He’s surprised and excited by the smooch, and thinks he understands when she slips something into his pocket. He grins and kisses her before she pulls away.

A soft growl rumbles at the back of her throat, taking in the taste of his tongue, the bittersweet flavor of his last meal. When their lips parted, she was panting, and jerked open his belt along with the front of his pants. Her fingers hooked his beltloops as she turned away, tugging him along into the privacy of her tent.

“Take everything off and lie down…” she grunted, crouching beneath the low roof of tarp. She wanted to watch him, see how fast he could peel himself out of his filthy jeans and stained cotton.

She couldn’t control what Bubba or Toecutter did. But she could control him.

She barely has to pull with how closely he’s following her. Practically on her heels, and he tumbles down with a huff of laughter beside her inside the tent. Immediately he rucks off his shirt and she got his pants so he’s shoving them and his underwear down in the same motion. They catch on the knife sheath at his knee and his boots and he fumbles like he’s gonna die if he doesn’t do this as fast as possible. It feels like an eon to him, but it’s really just a moment before it’s all off and shoved to the side.

He grins up at her, naked save for the collar and his hands on his dick.

Her fingers move from his collar, down to the old belt around his hips, gripping and pulling him closer. More…It was less an issue of wanting, but of needing.

Bubba was gone. Off doing whatever it was that was so much more important than being with his family. Toecutter’s attention had focused itself on Zano, that crazy mad-dog idiot who was going to get himself, and maybe the rest of them, killed someday.

Clumsy and growling, he tries to catch that hand, and gets knocked in the face instead. It’s disorienting: it doesn’t hurt nothing really does but it crosses his eyes a moment. His kicking catches Max in the bandaged knee, but Max manages to get his gun.

He manages to get a good hold, and tries to strangle him.

When the kick contacted Max’s knee, he felt something crack or burst. He’d thought it had died off enough to go numb, but apparently it hadn’t. In a peculiarly clear moment of insight among the chaos, he realised that the blinding pain wasn’t a bad thing. Might not have to chop that leg off after all.

Compared to the knee, the death grip on his throat was barely registering. With the eerie clarity of dissociation making him feel almost - but not quite - separate from his body, he knew his hands were free and rammed the gun against Diabando’s belly.

The blast was muted by flesh when he fired.

He reaches to the buckle and tugs it loose with one hand. But he shoves the ratty collar into a pocket instead of trading it for the new one. He turns it in his hands, a dark leather band with a ring for tags and leash, and a buckle. And then he holds it out to her again with a soft smile.

“Ya wanna do the honors?”

He tips his head to give her space to work as she leans close to buckle the collar around his throat. Her words are a bare whisper and he’s acutely aware of the ghost of her breath across his face.

“Perfect.”

And then he leans forward to kiss her gently.

The kiss surprises her. It shouldn’t, but it does. Because it’s so soft, and tender. Not rough, like Toecutter’s, not passionate and eager like Bubba’s. And the gentleness, coming from a dog like Bando, takes her off guard.

Nails pulls in a breath, cheeks and ears red when their lips part ways, and clears her throat. “Good…”

She slips a couple fingers beneath the leather strap, testing to be sure it wasn’t too tight, pulling him just a little closer, to kiss him again. “Good.”

Nails snorts in the back of her sinus, but the grin is sincere as she takes the collar back and steps closer to slip the bit of leather around the back of his neck. He’d been good. As good as could be expected from him, really, and she liked that smile he wore. Almost gentle. Almost kind. 

And this would be so much easier with two hands. 

But she manages to pin one side down with her stump while guiding the strap through the buckle with her fingers, to slip the catch through a hole while her nose hovered near his.
