✨ LET’S HEAR IT FOR THE BOYS ✨

struggling to understand why the boys of The Wilds S2 are facing so much hate from the fandom – their stories are interesting, vital, and add so much to the tapestry of the show’s narrative about the terror that is coming-of-age. I love the girls the most and always will but the point of television is narrative and stakes and expansion – besides, I really fucking loved all the girls’ shit this season!!!! We didn’t lose!! We just got even more than we wanted!!! 

I also think the intense hate for the show’s creators bc of all this is weird; assuming the people responsible for a television show you love are your greatest enemy is truly bizarre behavior bc they are the people who spend the most time crafting and thinking about and loving these characters and this story. Extremely off to just assume the worst of them bc of a plot point you didn’t like, when every interview is so thoughtful and every cast member is so clearly and visibly thrilled with their work environment and this season

i can’t stop thinking about how the boys were set up to fail, and gretchen assessed their results as failure, but… they didn’t? they faced more extreme danger with the jaguar and overcame it as a group, they (mostly) peacefully overcame an act of violence and ejected the perpetrator from their group, they had their arguments and divided but then peacefully came together again. at the time they were rescued, there was the violence between raf and seth but everyone else was peaceful and fine. look at that frisbee scene. this was not a lord of the flies scenario at all.

and that’s in spite of everything. the boys had less wilderness experience than the girls. they had more internal conflict coming in. they faced more real danger, with the jaguar and especially with seth. but what amazes me is that so many of the choices they made, that we would assume they made out of fear or anger, they made out of kindness. the group ejected seth because they were trying to protect josh from his assaulter. they refused to discuss what happened on day 15 not because they were threatened or scared to but out of kindness to josh. the group divided because they were grappling over how much kindness they should show seth, and most of them left kirin and josh because they weren’t showing enough kindness. i’m just fascinated by this narrative where the boys were set up to fail, and they actually didn’t, because to everyone’s surprise they eventually chose kindness every time.

the wilds season 2 is just a Jaguar circles the boys tents, the girls have rotations to take care of their most vulnerable, the boys run for their lives to avoid being eaten, the girls are busy moving, the boys kill that damn Jaguar, Leah and Rachel discover how flutes work and give an impromptu concert, the boys have a criminal trial, the girls have a birthday party

i think season three is gonna be so funny. take a group of scattered and slightly unhinged girls who have just gained a deep sense of self confidence and are also very gay. and a group of boys that are simultaneously emotionally devastated and emotionally stunted and possess an extremely tenuous sense of comradery. and put them on an island together.
