It was first period: health class. As a 10th grader, I had begun to express myself more. I also lived in now. Never thought about the future and forgot about the past. Just now.
The topic of the day was fear. Our health teacher, Mr. Macnamera-or Mac for short- was a man who you could trust. You didn’t know why, but you did anyway. This day he went around the class, asking what the students were most afraid of. You got the typical answers; heights, snakes, spiders, and one nerdy boy said the dark. Were they hiding what they were most afraid of, or were they truly frightened of these things?
I for one was never scared of the dark, snakes or anything like that. What was I really afraid of? I sat in my desk, pondering my fears, when Mr. Mac looked at me and asked the question I wasn’t ready to answer. “Teresa, what are you afraid of?” I thought for a few seconds, and then what I feared was suddenly clear to me.
“The future,” I said timidly.
Mr. Mac stopped asking what the students were afraid of. He paused for what seemed like an eternity. Finally he spoke; “I think that was the only truthful answer I’ve gotten today. How many other students are afraid of their future?”
To my surprise, almost the entire class raised their hands; even Jared ‘diamond shoes’ Klein, who was the richest kid in the school and could buy his way into any college or job he pleased.
“I think it’s very common that teenagers like yourselves are afraid of the path that lies ahead for them." Said Mr. Mac. "It’s a scary road, the transition from adolescence to adulthood.”
And at that the bell rung, signaling all students to head to their second period class. I spent the rest of the day finally thinking about what I was going to do with my life; time to get out of the present and into the future.
