When I think about Code Geass I’m like “I hope one day I can love you again, but it’s not going to be today.”
This post isn’t meant to be me trying to convince anyone to like Nina or excuse any of her actions, but I’m just going to state my observations of something I’ve noticed on twitter, which obviously doesn’t account for everyone and isn’t all encompassing, but of what I have seen there is SUCH a difference between how Japanese Code Geass fans talk about Nina compared to everyone else I’ve seen online over the years. When she returned in Recapture, the reaction from Japanese fans that I saw on twitter were all like “Welcome back Nina! She has matured and grown, congratulations!” meanwhile all the English qrts were like “stupid table fucking bitch, who’s decision was it to bring her back?” Today she was implemented into Lost Stories and there was not a single negative qrt. It was all excitement that she was finally being put in the game. Going to quote one person directly. “Nina has become strong and beautiful, but the harshness of the path facing science while protecting her heart is still reflected in her expression even after the war. I earnestly hope she will be freed regarding the recapture.” It gives me whiplash a little bit. I don’t know why this is. It seems a little ironic. But it is refreshing to see nice things said about her for once.
Not one but TWO official arts of Nina for her birthday was not on my 2025 bingo but I am SO happy!!!
Masked Men's History, Naked Memory original photo memorial shared memories -- Zero and Lelouch: Student Council Album -- (writer: 加納 新太 | Kanou Arata)
G: Hey, President Rivalz. …oh, what’s that? K: It’s an album of Lelouch’s and Zero’s photos. R: Kallen told us before, didn’t she. About Zero and…Lelouch. G: Oh, yeah… R: About the hero Zero, and the Emperor Lelouch, and the Lelouch we knew. R: But to us they’re intertwined. So I thought that maybe you guys would think it’s a bad idea to collect these pictures in the one place. G: I see…I’m actually a little interested myself. K: See, it’s fine so show us already! G: Okay, okay. Shall we look at them one by one – ?
G = Gino; K = Kallen; R = Rivalz. Info + translations under the cut.

I love how Nina is the smartest character in Code Geass while simultaneously being really ignorant and stupid. Goes to show how brainwashing and cultural teachings can rewire you. I feel trauma may play much more of a role in this part of her though but that also holds true to how it can change your worldview. Although I think it was whatever happened to her + brainwashing that caused her to be so scared. Not just that, but also how mental illness makes logic go out the window completely. Like obviously a bomb detonating would kill a lot of people but she was tunnel visioned. Her obsessive hatred had her only focused on Zero and nothing else. The consequences only hit her afterwards, because she had gone completely mad.
This scene is memorable...except this time, we are part of it!

Shirley has died. She shot herself. I realize you are busy with work, but...
Please - answer phone, Nina
And when you wake up next to him in the middle of the night with your head in your hands, you're nothing more than his wife
And when you think about me, all of those years ago
You're standing face to face with I told you so
"It’s time to get up, little prince."
Gonna go on a little rant here. Something I have noticed is that Nina seems to be held to a really different standard than other characters in Code Geass who have been racist. Racism comes in different forms, and in no form is it ever okay. Do not continue to read this post thinking that I am saying that anything racist that has been done or said by any character in Code Geass is okay. I am just pointing out that Nina seems to get the most criticism while other characters are excused. Many of the Britannian characters have done or said racist things at some point in the series, including most of the student council such as Rivalz, who makes a comment about how Japanese people are not as smart as Britannians. Even Lelouch (who by the way really does kinda weaponize the suffering of the Japanese people to seek out personal revenge on Britannia) makes a really gross and distasteful comment about the genocide of the Japanese people, and we all know how that ends. There are many examples, but my favorite is Cornelia, who is straight up genocidal towards Japanese people. There is a scene where she massacres them in her knightmare and refers to them as vermin. Throughout the series, she continues to exhibit this behavior, and I never see any criticism or even hatred for her. When you compare Cornelia and her genocidal hatred of Japanese people to Nina who is scared of them... this is where I lose the fandom. I have seen many people mistake Nina for being genocidal, but it is evident (and has now been confirmed in Recapture) that her motivations for making FLEIJA were based on knowledge, as well as continued manipulation though Schneizel. During the scene where she wants it fired, she states very clearly that it is to kill Zero, not to kill innocent citizens. I could make a separate post about this misunderstanding, but let me get back on track. Nina occasionally makes very inappropriate comments that come from the propaganda she has been fed by Britannian society, which has warped her view of the world, but she does not hate anyone, the only people she truly hates is herself and Zero. Furthermore, Nina comes to understand everywhere she was wrong, and works to change herself. She helps Lelouch with the Zero Requiem. Even in Recapture, we see her directly fighting against Britannian colonialism. I don't recall Cornelia at any point in R2 ever showing any significant change. The closest she got to that was “hey Schneizel, nuking the entire world is bad!” Which is like yea... it sure is, Cornelia. I really do not understand what it is that separates Nina from these other characters, especially those who have done worse in this aspect. You will recall at the beginning that I said that racism comes in different forms and that it is never excusable, and that is true. What I am saying is that I wish other racist characters were held to the same standard as Nina when we are criticizing them. Nina is my favorite character, and I am not above criticizing her. Liking a character means that you should be able to admit where they are flawed and wrong. This also isn't me saying that anyone has to like Nina, Cornelia, or any character that did something racist that understandably left a sour taste in their mouth. What I am saying is that rather we like or dislike a character, we should still be able to discuss them critically, especially for a story like Code Geass with so many complex issues at hand.
Thinking about the tears that Nina shed over Shirley. She was so caught up in her work that she has neglected talking to her friends. To say that she didn't care about any of her friends is a lie. I also like how she was able to admit that she was jealous of what a happy person Shirley was. She was so unwell I really wish Schneizel did not get a hold of her.
Milly is such a lesbian coded character, forcing herself to pretend she is okay with marrying a man when she isn't and becoming very unhappy on the inside. To make it even better, Nina, who is canonically a lesbian, is the one who calls her out on her fake happiness and tells her to get a grip. So she listens and breaks off the marriage and pursues her own dreams. Even BETTER is Milly reflecting these thoughts back on Nina, hoping that Nina, also unhappy, will find her place in life too. I need them to get married NOW!
Kind of breaks my heart how she doesn't even consider Schneizel in this. He used her weak mental state and suffering from Euphemia's death to convince her to work on FLEIJA. He manipulated her. I've barely talked about this here and I probably will if I ever do a full Nina character analysis but I don't ever see anyone talk about this.
Needless to say, I feel extremely fortunate to see my extremely unpopular fav on screen again in 2024, and animated so beautifully too? Glad they continued her character where R2 left her off, on her path to work to undo wrongs of the past. She's an amazing person (Lelouch's words, not mine.)
After all, heart isn’t something you can control
