Thom’s new Keyboard Setup
Thom has generally used whatever MIDI keyboard his bandmates bring along to play any sampled parts necessary. For example, back in the early 2000′s he used Colin’s Novation Bass Station as a MIDI controller on tracks like Kid A and Backdrifts. He also used the Novation for the early 2002 performances of Myxomatosis, attaching a strap to the keyboard and dancing around the stage as he played. That didn’t last very long, but Thom has a new small MIDI keyboard - the Alesis Q25. It’s pretty nondescript as MIDI keyboards go, but it’s light and Thom had his fitted with a wireless transmitter. When he needs to play a complex part, he stands at his Prophet 08 as on the last tour (or even sits at it, as I’ll discuss next), but when the part is only single notes – as on Ful Stop – Thom can dance around the stage with total freedom.

After his Sequential Circuits Prophet 5 broke in 2001, Thom shied away from bringing polyphonic analogue synthesizers on tour. Nigel bought a new Prophet 5, which Thom used to play the bass on All I Need as well as on A Moon Shaped Pool, but Thom didn’t bring an analogue poly-synth on tour until 2012, when he brought along a Dave Smith Instruments Prophet 08. The Prophet became a favorite of Thom’s, being used for new songs written on tour, like Identikit and Ful Stop as well as for the subsequent Atoms for Peace album and tour. On the 2016 tour, the Prophet 08’s usage has only increased. Not only does it feature on tracks from the new album, but Thom even uses it for Everything In Its Right Place – the first time that a synthesizer (rather than a Rhodes piano or piano) has been used for a performance of the track. I also suspect that the Alesis Q25 is being used to trigger the Prophet 08 on Ful Stop.
