Five Company Values Is One Value Too Many
In a study that looked at hundreds of hospitals as well as a toy company, researchers found that leaders are prone to adopting “blurry visions” of their organizations’ missions, using abstract language that offers no visual images around which employees can build a shared sense of purpose. The study, led by Andrew M. Carton of the Wharton School, also finds that leaders tend to adopt too many key values. Ideally, companies’ mission statements should contain image-evoking words and no more than 4 values, the researchers say.

More-Optimistic CEOs Get Less Total Pay
For CEOs, a 1-standard-deviation increase in a particular measure of optimism is associated with 2% lower total compensation, says Clemens A. Otto of HEC Paris. Drawing on data from U.S. firms, Otto shows that CEOs whose behavior (in exercising options and forecasting earnings) indicates high optimism receive smaller stock-option grants and fewer bonus payments than their peers, possibly because their rosy expectations for their future earnings preclude demands for higher compensation. Although optimistic chief executives cost the corporation less in terms of compensation, they may be costly in other ways, such as through misguided investments, Otto suggests.
Sharing Financials Helps Employees Make Smarter Decisions
Frontline employees are responsible for keeping customers happy. But when people focus on delivering great customer service, they can forget that the business has to make money too. Should I schedule yet another service visit? Should I forgive this bounced-check fee? Should I honor that expired warranty? If you’re going to ask frontline workers to make these difficult decisions, teach them about key financial indicators so they’ll know the costs. Think about creating a daily or weekly dashboard showing relevant customer-feedback scores and comments, along with key financial numbers – variance to budget, cost per customer, etc. Employees will learn to track the short-term tradeoffs and will naturally try to keep costs under control. This can also help in the long term. If they schedule extra service visits, for example, or regularly honor those expired warrantees, the costs of service may rise. But there will be a payoff in greater customer loyalty. Adapted from “Track Customer Experience, but Don’t Forget the Financials” by Bill Fotsch.

Win Someone Over by Asking for Advice
Asking for advice is a powerful way to win someone over. Whether it's negotiating for a raise or trying to win support for a proposal, the simple gesture of soliciting advice can make you more likable, encourage your counterpart to see your perspective, and rally commitment. And the beauty of this approach is that it costs so little. When you ask an opponent for advice, you flatter the person by valuing his or her opinions and expertise. For example, before you start making your case in a negotiation, ask the other person questions. Let him or her experience the "joy of talking." Asking for advice also puts the other person in your shoes. He or she will see your perspective and become sympathetic to your cause. Doing this can turn your adversaries into your champions. Adapted from “ Win Over an Opponent by Asking for Advice” by Katie Liljenquist and Adam Galinsky.
Make Exercise Part of Your Work Routine
Regular exercise can produce countless benefits—from improved concentration and sharper memory to enhanced creativity and lower stress—all of which boost workplace performance. Yet many of us believe we don’t have the time. So instead of viewing exercise as something you do for yourself, consider physical activity as part of the work itself. Here are a few ways to incorporate more exercise into your routine:
Identify a physical activity you like. You’re more likely to stick with an activity if you enjoy doing it. If you’re not into treadmills, try tennis or swimming or dancing.
Invest in improving your performance. Don’t think of it as “getting some exercise.” Focus on mastering an activity. Hire a coach, enroll in a class, and buy the right clothing and equipment.
Become part of a group. Find an exercise regimen that involves other people. It can be more fun and keep you committed.

Regular Exercise Is Part of Your Job
When we think about the value of exercise, we tend to focus on the physical benefits. Lower blood pressure, a healthier heart, a more attractive physique. But over the past decade, social scientists have quietly amassed compelling evidence suggesting that there is another, more immediate benefit of regular exercise: its impact on the way we think.
Studies indicate that our mental firepower is directly linked to our physical regimen. And nowhere are the implications more relevant than to our performance at work. Consider the following cognitive benefits, all of which you can expect as a result of incorporating regular exercise into your routine:
Improved concentration
Sharper memory
Faster learning
Prolonged mental stamina
Enhanced creativity
Lower stress
Exercise has also been show to elevate mood, which has serious implications for workplace performance. I’m willing to bet that your job requires you to build interpersonal connections and foster collaborations. Within this context, feeling irritable is no longer simply an inconvenience. It can directly influence the degree to which you are successful.
