But Lex was her mom, and they had this huge thing in common. Lex being on her side for this felt good. It made her feel like so much less of a biological fuckup to know that her mom had her back, even if that mom was also the Queen of Kryptonite.

She doesn’t know enough about the world when she tears out into it. All she knows is that she’s a girl, people can’t see that, and that the city is grieving a man that looks a lot like her.

So she does the only thing she can: She takes his symbol, some pills, and, in her transition’s heady puberty, becomes what the city needs: a hero.

And it works. The Metropolis Kid, they call her. She kisses girls and boys with impunity, splashes herself across the front pages of the Inquisitor and the Planet alike, and waltzes into nightclubs without ID – everyone knows who she is.

Which works nicely, because she really doesn’t.

The world doesn’t know what to do with her, but she wears the symbol of the house of El, and that matters. She takes a whirlwind world tour, loves and fights and makes something of herself, and makes him proud.

At least, she hopes she does.

She asks, once, struggling to comprehend Machiavelli, why she isn’t allowed out. There’s a world outside this place, she knows.

“The world isn’t a safe place for a teenage girl, darling.”

She thinks it should be. She thinks she could make it safe, if they only let her in it. She’s strong, and fast, and can shoot lasers from her eyes – what more could the world need from a hero?

But for now, she waits, and studies, and listens to what they tell her. Takes the pills they gave her when she told them she was a she. Hears the story of her father, a hero imprisoned.

Her name is Alexandra Luthor, and she is Cadmus.
