There is no sign forbidding people to play on the grass
"There is no sign forbidding people to play on the grass" - a quote from British writer, Deborah Levy's, memoirs entitled Real Estate. I really like it because I think that means people should be given the opportunity to try out things and learn. The grass might be neat and pristine, but it's there for people to put their bare feet and play on.
Aren't there conversations nowadays that make you feel like they are forbidding you to play on the grass? I've heard a lot of talk about AI and how people fear it because they think it's here to replace us. In the non-fiction sphere, we have ChatGPT taking the world by storm. In the fiction realm, we have the Thunderhead in the addictive Scythe series.
But why must there be a sign forbidding us to play on the grass? AI is the grass; we can still play on it. Ladies and gentlemen, let us not retreat. Intimidation will not work here. Let us keep an open mind about this. What if AI is not here to replace our thinking but to enhance our thinking so we can think even more creatively, ethically and authentically?
Speaking about the unknown, I want to share this quote by Norwegian artist, Sissel Tolaas: "Discovery is what you do when you do not know what you are doing." I guess we are discovering AI and exercising agency in a discovery-Sissel-Tolaas-style way. You don't know what you're gonna find and/or end up with; you gotta keep an open mind.
Still on the process of discovery/creativity, a friend shared this about Lunch Poems by American poet, Frank O'Hara, recently when I asked her about "sardines and oranges": "Basically, the poem is about creativity starting with one thing and then getting something completely [different]. So the artist started with sardines and it wasn't in the final painting and the writer started with oranges and his poem didn't end that way."
Ending on the note of existential dread (haha, don't ask me how - I don't know), how's all that for the search for identity? I will sign off with a quote by Billboard on LDR's (Lana Del Ray's) lead single for the album of the same name, "Did you know that there's a tunnel under Ocean Blvd": "...expertly navigating between resignation and yearning, accepting fate and likewise thrashing against it." May we learn to be expert navigators. Meanwhile, relax - take off your shoes, play on the grass, enjoy the ride.
Conversations
In recent days, I have encountered the involuntary phenomenon of feeling "deeply" about certain things in life, particularly those pertaining to justice and injustice. I don't know how to describe "deeply" in this context. I have qualms about the word "deep" as I have frequently met people who tell me they're deep or are into deep things like deep films, but more often than not, I find that they're rather basic (both the people and the things they're into). I am a rather basic person myself. To feel deeply about something might perhaps be described as pondering about an issue and getting so triggered you may or may not want to punch something or someone. I would probably opt for "something", like a punching bag or a pillow.
When I'm in one of these moods, I find myself asking a lot of questions (some rhetorical), such as:
Why do stupid people exist?
I am kidding.
(No. I ask that nearly every day.)
Start again:
Is it possible to rid the world of ignorance? Does obtaining knowledge equal being educated?
If rid of ignorance, would there still be an underlying sense of bias or prejudice?
Why are some people like wet noodles who only care about saving their own arses? Don't they know their arse is already doomed right from the get-go?
What causes a person to be ashamed of their own culture or race?
Why do some races "worship" other races? Assuming someone were educated of all atrocities committed by all races in history, would he or she still be biased towards a certain race?
Why do people always like to tell girls what to do or think? Go tell boys? See if they like it?
Why do people expect something in return when they decide to give something that was unsolicited?
Why do people lack self-awareness?
Why are some more defensive than others? Incidentally, why are the "others" more combative than the "some"? (Are we human or are we dancer?)
Do you give a damn about popular opinion?
Can you say that you truly "see" someone?
Do you have to label things and people to make you feel more in control?
Can you give an honest opinion without fear of offending people?
Can you stop misquoting things? Can we bring back accurate storytelling?
Do you really need a therapist?
Are you really a mindful consumer?
What's so great about veganism? Have you cooked an honest, hearty meal?
Why don't we delve into and appreciate local cinema and art house productions? Instead, we are guilty of going for things that have been validated by the mass media. If you're thinking about the Oscars, then so am I. Lol. I was thinking, Kudos to them, but let's give it up for Hong Kong cinema and global cinema and many other cinemas and art house productions and things that don't have to get voted on. Things that do not need A-P-P-R-O-V-A-L.
Politics and commerce are best pals, but what has art and ideas got to do with them?
Why do I immediately feel like I have to go the OTHER way when people tell me to go THIS way?
These questions are not meant to be answered, OBVI. Strength often comes in silence. So does the truth. This silence is golden. I also incidentally can't stand people who talk a lot. Maybe because I speak enough for the whole world. Anyway, I just speak to myself a lot. Or speak to God. He always listens but never answers. Oh, JK. Sometimes he does, and I'm like, "Please, no. That's enough."
