Growing up, I’d run home after school to watch reruns of Beverly Hills 90210. I was madly in love with Luke Perry’s Dylan McKay, just like everyone else. If there’s any man worthy of the title “heartthrob”, surely it was Luke Perry. I remember seeing girls on TV falling at his feet, screaming his name and crying in his presence. The hysteria around this man, the love so many people had for him, sometimes even made me feel a little bit scared for him. He was our generation’s James Dean, even if Luke didn’t necessarily want that comparison/title. The original bad boy with a heart. He made teenage girls swoon just at the mention of his name.

Many years ago, H&M had a Beverly Hills 90210 campaign and they started selling Luke Perry/Dylan McKay shirts. Oh, my young adult self promptly ran to the nearest H&M and bought a Luke shirt. A bit of nostalgia for the fictional character that had stolen my teenage heart. To now hear of his passing is heartbreaking. It has brought up a lot of memories. And to hear of all the kind words people have to say about Luke, makes me sadder to see him gone and happy that he was a good person too. I know you’ll have a hard time finding someone who did not grow up having a crush on this man. The profound impact he had on young people in the 90s and early 00s and on pop culture has not gone unnoticed. Luke Perry’s Dylan McKay was a true Icon. May he rest.

I think my favorite part of the Lord of the Rings film by Peter Jackson is at the beginning of the movie at Bilbo’s birthday party the sheer amount of joy and happiness Gandalf get’s by making fireworks.
