                    at some point that evening , the alternative , off-key , screamo metal-esque backdrop of monstrous , guttural roars , the rapid-fire of various assault rifles and bursts of bazookas , high-pitched zings of lazers and just a generous helping of good old yelling and screaming had died down to a comfortable ambiance of fire crackling and the appropriately accompanying chatter of happy campers . if the campfire was the charred remains of some sort of subaquatic eldritch stranded like a beached whale on the shore of new jersey , and the happy campers included one exhausted alien and     —- ….      whatever the black-tar tentacle-transforming gun-toting guy sprawled leisurely on top of it , using its barely-breathing form as a beach chair , was . some hours after the monster first stepped on land , and she still wasn’t entirely clear on that point . 

                       rubbing slowly around her eyes , feeling the ache of a frankly irresponsible use of lazers forming , like staring at a screen in a dark room for a month straight , she blearily peered up at him from her perch on the creature’s foot .
