“Public Discourse” - Reggie McCafferty

"Public Discourse" is a series of photographs of a wall painted to impart pro-Trump rhetoric in East Williamsburg. The collection chronicles the succession of changes in the walls façade over a two-month period leading up to the 2016 presidential election as it has been repeatedly altered/vandalized and repainted by the owner to reflect it’s original sentiment.

“Public Discourse” explores the role of the wall as a vehicle for dialogue in a public forum and reflects upon the meaning of private space as it exists in the public sphere.

All photos by Reggie McCafferty taken September 1 - November 1, 2016 in Brooklyn, NY. 32 pages with a cardstock cover, published in an edition of 20 on Election Day 2016.

“Photobombin' started as a project I came up with 3 years ago. I came to New York from LA because at the time the band I was in Xibalba had no tours planned and I was dating a girl from the Bronx. So I wanted to have a vacation in New York while I had down time. I ended up falling in love with New York City being here those 6 months. New York Hip Hop has always been my style even being from California. Usually out of towners always go to your typical tourist attractions. The Empire State Building, The Statue of Liberty, The Freedome Tower, etc. I decided to do my own tour. Being a big Hip Hop fan I decided to go to all the famous murals through New York City that I knew about. I went to the Big Pun mural in the Bronx, Big L in Harlem, The Biggie/Ol' Dirty Bastard in Brooklyn, Jam-Master Jay in Queens, & the Can It All Be So Simple(Which as I got there found out its been covered up for years) in Shaolin. I rode my bike through all 5 boroughs paying my respects to some of the fall soldiers of the Hip Hop culture. As I was exploring I realized I was getting the best tour and not only that but experiencing New York in a way most people that aren't from here would. As I was riding on my tour I started to found more beautiful murals and landmarks, While I was doing this I thought to myself, "Why hasn't this been documented?" Digging into my Hardcore/Punk roots I thought why not make a zine about this? Taking pictures of all the murals and even landmarks. Mix my Hip Hop and Hardcore/Punk ideas together. When I decided to officially move to New York 2 years ago I made it a goal to release this. This zine represents 2 years of me riding around New York, taking pictures, and getting together with some talented friends to put this out.” 

Photobombin’ is a love letter to New York City and one of it's best cultural creations. The book functions as a visual tour guide of historical hip hop landmarks and the murals that pay homage to the artists who built the genre.

La Marca del Ángel features 44 pages of 35mm black and white photographs shot by Reggie McCafferty in and around Mexico City in the wake of the disappearance of the 43 students in the Guerrero province in late 2014.

The murders consumed the city adding an electricity that coursed through every aspect of daily life, a mix of terror and outrage that was palpable in each interaction. Turning away from the protests themselves, these photographs depict the mood of the city during this period of time, capturing the immense weight and gravity of the political killings.

I’ve always found myself surrounded by interesting people. Travelers, skateboarders, punks, graffiti writers and various other sub-sects of low-life subcultures. These were dreamers and story-tellers, daring people who understood that life is best when lived quickly, that things didn’t happen unless you got up off the couch and left the house. They weren’t afraid to take chances and pushed themselves into unfamiliar territory, realizing that although taking risks did not always land you in the most advantageous situations, it usually made for good stories later on.

Blackbox Radio is a compilation of these firsthand accounts, of people telling their own stories about their own trials and experiences. This is the first installment in what will become an ongoing series. Each volume will feature a new topic with stories that touch on that particular theme, all collected on cassette tapes and available for streaming online.
