In the last moments of my life I wasn't thinking about the pain but rather how I would get to be with Tessa again. I didn't know the exact moment I took my last breath but as soon as I did, it was like I was lifted out of my own body and put into a new one. There was no more pain, no more injuries. Everything was fixed; I was brand new. In my new body I looked down at my old one with a frown. My whole face was smashed in and covered in blood, making me barely recognizable. The only thing was that my previous hatred for Delilah had somehow disappeared. Even if going home was a goal of mine, she gave me the chance to be where I really wanted to be and for that I could let go of the anger that once fueled me.
"You did good, Mystery Boy," an all too familiar voice said from behind me. I whipped around, desperate to see her again. A smile immediately spread across my lips as she stood smiling at me. Without wasting any time, I quickly made my way to her and wrapped my arms around her whole body to pull her close. I lifted her in the air a bit, spinning her around with a laugh before I let her go to kiss her. The feel of her warm lips against mine again was something I would never get tired of. It was crazy to think it had only been this morning that she had died. The time without her seemed to drag on and it felt like it had been days when it had in fact been only hours. But that didn't matter now because we were together again.
"I'm so sorry, Tess," I whispered as I pressed my forehead against hers with my eyes closed. Her hand found my mine to intertwine our fingers together.
"Shh, you have nothing to apologize for," she assured me, knowing exactly what I was trying to say sorry for. I nodded my head, not even wanting to begin arguing about it. It was over now so we could just move on and forget all of the pain.
"I missed you," I told her. It hadn't been long since I last saw her but I still did miss her. After being around her so often it felt unnatural to be alone. It just made me feel thankful to be able to hold her in my arms again.
"I missed you too," she said softly, giving my hand a squeeze. I kissed her forehead before backing up to look at her. She looked absolutely beautiful and I couldn't help but smile. "What?" She asked innocently.
"You know what," I replied with a laugh. She shook her head with a smile but her cheeks turned a light shade of pink too. "Do you still love me, Freckles?" I asked, my tone a little teasing. She let out a laugh as she rolled her eyes.
"What do you think?" She answered, putting one hand on her hip. I smiled as I wrapped my arm around her waist to pull her body into mine.
"I think it's impossible not to love me," I joked as I smiled down at her. Her blue eyes found mine, seeming even brighter than ever.
"I think so too," she teased with a smile before she leaned up to kiss me. After only a few seconds, I heard someone clearing their throat, obviously in attempt to gain our attention. My eyes lifted off of Tessa to find Tatum standing with a smirk on her lips.
"You lovebirds done over there?" She teased, which made me laugh a bit. I glanced down at Tessa who was just smiling back at me. I reluctantly let go of her before walking over to her sister. The last time I saw her was three years ago and it wasn't a good time for either of us. But now you could see just how much happier both of us were, and it made me want to forget everything that happened in the past. I pulled her in for a hug, feeling it was the only thing I could do.
"Remind me to never make promises to you again," I said, smiling as I felt her laugh a bit. She gave me a tight squeeze before backing out.
"Thanks, Sutter," she said quietly. I frowned, not wanting to be thanked for what I had done. She must have noticed this because she smiled, shaking her head. "I meant thanks for being there for Tessa. Thanks for showing her she still had someone who loves her." I looked over my shoulder to find Tessa smiling at me, aware that she was expecting this conversation to happen. She had saved me just as much I had saved her but I don't think there was ever a way I could even begin explaining that.
"She had someone who always loved her way before I came along... you," I replied. Tatum smiled but didn't say anything more, which was perfectly okay with me. We both knew how much Tessa meant to the both of us and I could see that would make everything better between us. Tessa made her way over to us, raising a hand to place on my shoulder.
"There's someone else who was waiting to see you," she told me as she pressed a quick kiss to my cheek. The first person that popped into my mind was Callan. It was just out of pure instinct, mostly because I wouldn't be surprised if he had killed himself from this. I turned around in expectation to see my brother staring back at me, but instead I saw Imogene. A smile immediately crept onto my lips as I rolled my eyes. She laughed, walking over to wrap her arms around me.
"Miss me, princess?" I teased, pulling her in for a tight squeeze. She must have been one of the cannons fired during the pre-Finale because I hadn't seen her face in the sky before that and she wasn't at the Finale either. I was glad I hadn't seen who killed her or how she died though because none of that would matter now.
"How could I not miss the knight in shining armor?" She joked back. I ruffled her hair a bit, which only made her roll her eyes and pout. She ruffled my hair back with a laugh before backing out of the hug. "You did good," she told me with a playful shove. At first I thought she meant in the arena but once she looked over at Tessa with a smile, I figured it out and couldn't help but blush a bit. All three girls laughed, which made my cheeks burn even more.
"Is that a blush on Sutter Galbraith's face?" Imogene teased, winking over at Tessa. Tessa smiled back at Imogene and Tatum before slipping her hand into mine. I shook my head as I rolled my eyes at the three of them.
"It's okay. It's cute," Tessa whispered, pressing a soft kiss to my cheek. I squeezed her hand, giving her a quick smile before sticking my tongue out at Imogene and Tatum. The two rolled their eyes with smiles, obviously enjoying all of this just as much as I was. Here there was nothing to worry about. There was no Capitol, no Games. Just love and happiness. It was a lot better than what I expected it to be but it seemed this was just the beginning. "Are you ready to go?" Tessa asked. I gave her a confused look, not understanding what she meant by going. I thought we were already gone. Seeing my confusion, she pointed to a bright white light that suddenly appeared out of nowhere. My eyes remained glued on it for a few seconds before I looked back at the three blondes. Tatum nudged Imogene a bit, motioning for them to walk ahead. The girls smiled at me once more before walking towards the light as if they had done it a million times already. I looked over at Tessa, giving her hand a squeeze as I pulled her close to me.
"I'll go wherever you go," I said undoubtedly. She smiled as she squeezed my hand back. We began walking towards the light, hand in hand like it was supposed to be.
"I love you," she whispered, the sound of the words making my whole body fill with happiness. Finally we would be able to have our happily ever after, the one we always talked about having and never thought would be possible. But yet, here we were and it was more possible than ever before.
"I love you too," I said back, right as we were stepping into the light. "Forever."
With that we say goodbye to three tributes who put up an amazing fight for the finale. We thank each and every one of you for putting all of your hard work into making three tributes that we loved to read. We hope to see you in APOG19 and perhaps as a victor?
