hi i actually rlly like your critiques ! they point out the things that seem kind of strange or bad but you also keep in mind that there are still rlly good aspects of the show!! i also think you seem like a nice person in general! keep it up! :)

i know i havent really posted here as often anymore either but mostly its just kind of draining to do so and then immediately get swarmed with hate. and i DO like a lot about the show -- i wouldn’t be criticizing it so much if i didn’t! 

a large part of what led me to feel disappointed with it was how good the first 2 seasons were; i absolutely adored them and i think in a lot of ways the writing has slipped, and the art quality definitely has. 

that doesn’t mean i hate SU overall; it’s 100% possible to find flaws in things you still enjoy on some level & when i do critique stuff it’s not because i detest the show or something. i have kept up with it since i caught back up a month or two ago and overall i do still like it, there’s just a lot abt it that disappoints me. if that makes sense?

Your recolour of pearl actually works so much bette than the original in my opinion! Like the dulled out colours could be interpreted as portraying that kind of dull and 'you must fit in without expressing yourself' kind of feel (I) get from homeworld~ Would it be ok if i made some fanart using the colour pallete you chose?

i’m glad it came across that way, as that was my intent! (so that when she chooses to go for a more vivid/saturated palette, it’s more of an outright statement?) you definitely can use the palette! i don’t mind at all!

children’s media should not be exempt from critique by any stretch of the imagination. i want to go on to write for children’s media. this is pretty relevant for someone like me who is going to college for this.

that said, any su critical person doesn’t honestly need to ‘justify’ why they feel like criticizing a form of media that they have the right to consume. (and ANY form of media that IS to be consumed should NEVER be ‘exempt’ from criticism!) 

the majority of su’s online fandom are teenagers and adults. the show writers know this and have encouraged this. are they also wrong for supporting the idea that ‘kids shows’ aren’t just for people under the age of 10?

not to mention that i’m literally autistic and animation is a special interest for me. if that makes me a “dumbass” by your standards, that’s on you

considering that a good portion of pearl’s character was supposed to revolve around her belonging to nobody and rebelling against her ‘intended role’, the reveal that she was PD’s pearl and basically never actually rebelled against her original owner at all (and was some kind of ‘happy slave’ who loved her slave owner) is super fucked up, imo

so here’s a proposed alt version of pearl who was originally WD’s pearl but rebelled and joined the CGs (the latter palette being her palette after doing so)

anyway the main reason i stopped posting here is that i genuinely couldnt find anything to like enough about the show anymore to justify continuing to critique it or invest time into it at all

i understand that rose’s not-very-quartz-like palette is meant to be visual shorthand for her alignment with humans / the earth

but i feel from a worldbuilding / lore standpoint having the palettes swapped would have made some more sense so long as she still looks sort of human-adjacent / pleasing to the eye

the fact that PD could have masqueraded as a quartz -- gems that, as far as we have seen (and we have seen a lot of quartz gems, counting the famethyst) consistently had pale hair as a largely undeviating trait -- and not have been questioned at all is a little confusing in-universe

i get that she made the RQs so it can be handwaved but having to handwave it at all is kind of not great

ignoring the gem placement change (i’ll just believe that diamonds can rotate their gems), we’ve only ever seen reformations and shapeshifting use colors from the same general palette, not change their hues entirely. so this redesign would have their colors literally swapped / matching

but you could swap these around (and have rose as the more ‘human looking’ form) and still have a nicer palette anyway i think (less neon purpley-pink and more peachy/red toned, which is also closer to both irl gems)

I really don't understand why this is such a huge issue. Him becoming pink doesn't erase anything about Lars and like you said, shows the similarity of him and Lion. That's important to the story! It doesn't erase that he's Filipino! If Saddie, Greg or Connie were in his postition, they too would be pink as well. This isn't white washing or being disrespectful to brown skin because he turned into a pink zombie. That's the default color. Your edit doesn't even lookl off color....

uhh… if connie turned the color of Lion, that would definitely be whitewashing?

her skin would be getting considerably lighter, even if it turned pink in the process as well. thats… the definition of whitewashing? like… thats whitewashing, bud

as such, i’m sure you can understand why it’s the exact same with lars

also, uh, what? my edit is definitely off color from lars original color palette, as you can see here:

?????? the biggest difference from the canon one is that i didn’t lighten his skin or make him totally pink. 

either way, it’s still worse than if they’d just left his skin as it was imo, i was just trying to make a point abt how they could have changed the palette but done it more subtly.
