it was infuriatingly difficult trying to get someone as indifferent as sunghoon to notice you.
despite your efforts, it just wasn't enough.
meticulously brushing out every stray hair, adjusting your lipstick, picking out the best outfits that you thought would catch his eye;
a miniskirt that was outside your comfort zone. a low collared shirt that accentuated the soft peaks of your collarbones. blisters and winces you were willing to accept just so you could wear heels that you thought could've turned his head.
but he never turned.
he stayed stationary. faced downwards towards his desk. whether it be a client on the phone, a spreadsheet on his laptop, or a pile of reports he needed to approve, he was devotedly focused on the task in front of him.
as his secretary, you could commend him for his dedication, but as his admirer you could kill him for his indifference.
"mm. thank you" his only response anytime you entered his office and placed the reports for the week on the mahogany in front of him.
not once glancing for even a nanosecond at the changes in your uniform. his eyes remained solely on the screen in front of him.
a response so full of unresponsiveness.
like his work ethic, he too was flawless. black hair in flowy strands that laid softly over the rims of his silver glasses, sitting low on the soft bridge of his perfect nose.
even when a strand went astray or his glasses trailed lower on his nose, his chiselled jaw, pinkish-purple pursed lips and furrowed thick brows, tensed from focus, still managed to constellate his vampiric pale skin to paint a sexy enigmatic portrait.
never a crease on his ivory collared shirt, only ever skewed slightly to the left when he reached for the handphone on his desk, which exposed the perfect amount of skin. subtly highlighting the apple of his throat, before he would adjust his collar accordingly along with his tie.
you thanked god for that one time there was a heatwave, and the vents in the office were not a shield strong enough for sunghoon's stubbornness to adhere to his subconscious rules over his attire.
he had taken off his blazer, loosened his tie, unclasped the first two buttons of his collar, freeing the junctures between his shoulders and neck.
he rolled up his sleeves of his milky shirt, revealing more of his veiny trails that pathed up his arms.
you ogled as he took off his watch with haste, and brought his blue mapped hand to claw at the space between his collar and pulled it back and forth.
fanning and liberating himself from his own cage, letting the breeze reach the streaks of sweat on his neck and nape.
you wished you could've been that heat. the heat that would have provoked him enough to snap out of his unbreakable concentration. forced him to look at you. give you the attention you craved.
what was even more frustrating was that you were getting attention. from the other wolves in the building.
just not his.
you wanted to become that heat. but there was only one way. to ignite the fire with a match. a match branded jealousy.

you only saw sunghoon's adrenaline rise when another company, rising business, or even a meaningless investor that visited the office once were raising their numbers ever so slightly more than Park Finances.
especially when that praise was awarded in articles like Financial Daily, ones he would read every morning with his bitter coffee.
you recall a week before the heatwave when an investor from Yang and Co. entered the office to meet sunghoon.
you addressed riki with your polite tone and welcoming smile as you lead him to sunghoon's office. you traded aimless small talk about the weather and working in this business whilst he would smile softly with nods of acknowledgment.
a kind man, you thought at that moment. until you saw sunghoon's face.
tensed with an itching squint and lips morphed by suspicion and something else you couldn't name.
you swore you remember his tongue poking his cheek as his eyebrows furrowed, not with focus this time, but with something almost like anger. you couldn't believe it at the time.
you gripped the handle and slowly opened the door to sunghoon's office, a harsh squeak of the metal announced yours and riki's entrance.
sunghoon stood, all in the name of business, and shook his hand with a firm grip. after exchanging names and business, the meeting had commenced.
as secretary, all you had to do during the meeting was notetaking. typing 80 words per minute effortlessly on the core events of the meeting, highlighting the main discussions spoken between riki and sunghoon down to the specific minute it was uttered.
which was actually your favourite part of the job because you didn't have to perform. years of experience allowed you to sit in silence and let your fingertips go into autopilot on your laptop like mozart on a piano.
normally, this would take 30-35 minutes. 40 minutes, if sunghoon had a meeting prior and didn't have time to take a shot of espresso, his brain running slower than the words on the document.
but this specific meeting was excruciatingly long. not on your account. but on the man that gave subtle death glares through his lenses to the investor opposite him.
you hadn't noticed the stares as you were zoned out, trusting your ears and fingers to pick up when to jot down something important.
your eyes only glancing to your watch when you needed to copy the minute into your document and when you snapped out of focus, like a driver remembering they are operating a vehicle at 70mph on the highway, to look between them forcing a smile.
however, this meeting wasn't going as smoothly for sunghoon.
sunghoon's veins almost popped out of his knuckles watching this man glance at you every few seconds as the soft clicks of your laptop alerted your presence.
his frustration justified under the precedent of unprofessionalism, of course.
it was very unprofessional for this stupid man to be that distracted by his secretary.
it was unprofessional the way riki flickered to you as you checked your watch.
it was unprofessional that riki would reciprocate your smiles when you gazed off the screen out of politeness.
smiles that were only reserved for him, as your role of secretary, of course.
he had to stop this. immediately.
it started with small interruptions to get you out of the office for even a millisecond.
getting the folder entailing the projections for the year before, for "context" as sunghoon put it.
or getting a partnership agreement document from another office, which you definitely knew wasn't going to be used.
signing an agreement in the same meeting was too impulsive for sunghoon.
but you were not going to question it. even when sunghoon told you to reprint the drafted agenda because of an incorrect page number formatting, which you could've sworn you triple checked, but you did it anyway.
a few minutes were paused for each interruption, which was fine.
although, this meeting was getting too long. you were definitely over it after the 35 minute mark.
you looked up from your screen as he called your name, which snapped you out of your concentration.
"I think Mr Nishimura and I would like some coffee." he announced flatly, like that was a normal request after the fiascos he had put you through all meeting.
you were confused as to why sunghoon would ever elongate a meeting further, for coffee especially.
"sir… the meeting? we would have to pause until i return." you explained, because who the hell would transcribe while you were gone? or were they going to small talk?
the thought made you laugh, sunghoon was too introverted for that.
"have robert sub in" your confusion quickly shifted into annoyance mixed with shock as you pressed your lips together.
robert? really? the guy who napped on his spacebar once, his forehead managed to write 64 blank pages?
he was going to transcribe this investor's meeting? you blinked a few times hoping you were dreaming. you almost looked for an invisible camera like you were being pranked.
your lips parted with an empty response before shutting it quickly. you weren't about to argue with your boss in front of an investor.
you nodded with a smidge of apprehension, still flabbergasted by this whole ordeal. you believed the ground beneath you would crumble, signalling the end of the word.
you and sunghoon both know how you are the most competent at this job. so why on earth would he do this?
until you finally noticed it.
sunghoon's piercing glare at riki, as if he could turn him into stone. you didn't know if you illusioned a forehead wrinkle begging to emerge on his face.
as you left and robert entered, the stiffness in his eyebrows had smoothed, eyes softened as if he had exorcised the demon paralysing him with… whatever that was.
you never let yourself imagine it was jealousy, it was just protectiveness over his company, his assets… his secretary, right? but even so, you had never seen him that heated.
you decided if you wanted to bring that heat back, you had to bring it back even harder.
— ⋆˙⟡♡ —
a few days passed since the heatwave. your name was in the local paper celebrating you for your corporate excellence as the secretary of Park Finances.
it felt euphoric to hear your praises in the paper and entering the office with heartfelt congratulations from your co-workers and, of course, sunghoon.
for sunghoon, your achievement also put Park Finances in the limelight, which was good for his company because that meant that more companies would be requesting partnership deals.
for you, this was a perfect opportunity to finally make him snap.
inviting a friend you made through networking, jake from Lee Banking, who was going to help with your plan.
you meet him at the entrance as if you didn't know him, showing him around the office with a smile.
sunghoon immediately feels an uncomfortable itch in his eye.
leaving his office, he swiftly walks closer to where you and jake stood together and reaches a hand to this unknown man to shake.
"park sunghoon" he introduces himself with a firm grip "do i have a meeting today?" sunghoon asks with composure tinted with confusion, tilting his head towards you for an explanation.
"oh no, Mr. Park, Mr. Sim is here for me." you say with a coy smile feigning obliviousness.
"for you?" sunghoon raises his brows "i wasn't informed about this" he retorts with subtle irritation trying to remain respectful in front of this newcomer he really couldn't care less about.
"oh i sent you an email, sir" you clarify innocently, memorising his schedule full well to know he hasn't logged into his desktop yet to even check his emails.
as if that response explained why jake was here and why you were allowed to have this meeting, you cut him off before he could ask any questions.
"excuse me" you murmur with a nod "after you, Mr. Sim." you smile politely to jake as you opened the door to a free space marked as 'office 1009' for your "meeting" to commence.
sunghoon blinks with bewilderment through the window of glass in the translucent cold door as it closes behind the both of you.
you both settle into the chairs turned next to each other on the table, making sure it was in sunghoon's view.
sunghoon notices how long your hair cascades down your shoulders for the first time.
he watches how the front pieces of your bangs act like ribbons twisting around your soft cheeks, with how much you kept sliding your bangs behind your ear, reprimanding them for their chaos.
he eyes how your skirt rode up your thighs as you sat down next to him.
it was way too short to be considered work attire. when did you start wearing clothes like that to work? how did he not notice sooner?
his chest tightens more and more as he observes from afar, pretending he was checking the printer for ink storage, seeing you smile and laughing with whoever the hell 'Mr. Sim' was.
even the name sounded stupid. okay, he is being ridiculous.
he barks out robert's name and he immediately strides towards sunghoon "y-yes, sir?" he asks hesitantly.
"bring more printer paper" he demands, knowing it was office 1009 that acted as a storage space for the appliances in the office, hence hovering over the printer as if it was an injured animal.
"and" which pauses robert in his tracks "report back to me what is being discussed in that meeting"
"r-right away" robert squeaks out, relieved he wasn't in trouble for dirtying the microwave in the work kitchen.
although sunghoon needed to have a talk with him about that, his rage is currently tunnel-visioned by this ambiguous meeting with you and this random.
time ticked painfully long until robert found the printer paper and came back.
"what was the meeting about?" trying to sound casual but it comes across as anything but.
"something about whether she was enjoying her role here… and about a secretary salary or something"
sunghoon thinks he needs a defibrator for his pulse. his tongue begins to dry up as his adam's apple springs rapidly in his throat.
he nods agonisingly slow, poking his cheek with explicit anger "thank you." he forces out bitterly "get back to work."
he tightens his fingers forming into a fist, nails piercing into his own palm. his other hand placing the paper roughly into the printer drawer and shoving closed with a slam. he exhales through his nose and enters his office without another word.
you had glanced out the window noticing sunghoon glance a few times throughout your conversation with jake.
you talked casually about weekend plans and immediately switched back into the act as robert walked in apologetically.
you thought sunghoon would've barged in by now with questions but he mouthed something stiffly to robert and fixed the printer harshly.
he had very little patience with appliances in this place.
you watched as he turned to enter his office without looking into yours any longer.
your body sags with disappointment. you give up on trying. he was never going to notice you.
"thanks anyway, jake" you give him a weak smile as you both tuck your chairs in, readying to leave "sorry for wasting your time"
"no no it's fine, we should do something, just for fun, outside finance buildings though" he reassures you as you lead him to the exit. the tail end of the conversation heard by some nosy co-workers.
"yeah, that sounds nice" you let out a genuine smile this time, appreciating him for shielding you from the embarrassment conjured by this failed experiment.
you turn back to enter the office before bumping into a firm chest.
impact squeezing your eyes shut before stepping back and lifting your chin to the wall preventing you from forgetting this humiliation.
sunghoon.
— ⋆˙⟡♡ —
"we need to talk" sunghoon utters firmly. no room for argument as he lead you into his office.
but you glimpse at how his eyes scowl through his lenses as he presses his lips together. his wrath trying not to spill out like a shaken champagne bottle.
originally, those words would've illuminated your heart to develop a new pulse and made you skip to his office, where any closeness during your honeymoon dazed phase of your crush felt like hope.
now, this walk felt heavy, each step etched with heartache and embarrassment, you wish for this phase of letting go to move on quickly.
you wish you could melt into the rug, probably would served more purpose to the décor of the bland, navy ground beneath you.
but instead, you had to mask your disillusion to the guy causing it, who is also unfortunately still your boss, with empty words about this fake meeting.
he slams the door roughly and shuts the blinds with quickness.
you were in for it now. you knew you were going to get the condemnation of your life.
not only did you fail at getting him to notice you, you also failed at doing your job. to act like a secretary who respected their boss.
and you couldn't even do that.
you slump in your seat in front of his desk as he settles into his, biting your lip to not allow the dam to break as you stare into his stinging glare.
"so that Mr. Sim didn't seem like a new friend" he states coldly, resting an elbow on the arm of his chair bringing his thumb to rest on the stubble of his chin and his index pressing horizontally on his upper lip.
building a cage that bars his fury from snapping an insult at this useless man, waiting for an explanation.
you felt your vocal cords tightening "jake, and uh, he isn't technically a new friend. we met through that national corporate conference a few months ago" you explain with a shaky voice.
"mm." a long pause with a painfully unhurried nod, like he was processing every phoneme of your sentence, moving his hand away from his pursed lips to a random pen, observing it.
"didn't seem that friendly to me" he responds agitatedly still looking away, which felt worse than any punishment, as he idly taps his pen on the desk annoyed.
you didn't even want to exhaustedly read into every word anymore.
you don't say anything, afraid that if you did you would choke up on your words.
you hate the way he is punishing you. you can't look at him, moving to stare at the floor, hoping that your gaze would manifest a black hole swallowing you away from his disappointment.
your silence did not cope anything irrational that plagued sunghoon's thoughts.
"you think it's appropriate to surprise me with strangers in my office for your own personal meetings?" he tosses the pen in front of him on the desk, cutting the rhythmic taps, to look at you directly with widened eyes and parted lips of disbelief.
the sound halting commands you to return his stare, noticing the peaks of his sharp fangs peeping through.
"it wasn't personal. it was-" you try to defend yourself pathetically before sunghoon cut you off.
"a job offer. not personal. right. robert mentioned." you notice his adam's apple try to replenish the drought in his throat as he refutes sharply.
shit. robert. of course.
"and you weren't even going to tell me?" he snaps, tilting his head slightly, his glasses lowering on the bridge of his nose.
"i have been rereading your email like its another language, trying to figure out why the hell my secretary did not even think to inform me about what was being discussed in this meeting?" raising his hand to flail at his computer screen, tremoring with anger.
he is just so confused as to why his wonderful, perfectly competent secretary would act so out of character?
something about 'my secretary' makes you flutter. you hate that even in his disapproval, he still has a string that ties you to him.
"not even informing me, but personally humiliating me by talking to another hirer about a role you are already working under my roof, using your work hours for outside matters"
his scolding causes a large cut to your chest.
you craved his attention because you were already comfortable with his approval, not knowing you could lose this too. your safety blanket was crumbling between your fingers.
"i used 20 minutes- it's takes me 20 minutes to get you that coffee you like" you try to justify as you feel yourself picking at the skin next to your nails.
"that's work related. that is one of your many roles as secretary. you used 20 minutes to chat with him" he counters harshly, his eyes twitching with frustration.
"it wasn't a chat" you exhale, trying to defrost your body from his searing gaze, seeking comfort to the floor again.
"right. we never got to what the hell you even discussed in this 'meeting'." he storms around his desk, leaning his back against the wood, facing you, crossing his arms as he hovers over you.
"so, what did he offer then, hm? better salary? better location? bigger role?"
the more he speaks, the more he angers himself at thought you would ever consider working under another company… another person other than him.
he forces his mind not to go there but he can't help it. this whole thing felt like an insult.
"it doesn't matter…" you murmur softly.
"then why did you take this meeting?" he spat with irritation, spiking his cortisol, as he uncrosses his arms to grip the desk behind him.
trying to burn a splinter into his palm as if testing he wasn't dreaming this horrible nightmare.
he feels like he is repeating himself. he just needs to understand why.
"is it me? you can't work with me anymore, is that it?" raising his voice, ripping the band aid behind his intrusive thought.
was it him? did he push you too hard finally causing you to break?
"it's not you, sir" you mutter, curling the toes in your heel, still refusing to look at the wrath morphing his furrowed brows. you stare at his shoes feeling his frame engulf you from above.
but it was him, wasn't it? those stupid 20 minutes you wasted was all for him, trying to get him to notice you.
but it only got you here, getting yelled at by your boss. it was always about him.
"not me? then, is it him?" he snaps, painted as a taunt as he raises his thick brows.
"what?" you shriek, baffled at his accusation, as you finally look up at him.
"what!" he exclaims "you bring a random guy in here that you say is a friend, smile at him like he is your boss, sit right next to him so unprofessionally and after a job interview, he asks you out and you just accept like that. if its not for that guy, why else are you leaving?"
the words ramble ferociously out of his mouth before he can stop himself.
"i am not le-" you try to interject before sunghoon could get the wrong idea. but it was too late.
"and as a hirer, why the hell would he ask you out? he tries stealing my secretary by talking her up for a job and then immediately asking her out on a date?!" he continues to vent, looking around his office like the molecules in the air would be listening, nodding along to his insanity.
that stupid 'my' pronoun again, you wish you could eradicate from the language because of how much it distracted you.
"you don't see his intentions?" his eyes widening, you swore it would pop out of its sockets.
he genuinely looked like a time traveller convincing you to follow his prophecy before it was too late.
"what intentions?!" you scoff dumbfoundedly. you can't even think to defend yourself.
you want to blindly follow the yellow brick road into sunghoon's psychosis. you have never heard your usually logical boss sound so… irrational?
"he is using you! he knows you are the best secretary in this industry and he knows you already. i mean how else is he going to convince you?"
the compliment would normally make the blood rush to your cheeks, but his spiralling conspiracy theory, out of 'noble' protection, is not allowing you to get a word in.
you feel your blood trail to your head instead, warning you of a migraine if you didn't stop sunghoon, like now.
"sir!" you yell, silencing him abruptly "i am not leaving" you sigh, announcing flatly.
"you aren't?" you can hear the relief as he asks, his grip on the desk behind him loosening.
"no, sir" you shake your head feebly.
"good." he mutters reverently, the stiffness in his back smoothened, the desk behind him caressing his relaxed spine like fingers on a piano.
"good?" you clear your throat.
the euphoria of not being in trouble hits your sinuses as you take your first breath, like being pulled to the surface after drowning.
you start to feel the consequences of your compulsions as the panic lifts from your veins.
reality grounding itself in the stinging of your peeled skin near your nails and the tension in your toes uncurling themselves in your heel.
"mm" he nods firmly, staring at your shaken frame regretfully.
only just noticing the tremor you had been hiding, too blinded by his own fear to notice.
he didn't mean to worry you so much, but you really worried him too.
"because i don't want you leave" he adds softly, pushing his body off the wood, taking a gentle step closer. petting the ground beneath him, trying to exorcise any tension left engraved in the office.
"yeah?" you question hesitantly, matching his softness.
he nods reassuringly as he takes another step, crouching in front of you, gazing up at you pleadingly as he holds the arm of your chair.
"you are the perfect secretary" he utters earnestly, a twitch of vulnerability passing through his glasses.
you exhale quietly at the compliment but its overridden by your disappointment.
in the end, you would only be a secretary for Park Finances.
until, his free hand reached for yours, like a prince offering a dance.
your fingers curling around his slender fingers as he rubs his thumb over the picked skin standing up around your nails, soothing it remorsefully.
which causes your other hand to clutch the arm of your chair instinctually, leaning forward nervously as you stare into his lenses.
it's like your skin is learning touch for the first time.
"i couldn't do this without you." his voice drops to a low whisper as he leans into your space, feeling his soft face slightly graze the skin of your cheek.
as the phonemes graze his lips, you feel invigorated.
this is all you have wanted to hear whilst working under park sunghoon.
to be someone worthy of his side. worthy of his attention. worthy of those words.
but these words stitched with the strokes of his fingers on your skin, the warmth of his face hitting yours, and his gaze filled with reverence trying to dispel your nervousness, you have to bite back the smile forced by the pathetic ecstasy you feel at this newfound intimacy.
physically not being able to form a sentence, you exhale shakily as you turn to look at him, eyeing three small moles constellating his face like stars.
goosebumps creep up your skin at his closeness, accidently glancing at his lips.
his lips prick up into a small smile that makes him look younger, bringing his lips to yours.
he kisses softly, almost hesitant, with a small, gentle peck as his glasses bumps into your nose before pulling away apologetically.
"o-oh sorry" he says in a low voice and you can't help but excitedly giggle at his awkwardness.
you are surging with a strange high. the smoke of your soul is trying to desperately ground itself in your skin.
you can't fathom it. your boss just kissed you. park sunghoon just kissed you.
it feels supernatural. like this would only occur in an alternate dimension. the dimension conjured up by your rem sleep.
you are worried your dimples will staple into place with how much you are smiling right now.
"no- no it's okay" you whisper quickly between breathy giggles, hiccupped by your exhilaration, as he stands up to take off his lenses and place them on the desk behind him.
"don't laugh" he says but he can't stop his smile from appearing.
you stare shamelessly at his gentle look.
his small eye scrunch from his strained viewing without his glasses, paired with his boyish, wide grin, his fangs and bunny teeth on display, as a few strands of his hair fall in front of his brows, protesting the absence of his glasses.
your heart tightens with how endearing he looks like this. not your punishing boss, just sunghoon.
drugged on your adrenaline, you stand up from your chair and tiptoe to lean back in, kissing him deeper with adoration, and he catches you with an arm around your waist.
you feel his smile against your lips, which you can't help but reciprocate as you rest your hand on his nape.
you feel ecstatic, you want to pinch yourself hoping this isn't one of your fake scenarios that escaped your bedsheets where it resides.
you sigh against his lips as he presses into your upper lip softly.
you tilt your head, chasing his upper lip, while he brings his slender fingers to cup your jaw to raise your chin to kiss deeper, feeling the cold metal of his watch against your flushed face.
you feel lightheaded.
you don't know if its the blood rushing to your head from your neck doing its best to keep up with this kiss or how unreal this feels.
you can't believe you are actually making out with your boss in his own office.
you rake your fingers into his void-black hair in between the kiss, satisfying the many intrusive thoughts formed over the years, which delightfully elicits a low groan from sunghoon.
warm, shallow breaths skims against your lips as you pull back slowly to drop your head, resting your neck for a second.
you feel a little embarrassed. his thumb moves to the sole of your neck, rubbing it soothingly as a silent apology, but he is not able to hide his smile.
continuing his ministrations, he ducks his head to the other side of your neck, grazing his nose on your skin, inhaling your scent, before placing soft pecks under your jaw.
he slowly trails down to the juncture between your neck and your shoulder.
stimulated by his gentle pecks and the small circles of his thumb, your eyes flutter shut and you sigh in a weak stutter "s-sir", gripping his hair like an anchor.
he presses his lips harder against your neck before pulling back with a teasing nip, his fangs tickling your skin.
"say my name, angel" he whispers, his lips petting your skin with every word.
"s-sunghoon" you moan as you feel his tongue caressing your skin rewardingly, lips connecting with your neck as it builds a faint mark.
he pulls back slowly to look at your dazed face; cheeks crimson, lips parted, blinking in unsynchronised flutters.
he copies your blinking with a teasing smile, chuckling lowly before silencing himself by pecking your cute expression.
"just tell me… why you took this stupid job offer if you aren't leaving?" he asks gently, cupping both of your cheeks, squeezing your face into a small pout.
"sunghoon" you look away shyly "it wasn't a job offer…" you reveal, bringing your hand to rub his wrist that is pressing lightly against your face.
"it was a fake meeting… to get you jealous" you say nervously, looking into his waiting gaze "i- i thought you just saw me as a secretary."
he chuckles while shaking his head, closing his eyes to press a soft kiss to your forehead "i'll show you the scratch marks on the printer later."
he then sinks his head to meet your lips once more and whispers against your lips "you're my secretary."
he plays with the hem of your miniskirt, his slim fingers grazing against your thigh "and you are never wearing these again."
