( yahya abdul-mateen ii, cis man, he/him ) — Look who it is! If you take a look at our database, you’ll find that LEVI ST. JAMES is a THIRTY-SIX year old VETERINARIAN that’s been in Chicago for TEN YEARS. According to the file, they’re a mutant on LEVEL TWO with the power of FIRE HORSE PHYSIOLOGY. That must be why they’re PASSIONATE and ASSERTIVE. If you ask me, they remind me of a liquor bottle marked by days, blazing chariots with no riders, an empty house where once there was a home. They are affiliated with NOBODY.

“My life is shittier than usual? Yeah.” It turns out that on that particular coin flip, Victor lost. No one wanted to see a dangerous mutant, and insurance rates for arenas and stadiums shot up when they found out that he could control light and sound. Tampering with equipment and possible violence they said—but the subtext was all crystal clear. It still rankled, though he did appreciate the guy’s candor about it all—and at least this wasn’t just some human.

At the mention of the high probability of his kid being a mutant, he sighs. There’s something about a inherent bummer to some of it, even with him being sparkly and shiny, everything always seems to come at a second. Just a close shave off being dead last. “Hey, I found out when I was two years into my career. Maybe she’s an early flower. Maybe she’s a late bloomer. Either way, hopefully she just gets one of the ones that’s less trouble,” he says, shrugging. “Being able to cause cataracts isn’t as fun as it’s cracked up to be when you start out.”

His feet lift off the ground, trying to at least match the man’s height a little. It’s been a while since he’d talked to someone that wasn’t Terry about stuff like this, so Victor relishes it, trying to tamp down his emotion. The light that he misses, snaking from him like a small aurora betrays him, however—hovering and shimmering as he talks. “Wait—the gene’s strong? You from that Sanctum place or something?”

“ yeah. ” there was no beating around the bush -- that had been the question in question (i’m tired let me have this). “ well, man... the world can be a pretty shit place, ” levi replied -- a sentiment he felt victor might share. definitely a pessimistic sentiment, not a sentiment he would share with most, but talking to a man whose life had been flip turned upside down just for being a mutant ? hell, levi could say he would never know for sure... but he knew for sure: his own life had been flipped when the true cons had been discovered, and there was no real denying that a contributing factor to carina’s sole custody ruling was nothing but his appearance. even if he didn’t look like half of his face was going to burn the house down ( which it was not ), it was still plain for anyone to see: he was a mutant. “ yeah, her mom’s got a really light one. here’s to hoping she follows, y’know ? ” god, here was to hoping ! even a mutation that just wasn’t visible could still make her life far harder than necessary -- january looked just as human as the next person, but being able to manipulate reality ? horrid stress, he imagined. nonetheless, he chuckled at victor’s joke over causing cataracts. the subpowers of any given mutation were always even more fun to learn about than their basis. “ i get it. i learned about a decade ago that being able to breathe fire isn’t exactly the party trick i thought it would be. ” oh, college days !

the sanctum place ? it took levi a moment to comb through his memory, but he landed on it ! “ the sanct -- no, no. ” nothing against them ! he was sure they were fine people ! he just... was not with them. “ my family -- we’ve just been mutant after mutant for generations. charlotte would be the first person the gene skipped over in... i don’t know how long. ”

“I think if Bruce mauled Dory and Marlin, there would no longer be a Disney company. Sid from Toy Story is terrifying enough…” Carina had always been frightened of him as a child. He reminded her of a boy from the pre-school she went to. He put a worm in her hair once, and she’d screamed so loudly that it echoed off walls for miles. That was her last day there. Her parents pulled her out, deciding it was better to hire help and keep her at home until her mutation was under control. She’s glad Charlotte doesn’t have to go through that. Having divorced parents is traumatising enough for her.

She glances at Levi, rubbing the back of her neck awkwardly. “You’ve got it.” The cat in her arms soothes her nerves a little, but not enough for her to relax her muscles. Her shoulders feel painfully tense. Levi would never, ever lay a finger on her, so she doesn’t understand why being in close proximity to him makes her feel so… fragile. Her confidence is usually unmatched, but not in a cocky and unpleasant way. She supposes that she’s always been a bit shy around him, though. When they first met, it was because she had a crush on him. It took her a few weeks to really come out of her shell and show him who she truly is. Now, she can’t think of anything worse than him knowing her like the back of his hand. It’s not a feeling of shyness anymore; it’s anxiety causing the flutters in her stomach. She’d give anything for it to be the former again.

Carina lets Seb jump to the ground, watching him scurry away to her bedroom. He’ll be making himself a blanket nest on her bed, no doubt. Taking a bottle of water from the fridge, she uses the moment alone to take some deep breaths and remind herself that everything is okay. She’s safe. “Here you go,” she says, holding the bottle up. Levi seems very interested in her fish, and she’s not sure if he’s trying to distract himself like she is, or if he’s really admiring them. “Sorry that it’s in a Mickey Mouse bottle. Lot— Charlotte picked them.”

“ i think we could really trace it all back to the, uh... ” - what was her name ? oh, yeah ! - “ maleficent. her dragon form would’ve been enough to traumatize kids for years. ” then again, if they’d followed the real formula of sleeping beauty -- the brothers grimm version -- disney would’ve been out as quickly as it got in. thinking back on it... between sid, as carina had mentioned, and characters like claude frollo, horned king, ursula... they had a good roster of pretty terrifying villains. maybe it was for the best that charlotte wasn’t too much of a disney kid...

“ thank you, ” levi said with a nod as he took the water bottle. a subtle smile grew as carina explained the backstory of the bottle -- of course she did. he would’ve expected nothing less ! “ it’s alright -- i like it. it’s very... ” holding it out and twirling it around, he continued, “ sweet. ” a definite departure from the disney villains levi had just been thinking about. he would never be one of those parents who didn’t let their child watch a movie because it contained a slightly scary villain ( those had always been his favorite ones ! ), but the purity of mickey mouse provided a fine contrast to the mental image of bruce mauling dory and marlin.

glancing at his watch, as subtly as he could, he hoped and prayed charlotte would be getting home from school soon. there was only so much he could talk about with carina nowadays -- so much that wouldn’t trudge up something from the past or further exacerbate something in the future. the love was not lost -- as long as she was charlotte’s mother, and as long as she was a good one, at that ( he couldn’t picture her ever not being a good one ), it never could be. but the divorce had skewed his perception. when he looked at her now, he did not see a woman he had chosen to keep a secret from out of fear -- no, he saw a woman who... quite frankly, looked like she fit all the bills a judge would want to see. he could accept that he didn’t deserve full custody, and he could even accept that he didn’t deserve half-and-half -- it all went back to the bottle. but he could never accept that he didn’t deserve partial in any way, shape, or form. he didn’t even know if he should’ve considered his suspicions ‘suspicions.’

January’s patience grows thinner and thinner, almost as thin as the pursing of her own blood-red lips. “Get a hold of yourself—try and do that before asking about anything else.” She wants to slap him back to his senses, and with the nice rings that she has on, it would draw an ample amount of blood. Not enough for the worry, but enough to tithe her over, like a good older sister would. God damn him—there’s only room for one wreck in this family, and January is as bad a wreck when she gets; she can’t handle her little brother spiraling too.

Her pointer and her middle rub at her temple patiently trying to excoriate the feelings of anguish and empathy from her chest. A crime boss is a crime boss is a crime boss. Even if she had to think about mutants and her family, none of it should jeopardize all that she’d built. Especially with the new half-suicidal bent that her brother had seemed to pick up.

“I don’t have the answers,” she says, admitting even a little defeat. The words are calm, but decisive. “All I know is you need to calm down before you go back home.” A pause, then a critical eye leveled at Levi. He wouldn’t— “You do plan on going back to your wife and child and explaining yourself, right?”

levi didn’t often rely on logic, and just logic, to make any decisions. he fell a bit more on his gut. but this ? this required some logic that, in his stupor, he did not possess. logically, he should be open with his wife and tell her what he was pretty damn sure he’d discovered about himself, right ? yes. but, logically, that would open her to the fact that he would outlive them which would ultimately cause nothing but hurt for all parties involved and great confusion for charlotte and drive her away from him, right ? yes. he didn’t know which way was up and which way was down ! “ i -- yeah, yes, of course i’m going home to them. ” ...preferably when he had sobered up a little, but he’d have to one way or another ! what he wouldn’t have to do ? what he could sit on for a while ? explaining himself in the fullest extent. “ she’ll know -- i mean, i’ll, y’know, i’ll tell her. ” but what would he tell her ? “ i don’t... the full thing just -- it needs.. it needs a couple, y’know... a couple nights. ”

scratching bones’s chest, he continued the rhyme that had become ingrained into his mind: “ third is the one with the hairy chest ! ” very fitting if they were always going to put one of levi’s furry friends in third place. “ that makes it you versus bones, ” he joked, amusing his own self greatly. then, looking to bones again, as if having a silent discussion with his own buddy... who ruined the scene when he flopped down. he was not a classically trained actor... “ you know what ? i’ll do it. i’ll spot you. ” after all, simple drinks ! and veterinarians tended to make more than phlebotomists of any level. and he was a st. james.

Ah. The bent where Levi wanted to go out on his own—January empathizes, her emotions coolly detached well enough where her rage is simply bubbling up from her guts and she simply doesn’t do anything to deal with it. “First thing’s first anyway—” She hits hip upside the head, rings smacking into his skull. “You’re a moron. That’s for my niece—and I’d hit you again, but you’ve done a lot of that yourself.” Holding out her hand, a glass of bourbon appears as if it was already there, and she shoots it down her throat quickly.

“So what’s next? You run into traffic? Drink bleach? Get to the morgue?” Her voice is matter-of-fact, cold, her threaded eyebrows sharp enough to kill someone, though it seems it wouldn’t kill Levi of all people. “You want me to kill you, smartass? Because I think I could—but I fucking won’t, because your daughter and your wife need you.”

”You’re going to be there, and it’s going to hurt. But you get over it. You focus on what matters, and when it hurts, you come to me,” she says, a critical eye on her brother, now in shambles at the prospect of immortality. “You don’t go to a fucking bar. You don’t take it out on people. Christ, you don’t run into oncoming traffic. You tell people, not this weird macho bullshit.”

in levi’s... ‘slight’ stupor, it took him far longer than it should have to realize what it sounded like. he was being smacked upside the head ! he knew he fell off the wagon and deserved it, but why the delayed reaction ? sheesh ! “ drink ble- ? ” - the dots had finally connected. she thought he had actively tried to jump from a skyscraper ! “ no ! no, no, no, no ! no ! no, i wouldn’t -- no ! carina and charlotte -- no, i wouldn’t ! ” he replied hastily, shaking his head with great fervor... just to provide an extra silent ‘no!’ “ it was -- someone got... someone got literally in my head. but that’s -- that’s not important right now ! ” yeah, ihsan. go be a little bitch elsewhere !

of course, the second round of running into oncoming traffic had been voluntary. completely voluntary ! if he hadn’t died after the fall... if he hadn’t died after getting run over on the street following the fall... in his clouded mind, it only made sense that running into oncoming traffic would make for a fine final test ! if he lived, goddammit ! if he died, hooray ! -- wait... if he lived, hooray ! if he died, goddammit ! ... damned if you do, damned if you don’t ! “ what’s -- what’s important... shit, jan -- nothing... good can come from it ! ” still trying to wrap his own mind around it, now even more clouded than it had been when he ran into oncoming traffic... none of it made sense. “ what do i -- like, like, what do i do next ? what... what the fuck do i do next ? ”

( though he didn’t tend to be particularly vainglorious about it -- all for the fun of the game ! ) levi hummed in feigned deep thought about this proposal, going full throttle with his hand against his chin. looking down to bones, he asked the dog, “ what do you think ? is it worth it ? ” a nod and a shrug, as if bones had just said something he only kind of agreed with, he looked back to raul and replied, “ we agree to these terms. ”

A hand to his forehead, he almost faints from mock surprise. Quelle suprise! Let it not be so! Will gasps out and almost falls to his knees in sadness. “Damn! Can’t you at least pay me better than my job right now, Levi?” His tone is a joke, though he tries his best plea—all drama and wet eyes and more drama than his body can handle. A hand on his shoulder, almost going to his knees. “Come on my guy! Don’t do me like the Cask of Amontillado!”

steepling, demeanor now modeled after the one and only montgomery burns, he nodded his head from side to side with narrowed eyes. “ i can make good on $8 a batch, no more, no less. ” which, with ~$8 being the minimum wage in the city of chicago, was the opposite of a steal for will ! “ i will only trap you within those gingerbread walls if you disagree to my terms and conditions, william. ”

The guy was nice. Hell, he hadn’t held out hope for nice, but there it was, plain as day. It wasn’t even a ploy for anything other than an autograph. It helped that the man was a dad, and a little easy on the eyes, so he shakes his head and gives him a small smile at the corner of his mouth; at least some people still liked him. Mutants for mutants, or so the saying goes.

“Nah, don’t sweat it, firebeard. I just tried to run from paps and they forgot that I do light shows, and they didn’t wear sunglasses before harrassing me.” The video was on a ton of entertainment outlets, a bright flash of light that was just barely a flashbang and he was off, a streak of glowing light through the night sky. At the mention of the song that he played over and over, there was some genuine pride there. It was shitty pop, but it was an actual foray into shitty pop—one of his only times trying before giving up and losing hope.

He signs the receipt, his old signature and penmanship rusty, but still passable. To my sweetest and cutest fan, Charlotte! Shine bright and shine hard! - V. It was cheesy and stupid, but it was one of his better ones, and so he took some time to at least do it well enough. “So,” he says, giving the pen back. “What’s your kid like, if I can ask. She a mutant too?”

oh, thank the heavens ! victor’s demeanor changing to something far more approachable and far friendlier was certainly a relief. he no longer had to worry about one of charlotte’s favorite singers actually being a jerk, and he no longer had to worry about bothering him -- at least, not as much. he was still sure a celebrity wasn’t keen on having too much of their time taken up by a fan ( or the father of a fan ), but the sudden friendliness that victor emitted... was definitely a relief.

“ ah, so that’s why... ? ” if he were a different man, he may have felt like somewhat of a dick for basically saying ‘so your life was ruined because of your mutation?’ -- and victor didn’t know levi’s story, so maybe he’d look at the guy as such ! -- but the fact of the matter was that levi’s life had also been ruined because of his mutation ! that was how the story had to go, right ? your life would be forever affected in one way or another -- forever affected in a way no human could comprehend. sometimes, it was nice ; other times, it was shitty as ever. “ thank you so much, ” he said, taking the receipt back with a wide smile. he’d have to read it to her, of course -- he knew she could read some of those words, but ‘gh’ was still ‘g’ and ‘sh’ was ‘suh-heh’ -- typical childhood trouble. but she’d adore it ! and he adored it ! folding it up and placing it carefully in his wallet, perhaps he shined just as bright as the cinders that made up his beard. “ we’re not sure yet -- she hasn’t reached the usual ‘mutation age’ yet, and she wasn’t born with any physical differences. but both me and her mom are, and the gene’s strong on my side of the family, so i think there’s a good likelihood that she’ll develop one. ”

There’s a moment when she debates whether or not she’s going to give Levi a drink, and puts the thought away for later—giving her little brother a glass of wine when he’s off his rocker isn’t going to get her points. Especially if it lands him a stint in rehab. Or worse, a mandatory portal back home. So she tries to put on her face of concern and pats his shoulder, trying to be a good big sister and alleviate some of the despair that’s on his platter right now.

At the confession, January raises an eyebrow. There’s a thought to share the probability of her own immortality, the thought that for all her power, it would keep her in an eternal cycle of living and dying, but it just seems a little too much. All that’s left is a solemn sigh. “That’s rough, kid,” she says, giving him a sad smile. She’s too cold for this, too instrumental to death to be disturbed by the possibility of dying or killing. “Did you—” A question at the tip of her tongue, before he furrows her brow.

“Wait.” January says, a little more steel in her voice. Did Carina—no, she was nice. Hell, she was better than January sometimes. Sometimes. “Slow down. Take a fucking breath and tell me what happened to you. I need the whole picture, short stack.”

levi knew not to go to january for emotional support, so to speak. he knew that his sister was not the best at dealing with emotions, much less the emotions of others, but he needed someone familiar. he needed someone he loved. he needed someone he didn’t think would be too quick to judge. and he needed someone he considered wise. and january just happened to fit the bill to a T. he didn’t need someone to regulate his emotions for him, to pat him on the back. he’d gotten enough of that at the bar. what he needed now ? that was different. “ i don’t... ” with a prolonged sigh, shoulders lowering and lowering and lowering as the exhale grew longer, he held up a hand. slamming his left index finger against his right: “ skyscraper. ” slamming his left index finger against his right middle: “ car. ” slamming his left index finger against his right ring: “ truck. ”

by all known laws of general existence, he should’ve been dead after that first one ! or at least brutally maimed. but he lived for the next... and lived through that for the next... “ it’s not like i, like i - ” - have a way to really confirm it - “ - but, i don’t... it’s like... i’m just -- i’m gonna fucking be there ! ”

Carina shakes her head, an amused smile on her face. “Not that I’ve noticed. I think they quite like it in there. Plenty of space to swim, plants, ornaments, good fish food. Better than being in the ocean with predators after you.” She makes sure she makes no eye contact with Levi when she says the word ‘predator’. The last thing they need is him assuming she thinks he’s one for what occurred towards the end of their marriage. Every time she’s around him, she has to think over what she’s going to say before saying it. He never used to take offense to the things she said, but since the court hearing… Well, now things are different.

“Nope. She has toys and craft stuff at your place; she’s all set.” Carina knows he’ll have a large stockpile of the foods and snacks Charlotte loves, so she doesn’t need to worry about that. He might’ve been a shitty husband, but he wasn’t a shitty father. Their daughter always comes first for the both of them. Even when Levi would rather down a bottle of Bourbon than come to bed with his wife, Charlotte still had his attention. It was strange how quickly things changed between them. One week they were fine and in love, and the next, Levi had decided he wanted to become an alcoholic. She’ll never understand why he chose booze over her, but she’s too proud to ask him. Hell, she’d asked in the past and never got a clear answer. Perhaps she simply wasn’t enough for him.

Moving to the kitchen, Carina takes some deep breaths to try and clear her thoughts. Thinking about the past too much while Levi is around is dangerous. She might start softening towards him, which he doesn’t deserve. Not after trapping her. “Do you want a drink? I have coffee, tea, soda, water, juice…” There’s also a couple of bottles of wine from Italy in the refrigerator, but she knows better than to offer him that. She’d never encourage him to start drinking again. Sebastião appears from another room, tail brushing against Carina’s legs. Smiling, she crouches down to scoop him up and pet him. “Hi, bebé,” she coos, scratching behind his ear.

“ they’re some smart fishes, then, ” levi replied with an amused grin. eyes fixed on them, he nodded his head to the side and added, “ i think pixar took a few artistic liberties with bruce, y’know ? fish are friends, and all. ” when it came down to it, a shark had to eat what a shark had to eat ! quite kind of pixar to not make the shark a villain ( rather... if anyone was the villain, it was the humans ), but he did hope every child would eventually learn that sharks do, indeed, eat fish -- and that’s just because it’s what they’ve gotta eat !

“ a water would be great, thank you. ” ha. this was sorely reminiscent of better days -- days where one of them would ask if the other wanted something while they were in the kitchen, and maybe the other would and maybe the other wouldn’t, and then they’d convene on the couch together. they would watch a movie. they would laugh at the jokes. they would eventually be having a whole conversation while the movie just played as background noise. and wasn’t it a shame that all good things came to an end ? wasn’t it a shame that the question was now only posed out of common courtesy ? how far they’d strayed. still waiting for charlotte to arrive, trying to avoid any oversteps in the meantime, levi chose to distract himself with the fishes as carina’s little cat walked into the kitchen to distract her. they were beautiful. they really were. it was impressive that carina was able to keep up with them as well as she was with the traveling nature of her career. it had never once been something he thought looked easy. it was always something he had admired about her. it was something she enjoyed, it was something she was good at, and she pursued it, despite all the protests even he recalled. history was a dangerous thing.

Kamelya understands how dependant someone can become on alcohol. Before you know it, you’re at the very bottom of a deep, dark pit, and have no way of climbing out. Luckily for her, she hadn’t needed any intervention. Her husband divorcing her was enough to make her cut down on how much she drank. “I understand, Levi. But under the influence of alcohol, you’re much more likely to make rash decisions and act out. The courts take that into consideration while making their choice. Violence or no violence, it all boils down to who has the clearer mind and will make the best decisions for Charlotte. I’m not saying you’re a bad father, so please don’t take it that way. I’m telling you how it is from the courts perspective.”

Kamelya nods, jotting down notes. She smiles politely when he mentions the grilled cheeses. Glancing up from her notepad, she purses her lips and tries to think of some advice she can give him when it comes to his relationship with his ex-wife. “How often are you around each other without your daughter there? Perhaps you and Carina should have an open and honest conversation to clear the air. You can both ask questions you need answers to. It could provide some closure. If you’re worried things could become heated, do it with a therapist or someone impartial present.”

levi couldn’t say he was a stranger to making rash decisions while drunk. usually a pretty steady and predictable man, it could go sideways at the drop of a hat if he were under the influence. no, he had never been violent. no, he had never had an affair. but he’d, say, hit a stop sign and drove away. “ i know. i mean, i know that’s part of it -- and i know that that should be part of it. it’s just... i’d had a great track record outside of that. i was one year sober when the ruling was made, i’d still think that’d at least buy me a day or two. i mean, hell, i’d take visitations and just one day every other week over... just seeing her for a couple hours a week. ” readjusting his toboggan, tugging it down ever-so slightly, he let out a hefty sigh. “ i’m just gonna miss so many milestones like this and -- y’know, what if she grows up just... looking at me like like she’d look at an uncle ? sure, it’s better than nothing, but... i don’t know, y’know ? ”

with a light laugh, landing somewhere between scorned and pleasant, he replied, “ almost never. my last visit was the first time we were alone for more than five minutes in the past... months. ” had it been that entire year ? it was possible. how else had they managed to stay pleasant enough around each other, after all ? “ it didn’t get to blows or anything, but... i mean, it wasn’t pleasant for me, and it didn’t seem pleasant for her. ” you would’ve thought they’d never been in love ! perhaps it was the fault of that love. “ that’s something i’m willing to have, something i’d like to have, but she was so convinced that i had something to do with how we stayed together, i wouldn’t know how to sway her ! ” the fire of his eyebrows, the cinders on his beard, flicked lighter -- flicked higher... so he shut his eyes, took a few deep breaths, and dared to continue. “ that... i know that the, y’know, drinking was a big factor in her filing, and i get it. ” -- now. now he got it. “ but i think that -- the ‘how’ -- is the root of why all the love and the trust feels... lost. ”

“It would seem so.” Sebastião is the cat version of Charlotte – hyperactive, cuddly, hisses at you when you try to give him a bath and he’s busy. He’s pathetically Carina’s best friend, though. People say dogs are the best companions, but they’re wrong. No animal can humble you quite like a cat, and she respects that. “He doesn’t do it for long, he knows what me saying no means, unlike our daughter.” The last statement is said with a smile; however, it is irritating when your four-year-old won’t take no for an answer in the middle of Walmart, and is screaming her way down the toy aisle. But hey, nobody said parenting is easy.

Carina nods when he thanks her. She has nothing to say in response. It would be polite to say ‘you’re welcome’, but she’s not feeling very amicable right now. When she looks at Levi, it’s almost impossible to believe that they’d been happy once. It feels like a lifetime ago, when he was a completely different person. She was a miserable law student who spoke broken English, he was a veterinary student who exuded warmth and kindness. Somehow they fit together perfectly and brought out the best in each other. Now, they only bring out the worst. It hurts to think of it this way, but it’s the truth, and you can’t hide from the truth no matter how hard you try.

“Great.” She walks over to the laundry basket next to the couch, pulling out Charlotte’s favourite, hooded, Bluey bath towel. It’s freshly washed and ready for bath time. “Here,” she mumbles, passing it to Levi. “She’s refusing to bathe without it. I got an identical one this morning, so you can keep that one. It’s important she has the things she loves at both homes, so.” Carina can only imagine the meltdown Levi would have to deal with if she didn’t have her favourite towel at his place; she’s a little bit bratty, like her mother. If Carina were a malicious person, she would’ve let him deal with it. She won’t do anything that could upset Charlotte, though.

how could levi ever suppress a jolly, short laugh when carina compared their daughter to her cat, thus inadvertently comparing her to darla ? it was a laugh in good faith, of course. it was endearing. “ the fishes haven’t tried to escape yet, though ? haven’t clogged their filter ? ” -- if he felt like being petty, he would tell carina that, if he could have charlotte for a week or two, he’d be able to teach her not to tap on fishtanks ( because he was confident he would be able to -- he had to deal with enough of that at the office with kids he didn’t even know who, for one reason or another, he saw more often than others ). but if there was one final thing levi was sure they could agree on, it was that they would not use charlotte in any way -- even just for making a petty joke or comment.

met with a polite nod, but no further words, there was a time levi would’ve asked if something was wrong. a time he would’ve asked if carina was alright, if she needed anything, if she just needed to be left alone for the moment. if she needed him to get her something, if she needed him to take bones out of the room, if she needed him to bring bones into the room. if she needed him to take charlotte for the moment, if she needed to see charlotte. but that care they had once shared for each other had long since flown away. it could be worse. they could always be at each others’ throats, unrelenting, even in front of charlotte. but they knew that they had to be amicable if they wanted this arrangement to work out. and he didn’t think himself quick to anger, nor did he think carina the same. if nothing else, they could say that much. taking the bath towel with a nod of gratitude, deciding it best to let her tell him why she had given him this specific towel before saying anything. ( he had heard of the controversies surrounding bluey. the first one he’d heard of didn’t faze him -- something about gas ? but the second one -- he hadn’t fully understood it at first, but after reading what some older australians had to say about it... this was the bullshit she had their daughter watching ? -- be civil. don’t let a kid’s show, of all things, become a wedge. ) “ alright, got it. thanks. ” he would be putting on some scooby-doo. “ anything else she’ll need ? ”

“as long as you won’t stop me,” he teases, nudging back at levi. he’s not quite a match for his speed or power, but he’s not exactly being left in the dust, either! any competition is all in good fun—it’s just the ability to get out and get moving that’s the real prize. “you wouldn’t dare,” he scoffs, faux offense in his expression. “she deserves them more than i do!” for good work, no less. all he’s doing is keeping up with his cardio.
