‘You can’t do this’, ‘You can’t do that’, ‘You’ll never be able to do that’, ‘Stop being so stupid’, ‘Come to your senses already’, ‘You’re not suited to that’.
In all her 23 years, Florence had heard all too often that she couldn’t do things. It often left her disheartened and demotivated, but more often than that, it would bring about a certain stubborn determination which could lead her to do some rather silly things, despite being an intelligent, well-educated woman.
She was balanced now on the very tips of her toes, one hand clasped firmly to the edge of the bookshelf while her other hand attempted to grab a much needed book (why this particular one was up so high, she wasn’t sure, but it fueled her rare frustration).
Her side and arm, stretched and straining, demanded she give up on her mission to retrieve the book, but Florence persisted. Even standing atop a chair, her fingers barely brushed the spine of what she wanted.
“Almost...I can...I can get it!”
The words were a promise to the visiting woman, but after several more moments of trying to reach (and after a scare when the chair began to tip over), Florence had to admit defeat.
Head down, she settled back on the chair and stepped off it, inwardly relieved to be at her usual height once more. She smoothed out her skirt and blouse, a touch of pink to her cheeks now that she considered how very unladylike she had been in the past moments.
“My apologies, Miss Schinaia...I would hate to trouble you, but I would be very grateful if you could reach that book for me...I think you would find if very interesting. I’d intended to have it ready for you when you came over...”
