- But why are you immigrating? Na Young's father is a film director, and you're an artist. Why would you leave all that behind? - When you leave something behind, you gain something, too.
There's a word in Korean: 인연 [in yun] — it means "providence" or "fate". If two strangers walk by each other in the street, and their clothes accidentally brush, that means there have been eight thousand layers of 인연 between them.
PAST LIVES (2023) dir. Celine Song
I don’t care if I like what you love, it doesn’t matter. I love what you love if I love you.
There’s something so holy about someone seeing the finer points of your personality and going “this, this is someone I can love.” Like, not the things you hate about yourself or the quirks and flaws in your personality that keep you up at night, because sure, we all have those romanticized notions that one day someone will love our mood swings or our sometimes shoddy communications skills. But, there’s something to be said for loving a human for all the pieces that seem inconsequential, but add up to who we really are. Like maybe your friend does a lot of puzzles, and you don’t, but when you see a puzzle you go “ah, that’s so Kelly.” I’ve had friends remember that I love blueberry coffee, and it doesn’t seem important, but when talking about what our happy places are, my friend said “I’d imagine yours is reading on a rainy day while drinking blueberry coffee” and it’s the details! It’s the things that when put together make me who I am. It’s the things that make you who you are. And someone loves that. And someone sees the smallest detail and remembers it automatically, they tie it to you and they love you. And then they love that thing too, even if they don’t like it. Loving something simply because someone you love loves it is so natural, it comes automatically. People may not always love the worst parts of you, but if they love you, then they’ll never see your favorite flower without thinking of you or they’ll start saying your favorite phrase without noticing and anyway, humans are great and made to love.
I think what they mean is, when you find somebody that you love, it feels like hope. “EPISODE 2.6” ➖ FLEABAG
