You've always had a dream of becoming a doctor; saving lives and helping the helpless. But like every big dream, there is always something that comes in between you and that dream.
It happened one evening while you were walking home. The soft breeze blew your hair back and you were lost in thought when suddenly five cop cars pulled up, surrounding you. Their sirens blared through the neighborhood like an alarm. “HANDS BEHIND YOUR HEAD NOW!!”
“Woah woah officers what did I do?!” And no matter how much you protested, they cuffed you and threw you in the back of the car like a sack of potatoes. You were taken into the station and got questioned like a criminal; something you were far from. You were beyond confused when they pulled up several pics of someone who resembled you robbing a store and killing the store owners. You recognized the store as one from your neighborhood. “I swear that wasn't me!!”
They never listened. You were in jail for a month, and when your case was tried, the lawyer that you took didn't fight hard enough. He barely tried. It was like he wanted you to get in jail and that's exactly how you spent the next year and a half until one day a security guard took you to the station where the detectives explained you were mistaken for someone else. To say you were pissed was an understatement and you almost threw hands with the officers.
In the end, you were set free, but the stain it had put on your reputation left you jobless for months. You replayed the day of the court case many times. Your lawyer didn't fight hard because it didn't receive the full amount of money.
“Fucking prick,” you muttered under your breath one evening as you were scrolling through the article of the actual criminal. Your picture was in the article and the striking resemblance made your stomach churn.
And as many weeks passed, you decided you no longer wanted to be a doctor. The injustice you faced left you wanting to become a lawyer. To fight for the innocents as many failed to do. So the process of applying for law school started. At first, it seemed impossible. They rejected you countless times which made you have to apply in LA. The law school sent an email explaining the situation of you not being eligible for it but you pleaded, evening going to the station the next day for an official statement from the detective, proving your innocence.
After careful consideration, you were finally accepted, thus starting your journey as a law student. When you first moved to LA, it felt different, and uncomfortable, but after months of adjusting, you finally knew your way around. You ended up staying with a friend who provided you with everything.
On the first day of law school, you walked in feeling the heavy stares of the students. They were all prestigious kids, coming from different rich families. You felt like an outsider, especially when you heard them murmur about you going to jail. The laughter felt extremely mocking, and you were scared to the point you ended up alone.
That is until one day, while sitting in class at the very back, a beautiful Indian girl walked over, pointing to the seat next to you. “Is this seat taken?”
You were too caught up with her beauty to be able to form a coherent sentence. “U-uh n-no no have a seat. I mean, if you want.”
She smiled and sat down, placing her text books on the table. You suddenly realised that every student in the class had a mountain of text books with their names, except you. “We can share mine,” the girl spoke up.
“Are you sure? You don't…don't mind sitting next to me?”
“Why wouldn't I? Is there something wrong?”
You shook your head, and sunk down further into the chair. When the professor walked in, the session started. The girl placed her text book in the middle of the desk, nudging you to look inside. It felt odd, having someone finally speak to you. She was beautiful, and not judgmental…at least you hope she isn't.
When classes were over, the students parted ways, and as you headed to the library, she walked beside you. “Are you heading to the library?”
“I'm heading there too. Let's go together.” Before you could protest, she grabbed your hand and led you to the library. Finding a table at the far back, Lara and you sat down. The library was quiet, obviously, and you found yourself suddenly feeling flustered. “I realised I never told you my name. I'm Lara. Lara Raj.”
You shook her head and a small smile formed on your lips. “I'm yn. Yn Ln.”
The name instantly clicked in Lara's head, taking her back to the article she read two nights ago. But she chose not to comment on it. After all, she saw the way the other kids treated you this morning.
From that day on, Lara became your only friend. She was smart, wise and absolutely kind. You often wondered if she was using you, or was she just this sweet not to say anything? The other kids continued with their judgments and oftentimes no one wanted to work with you. Lara always showed up and chose you as her partner.
Every day the two of you would meet up at the library to study, or review cases. She was blown away by your intelligence and your ability to see things she couldn't. Little by little, Lara found herself always wanting to be by your side. She was a bit glad she was your only friend because that meant all your attention would be on her.
Two years had passed and you both were still as close as ever. Whenever final exams were happening, you'd spend the entire week at her apartment until it came to a point she asked you to move in with her. You were thrilled because then you'd get to see her every day.
You didn't pay rent, since it was her apartment so you settled on kitchen duties, always whipping up the fanciest of meals just to impress her.
Then one night, she and you were seated on the couch, munching on pizza in your pyjamas on Saturday night. Lara found herself caught in a trance as you yapped away about this new TV show that caught your interest. She couldn't help it. Not when you looked this good. Not when her heart was plummeting out of her chest just by you being near her. She grabbed your collar and smashed her lips onto yours, the pizza falling out of your hand. For a minute, she thought this was the end of the friendship, you weren't kissing back. Then your hands fell on her waist and you tilted your head to deepen the kiss. “Why'd you do that, Lara?” You asked breathlessly once she pulled away for air.
“I couldn't help it. God I'm so fucking in love with you, it's insane.”
“Yeah. Yeah I love you yn. Alot.”
“Lara, do you even know…who I am?”
“No no. My past. The incident.”
“You do?” Your eyes widened and she stared at you like it was an everyday day, which it was. “Well why didn't you say something?”
“What did you want me to say?”
“I don't know-” “If you're talking about me judging you, not talking to you and all that, then no. I'm not those other kids. Have they read the full story? I don't think so. You're human. You're innocent and sometimes things are out of your control.”
You suddenly felt a lump in your throat because wow she really understood you. “Lara…”
“Shh,” Lara placed a finger on your lips and smiled. “Do you love me too?”
She gasped when you pulled her into your lap, kissing her deeply. “Mmhmm you kiss so good, baby.”
You let out a pathetic sound, making her chuckle. The night ended with your clothes on the ground and your body twisted and tangled in hers.
In the final year of law school, you and Lara got an internship at the same law firm, but with different supervisors. You both studied your own cases and at night, you'd sit down and discuss with each other. Eventually, when the day of the trial came, you had to represent someone that was framed for a murder. “You got this baby,” Lara muttered as she fixed your jacket. You were sweating, your nerves buzzing with anxiety. “Hey, look at me,” she cupped your face, “Just think of your client as you years ago. You are the lawyer, so fight like it's your freedom at stake.”
“I will. I will. I love you.”
She smiled and kissed your lips before sending you off while she stayed home to review your case. Around six in the evening, she heard your car stop and eagerly ran outside, only to see you running at her with full speed. “LARA!! WE WON THE CASE!!! WE WON!!”
She squealed as you picked her up and twirled her around. “I knew you could do it baby!!”
“Thank you for believing in me when no one did.”
Years later, you and Lara were now married, and you opened your own law firm together. Everyday was something new, something different but it was fun, and exciting because whatever challenges you both faced, you did it together with someone that loved you beyond reasonable doubt.
