been going into the space to get info and being malicious with it
Am I being copypasta'd?
what is up with some people being so hostile rn
Are people being hostile? I've seen some people maybe snapping at each other but haven't received or seen hostility. That doesn't mean it isn't happening I suppose but that's unfortunate.
Then again I'm kind of spaced out from it all and just sticking around so others can voice their thoughts and opinions. But-
Don't be shitty, it's free.
A part of me wants to be understanding about it all it really does. Cause I get that game development can have setbacks that are out of a development team's control like the VA strike, personal life emergencies, someone leaving the team etc. And even if things go smoothly game development can still take years given that, for alot of indie devs, they need a source of income outside of that so focus can't be just on the game.
What gets me upset over the sdj situation is how often the same issues keep popping up and how they handle it. I'm all in favor of taking time to make a good product but jfc when's the last time we got an actual update on where they were on things? Even something as simple as "here's where we are on sprite work and how much of the script has been implemented" would be better than leaving us in the dark over and over and only giving us updates that boil down to "Sorry but things fell apart again". And they only seem to do that when they can't justify going any longer without some type of news.
In short I'm not upset at the setbacks themselves. It's the lack of transparency.
I totally agree, the lack of transparency is incredibly frustrating. It's a core fundamental imo.
I'd be more understanding of the setbacks if they weren't the same or similar set backs as they are every time. Or if there was ever discussion of how to bounce back or adapt or plan for it it happens going forward if that makes sense.
Setting realistic goals and expectations is important not just for a project but the people working on it. And if that isn't shaking out, it needs to be retooled in a way that's feasible. At least that's what I was taught and whatever
We should stop talking about it all together. People have been going into the space to get info and being malicious with it
I genuinely don't know what you mean, if you could be more specific I'd appreciate it.
Probably because we understand that for the longest time, snaccpop was an indie dev group. It's like being impatient with any other indie game.
Also I used to love your content but after this delay message, you've been nothing but negative and not understanding. The studio head was sick, another dev had mental health issues. Be patient. Their health is more important than a damn game
I'd like to be, truly, I would. Mental health, being sick, I get that even if it may seem like via my posts and responses that I'm not. You can have that opinion of me, that's your right.
I've said several times, it's that there's a lack of real responsibility and accountability that bothers me. That there's never a plan after delays or hiccups. The lack of organization and the same kind of updates feel (to me) outweigh what we really see of SDJ.
I know they're people, I hope they get what the need, get better. But doing the same thing over and over that lands them into a bad mental place or impacts their health should warrant a look that something has to change for their sake. Idk
It's a new thing, the paywall. All new content is probably gonna be behind it f9r security reasons.
Honest they might as well. I can agree with that, do an overhaul on their socials to clean and purge to put everything on the patreon.
I always wondered why so little people talked about this… were they scared of speaking up?
I really have no idea?? With you that I thought it was kind of odd I never saw anyone else poking and prodding asking bigger questions but maybe it was kind of that thing like...
Everyone else was going a long and just giving the same "oh it's okay!!" "I'll wait ten years if I have to!!" Kind of vibes, others just fell into line with it. It happens, people can be scared to rock boats and I get it.
Forgive me for jumping out of nowhere about this but i thought i'd mention it.
I always thought of making a video about the situation going on with Snaccpop Studios but the thing is 1. It's not easy for me to make a explanation because fuck, i suck at it and 2. My microphone is shitty if you get what i mean.
And 3. I worry i may end up starting drama and getting harassment...💧
Honestly, i thought someone someday would make a video about it, maybe letting people know how bad the situation in Snaccpop gets and criticizing them, not in a "they're horrible people" way (because how is calling someone horrible criticism?) if you get what i mean.
I was so excited for the game to come out but the moment i posted here about overthinking that something will go wrong, WELL WOULD YOU LOOK AT THAT, i jinxed it but yet, NOT SURPRISED..
If i were to work on something, i would have let the fans know that there's a possibility whether or not i will be able to continue the game, i can never promise to release it or anything and the way the team are handling the situation doesn't seem right like yes, you are all humans, i get that, i UNDERSTAND THAT but holy shit, maybe if you didn't jump to other projects, you would have finished the game immediately, Snaccpop??
Maybe hire people that can work on it instead of saying "we can handle it" because no, that is a big lie. Are you being serious knowing well how horrible your health conditions is? 🙃
YESH..
Sorry for the sudden message, i had to let it out.
Lol I said early on this is a place to go. You've got nothing to apologize for.
And you're not the only person I've seen talking. About Snaccpop/SDJ getting a video essay or something. Truthfully, I think it would be interesting. I understand what you mean in the valid criticisms, maybe then they would actually listen. Or I would like to hope that they would. It's hard to tell sometimes with the echo chamber that feels to be set up and from the posts I read on the patreon- doesn't seem like they'll be doing anything differently to positively impact progress.
Anon you have every right to feel the way you feel and voice them. I don't know what it was in this community that made people feel they always had to kinda coddle but, it's okay to be mad. It's okay to be upset. It's okay to be sad.
Same anon as before. They're basically covering their asses against Coppa which I get because even though it's sfw the game itself is NSFW in nature and the law doesn't really see shades of gray. It's black and white basically. They can face criminal charges if they don't have safety measures, such as paywalls
I guess then my disconnect or confusion is then why this couldn't be put on their socials. They post updates without it on Tumblr, Twitter... Like if keeping content strictly for adults; then shouldn't all of it be paywalled for security?
I understand protecting their asses and all but like...the way they're explaining things, the way they've talked about things, it all just doesn't add up to me, y'know?
