𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐏𝐀𝐒𝐓

Vyrse was born in a small mining town known as Kolene, just off the coast of Coronet City in Corellia. Their mother passed away when they were 3, leaving them in the care of their single father, a miner named Jado. Try as he might, it was impossible to keep up with Vyrse growing up. They were reckless, they were energetic, they were ambitious, they were curious, they were just too much to handle. It often frustrated him, and he took it out on them. His hours spent at work in the mines grew and grew - yet they somehow were falling deeper and deeper into poverty. Vyrse ended up having to raise themself from the age 9. They still loved their dad - but it was clear he didn’t want anything to do with them. Naturally, they fell down the path most Corellians did. Especially those with ample free time. Vyrse started studying the ships they were so fascinated with, and learned to fly when they were 13. One of the fastest flyers in Kolene, they came to feel a lot more comfortable in their ship than they felt at home. The next step that came natural to a Corellian? Smuggling. By 18 they were a fully fledged smuggler, mostly of weapons, sometimes of spices. They aimed to one day help their father get out of the mines, to repay him for how difficult it was to raise them on his own, to let him finally live in peace. But...

𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐏𝐑𝐄𝐒𝐄𝐍𝐓

Something was wrong. WAY WRONG. Vyrse was running spices to a contact on Batuu when they found themselves being tailed by PIRATES. Not something they weren’t used to - it just would have been an easier task to handle if they had a partner. No, they worked solo. Didn’t particularly want to burden more people with their presence like they had burdened their father. Instead, they swerved and dodged and evaded the pirates - but their victory holler was premature. They had CRASHED, they had BLACKED OUT. When they woke up in the rubble of what was once their precious ship, they found that they were in the middle of a fight between rebels and imperials at Fondor. Confused, but not willing to miss out on the fun, they joined the fight.

𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐒𝐎𝐍𝐀𝐋𝐈𝐓𝐘

Vyrse is independent to a fault - they feel they need to prove their worth constantly, due to their rough upbringing. They take risks whether it's truly necessary, or just to show off. Despite having a hardened exterior, they don’t hide their soft side at all - they are a shoulder to cry on or a listening ear when needed. They have a volatile temper learned from their father - apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree, huh? They’re an excellent flier - they like to say they’re better than even Han Solo, but they know it isn’t true. Confidence is key though - fake it til ya make it.

    / / hop’a took off a single glove, allowing it to rest on the blaster on his hip- reading it. he knew what he had to do but, frankly, didn’t want to do it. it was too much effort- it wasn’t anything he was hired to do. feelings had to be put aside if he wanted to make sure his own hide would be okay.

  he heard the footsteps and looked up, giving an exasperated sigh and making eye contact with a familiar face. “ay,” he greeted, giving a nod to them. they were interrogating him- or trying. the kiffar put his glove on before turning to address vyrse. “i wouldn’t say over my head. maybe water up to my eyes, but standing i’m on my toes- i’m copacetic,” he replied, giving a casual shrug. “what is it that you want?” he asked, staring at them with raised eyebrows.

Crossed arms as he barely explained himself to them. “You’ve gotta answer my question first, Hop’a.” A glance up and down, almost intrusive. “What’s up, scared I’m gonna catch you the middle of another one of your schemes?”

han raised an eyebrow as he watched the being stare for a moment. it was suspicious enough, but also somewhat amusing. when they finally comment, he laughed a bit, “ha– funny,” he said, leaning back, watching them, “and what did you decide then?”

“I’m leaning more towards very small wookie, but we’ll see if you can change my mind.” A playful laugh as they rest their elbows on the bar. “I’m Vyrse. Somethin’ tells me you’re a big deal.”

    / / when his alert went off to a holomessage, hop’a walked to the speeder and flicked on the switch. the man was being summoned to coruscant for a mission. the man let out a long sigh, running his hand through his hair. he could only imagine what it was this time. the pay better have been worth the trouble he was going through trying to hide his involvement with the empire. hop’a sat on the speeder, trying to buy himself some time before it was time to head out.

Vyrse had been leaning casually against one of the many buildings surrounding them, waiting for something interesting that would catch their eye. Something to do, something to pursue, ANYTHING. They’d heard whispers of something happening on Takodana, and so they’d been scanning the area for any way to get in on the action, see if the whispers held any truth. When their attention had been drawn by someone’s alert going off as he walked past them. Head turned to watch where he Was headed --- just over to his speeder, seemed to be killing time. Approached quickly, and with their blaster at the ready at their side. They knew of this Hop’a, and knew he was usually up to no good. “Hey. You seem like you’re a little in over your head about something, big guy. Care to tell me what it is you’re waiting for?”

      the universe was finally starting to smile down on cara, she thought as she listened to the other’s story, they were obviously a smuggler, and they were exactly what cara needed. this was a chance at a mutually beneficial situation, cara needed passage out of this planet, anywhere would do, so of course she was going to offer help. ❝alright❞ cara said with a nod, ❝i don’t have credits, but if you need parts i don’t mind getting my hands dirty to get them, i am an average mechanic though, but i’m good with my hands❞ she admitted, cara was a better healer than a mechanic, but of course that was in the past, all she was now was a soldier. ❝all i ask in exchange is a ride…❞

A bit of surprise when she agreed so easily --- it wasn’t often that they could get someone on their side, especially after such a rough meeting. And especially when they’re so stressed. They didn’t tend to be the most . . . amicable person, but somehow they found themself lucky enough to have a partner of sorts to sort out their current issue. “Uh, yeah, that’s fine. All good. I’m a pretty exceptional mechanic. I can hook you up with a ride if you can help me scrap some parts and get to Nal Hutta.”

the smuggler had noticed the person staring from the bar of the cantina for some time. they were being obvious enough. something he doubted they knew. with a breath, he moved to sit tnext to them, ordering another drink before glancing in their direction, “if you wanted to ask somethin’ should’ve just come over, kid.”

Vyrse was somewhat starstruck --- I mean, a smuggler turned war hero, and a Corellian like themself no less? They’d always made the bold statements that they were better than even Han Solo himself, even though they knew inside it weren’t as true as they played it up to be. And now they found themself in the presence of the man himself. They hadn’t realized they’d been staring so obviously, for so long, but they certainly realized it after he took the seat next to them. Play it cool, Teckla. “Nah, I was actually taught that if I had nothing nice to say, I shouldn’t say anything at all. And all I could think was, that’s either a really small wookie or a really gross man.” A cool smirk followed by a sip from their bottle --- totally nailed it.

rey smiled a bit at their response, “fine– that sounds like a fair trade off,” she as she watched them sit on the bed. she had a feeling they had quite a story ahead, if she had to guess. she didn’t mind listening, though. she only wanted to make vyrse feel comfortable around her. as rey sat next to her, she waited for them to say something, eyebrows raising. she paused at the answer, it was… clearly a lie but she wasn’t going to call them out on it. “well, i’m certain the bartender appreciated your help.”

“have you situated yourself here yet? i haven’t,” she said after a moment to change the subject, the silence making rey a bit uncomfortable. she enjoyed vyrse’s company really– perhaps more than she should but… they were much more experienced than rey. their life was so much more… exciting. “i’m glad you’re here though, i may have actually missed you.” 

Relief as Rey didn’t further question their story. They weren’t sure they’d even believe it themself, and were less sure that Rey believed it, but it was enough to move on. The brief pause had worried them, though, for a split moment they feared they might’ve said the wrong thing. But she spoke again, the feeling of relief returned. “Yeah, I think I might actually like it around here a little better if I’m being honest.” Chuckling softly as they spoke. “Shaking things up helps keep me on my toes, things were getting too predictable.” Chuckle fading into a sigh, landing on a smile as they looked back to Rey, meeting her eyes. “I might’ve missed you, too. You seem to have settled pretty well in here too, yeah?”

Mechanics had never been Bastila’s forte - she left those sorts of things to the rest of the crew - so she had no idea what a temporal particle buffer was, or how long it was likely to take to be fixed, but she told herself that didn’t matter. Patience was a quality that every good Jedi possessed, so she could wait.

“Of course. I don’t mean to interrupt your work.” Bastila glanced at Vyrse’s hands and offered an awkward half-smile at the joke. “I’m Bastila. It’s a pleasure to meet you.” She hesitated, “I… ah, don’t have much experience, but if it would speed things perhaps I could help…?”

“Oh, it’s not a bother at all.” But it kind of was --- Vyrse often preferred working alone, and repairing their ship took concentration, a concentration that might be hindered due to the presence of the other. They weren’t just gonna leave her behind, though. That would be cruel.

“Eh, It shouldn’t take too long, I don’t think. Just a few replacements --- er, substitutions at least --- and we’ll be able to get her off the ground. But if you insist, I could walk you through some things. It never hurts to know a bit about mechanics.” They flashed a smile at her as they walked along, adjusting their grip on the parts they held. “Why do you need to get to Coruscant anyway?”

Arms cross easily over her small frame, an eyebrow raising slightly at the chuckle the other offers and Kylia lets a small devilish smirk toy with the corners of her lips. “Perhaps. Though, if you don’t feel much like talking….” She trails off, raising her left hand to look at her nails before she lowers it, slightly brushing off her pant leg enough to move the flap of her tunic to show off the silver hilt of her lightsaber attached to her side. There always will be other ways of getting people to talk. Of getting them to confess to whatever it is they didn’t want to talk about. “Just because you refuse doesn’t mean I can’t coax it out of you in other ways. Everyone has their breaking point, you’re no different.”

“You think you scare me? That’s cute.” A defiant statement that was practically spat at the other from the smuggler’s lips. Arms now crossed, glaring at the other beneath a raised brow. They’d dealt with threats like this almost every day, they’d grown used to it in a sense. And they hadn’t ever given in, why would they now? This was no different at all. “I’ve dealt with more than you can imagine. Try me.”

kanan snorted some at their response, head tilting over to direct his attention towards them. it was a fair enough question, from all outwards appearances– kanan seemed stable. he shrugged, “look, you and i are a lot more alike that you’d expect,” he offered, arms crossing, “i can tell you’re not as bad as you’re trying to seem– is that reason enough?” 

A smirk and a raise of their brows seemed to confirm it. “Maybe we are. But let’s keep that between us, yeah?” Only half joking. It’s hard enough for them to keep their street cred as it is --- it always seemed that just as quickly as they’d pull off something respectable, they’d done something to completely erase that from peoples’ perceptions of them. “I got an image to keep up, gotta be as intimidating as possible if I’m gonna earn any respect.”

There was something almost calming by the other’s response. No matter how much time had passed, no matter how the galaxy had changed, a spacer was still a spacer. How strange it was that the type of people she had once felt the most out of place around would now provide her with a sense of welcomed familiarity.

“It does not need to be smooth. After the time I have had, getting there alive will be enough.” She couldn’t help a degree of bitterness from entering her voice. Bastila hated her plans going awry, and that seemed to have been all that had happened since even before she had awoken in this time. “I need to get to Coruscant, but if you cannot take me the full way, as close as possible will be acceptable.”

Detecting the bitterness in the other’s voice caused their brows to furrow with suspicion. Nevertheless, they were happy to help. “Alive works.” They shrugged, then motioned for the other to follow them to their ship. “Though, it’ll be a second before we get going. Have to fix the temporal particle buffer.” A glance down at the parts they were cradling in their arms to confirm the repairs that needed to be made. “Uh. Coruscant is quite a ways away from here . . . wouldn’t hurt to get acquainted, yeah? I’m Vyrse --- I’d offer my hand but uh,” soft chuckle with another glance downward, “kinda occupied.”

rey snorted at their response, a small smile pulling at her lips. it was sweet, really, but she wasn’t quite sure that was it. she didn’t feel like it was the case, “i just… want to help if i can,” she offered to vyrse, glancing at them again, “you owe me nothing. i’m only glad you’re okay.”

stepping up to her ship, she opened up the door, helping them inside. “do you want to tell me what started that?” she asked as she helped them sit on her makeshift bed, “sure it was nothing?”

“You can try, but you can’t stop me from repaying you. You got my back, I’ve got yours.” They walked into the ship with her help and sighed as they sat on the pseudo-bed. “What started it?” They searched their memory the best they could until it finally came back to them --- Vyrse had tripped over themself, clearly unable to handle their liquor, and stumbled right into the other patron, causing both their drinks to drench him. Unable to ever admit they were in the wrong, however, lead them to the fight that left them in this condition. Would they admit that? No way --- that’s too lame. They felt that the silence was going on for too long, and knew they had to start talking soon. “Uhh . . .” a moment taken to formulate something that would impress Rey. “He was harassing the bartender --- I couldn’t let him keep inconveniencing that lady.” Believable enough.

she figures that there’s no harm in saying no; but, nonetheless, she stays for a long moment as if she is still in contemplation. “alright,” she eventually says. “i’ve got a ship. credits will be split, like you said. but, if you try anything to change that…you’ll be without a ship and without your money,” ventress warns. she’s not in the mood for much else to go awry, but in her experience smuggling, bounty hunting, or anything within a team…they usually have. she turns on her heel, expecting the other to follow her to the banshee if they really intend to take on this job together. “while we’re walking, why don’t you explain to me what we’re getting into?”

“No need to worry, pasty --- I keep my word. We’ll head over to your ship, then take it back to mine to move the cargo and we’re off.” They smirk as they follow behind the other. Vyrse was many things, but a liar was not one of them. At least not outside of work --- when needed, they could lie and cheat and charm their way out of . . . most situations. But if they ever found themselves needing to work with a partner, they made sure to keep their promises. It’s the best, the safest way to go about business. “Alright. The basic rundown is this: I was supposed to be on Nal Hutta by now. Have to personally deliver the cargo to one of Jabba’s allies living there. I wasn’t even told what’s in it --- but, it seems important. A low profile has to be kept --- Jabba wasn’t even there for the deal, he had someone meet me on his behalf over on Karazak of all places. A lot went into trying to make sure none of this is traced back to any of us involved. So, we have to get our asses off of this dustbowl before someone can let Jabba know I’m failing. I’ve got a lot riding on this.”

They scoff in response, arms crossed. “Alright, smartass. If you don’t need my help, you can keep wasting your day sitting here, begging for attention from someone else. I’ve got things to do anyway.” Eyes squint with contempt before turning to walk away.

     eyebrow raised at their words, something else was at play here, this wasn’t just a typical upset, and as much as cara wanted to simply call it a day and walk away, something compelled her to stay. she had enough to worry about thinking about mando and the child, but whoever was in front of her clearly needed help, and cara was not going to turn them away. even if they didn’t sound like the nicest people around, cara didn’t like nice anyways. ❝alright❞ she said nonchalantly, ❝what’s got you all rattled?❞ cara asked, ❝if i can help i’d do it, but i can’t make any promises…❞  

Big sigh, followed by a shift in their position as they now stood fully facing the other. They weren’t fully sure if this was someone they could fully trust with this kind of information, but they were left very few options. They grabbed the others arm and pulled her in closer, to speak in a more hushed tone so the wrong people don’t overhear them. “My ship is down again, and I have . . . some cargo that needs to be delivered. To the Hutts. So you can imagine the kind of stress I’m under.”
