He’d rubbed off on her. Always waiting for that goodbye or ‘until we meet again’. Lingering in the air. She’d been a condition. It lingered in the back of her mind, like always in everything she did. The knock makes her jump but it’s unmistakably him. No one else feels the same against her mind. It’s hard to distinguish the source against the storm, but she doesn’t hesitate to look in any way. Door open between them she looks at the duffle and then him. Heart constricting, jaw tightening in preparation of all the bad news she’s come to expect. Only it doesn’t come. Her brow scrunches for a moment digesting whats been asked.

She brushes the hair from her shoulder. The word always is there but she swallows it back opting for a smug smile like she knew what he’d ask. “When do we leave?”

This conversation has run through his head a few dozen times on the way over. Arguments, counterarguments, compromises, as if it was a debate to win. So it takes a moment to take in the smile, the immediate acceptance. Fingers dig into the wooden frame. A beat passes and all he can think to say is "- I had a whole speech." Then he's sighing and reaching for her, lips pressing against hers. There were doubts. He always had doubts, a bottomless pit of them. But this was his greatest. She's the one person he could never prepare for and the one person he couldn't live without. Aching relief floods through him in waves and he pours it into the kiss. If she had said anything else, he doesn't know what he would have done. "Tonight. As soon as you can pack a bag. Let's just go. It's what we've always wanted and I'm not waiting anymore."

The knocks land on her door sharp and clipped, unmistakeabe. He waits on the other side, duffle on the floor, hands clenched around the door frame. In the past he'd just left. Barely a word of goodbye before he was out the door, only a dust trail as he sped away. Always a slave to the mission, to his own demanding instincts. But he has different priorities. He looks up when the door cracks open. His mind is a storm of activity that he knows she can feel so he keeps it simple.  "I’m leaving ShieldU. Come with me."

I know, I know. Avengers vs. X-Men was a really, really serious comic. But when Magento said to Charles that “It doesn’t seem so long ago that it was impossible not to think of them as just children…and ours at that.”

And Charles answers: “I still do.” 

Then, many pages later, Charles asks for help of Charles adding: “Scott and Emma…they are losing control.” 

And all I could think was ‘Look at the overwhelmed parents trying to discipline their unruly children.’ So, this fan art was born.

this! by far! it’s one of the few times we get to see how scott’s mind works. every time we get a glimpse into the intricate mindscape he’s created for himself… it’s wonderful. scott is stronger than the void, a force that has driven others literally insane. it really puts into perspective how much the phoenix force burned him in the end.
