"Death does not come as a ferryman, and there is no river to be crossed."
a study on the fervent brightness of collapsing stars. the ruin left in the wake of their pursuit. the dust whispering their grandeur and their catastrophic fall. destruction as inevitable destiny. as hope, as freedom. to be ruined is to be transformed, is to be alive. it is the testament of what once was and what will come to be. oh to weep openly in loss, may the tears water the flowers blooming from it's wreckage. for death is just the beginning.

But Lohen hadn't attended mass, no, he rarely did for there was nothing to gain from the insecrity of kneeling before a god that hadn't answered him in the moment of â metallic heels make their way across the floor of the church, evening light cast through the stained glass windows to recreate hazy shapes blending in with his shifting shadow. It's not his usual setting, no, far too crowded. Not to mention the acoustics of it all. He probably couldn't even draw his dagger without someone's curiosity sending those far too gentle yet prying eyes towards his direction. A worthy challenge, he'll admit, but not one he favored in the moment he approached the deacon.
There's a change in the winds of Mondstadt, one that's set to carry a long expedition in the morning. The winds would not lead, only accompany, and before the early morning sun finds itself reflect on his vice captain crest there are matters to tend to.
Such as a smile offered the one who saw through the compliment. While it took Lohen a lot to give up in a fight, he found more leniance in the banter with Dahlia, here with two hands raising in defeat.
"Alright, alright â you caught me," shoulders raised, only for an arm to reach over to the back of one of the wooden seats. Leaning against it, head canted. "Neglecting religion once again, father I have sinned, yadda~yadda ... I'll give you ten praise Barbatos once I get back from the expedition, how about that? We're set to leave in the morning, but, knowing your big ears you've probably already managed to get your hands on the squads and their positions â"
Now that was a compliment, at least wrapped in some sort of strange jab, the one that â in their current distance â could only be served out loud in the light echoes of the quiet church. Lohen had never come here for blessings. He had come here for ...
" ... it'll be quiet without me here for a while, won't it ?"
... right, a weighing see you later.
He hears him before he sees him, the familiar sound of metal heels hitting marble brings a smile as he continues tending to the altar. Evening mass has passed and as the deacon he's often left behind to clean and prepare for the next morning. It's not at all a job he dreads, seeing as it's one of the few moments where he gets to be alone.
"How kind. What was your favorite verse?" He doesn't need to quiz him to know he hadn't been there at all. Lohen always makes it his mission to be impossible to ignore whenever he actually attends. Be it by the click of a heel, an overly pitched prayer or blatant call for Dahlia to interrupt the sermon to address him. Lohen has plenty of ways ensure Dahlia regrets ever having him over, and yet, the deacon himself continues to insist upon it.
The promises for ten praises are empty, he knows it. Yet the final comment catches him.
"My, you really must want to be baptized again before departure, don't you?" He quickly finishes putting out the candles before he finally looks over at the nave. And there he was, taking front row seat, lackadaisical as always, treating the prayer bench like any other chair. Well at least no sisters are around to witness it, so he won't need to scold him. " All units on leave have had their names added to the prayer list."
Taking a hold of his book of hymns he descends from the altar's stairs to come meet the knight.
"Including yours." He stands in front of the knight assessing him. Lohen never gives tell unless he wants to. Reckless bravery still guides him after all this time and Dahlia can't even begin to guess what may have driven him to join the expedition. But he can't stop him now, never could really. Nor would he. Lohen is a child of freedom, he should be allowed to follow his own wind. Dahlia just wishes maybe Mondstadt hadn't been so boring for the other to wish to leave. But Lohen is not like Dahlia, duty does not bind him.
His shoulders sag at the confession, a bittersweet smile forming before he can stop himself.
"It'll certainly be boring..." Yet it's quickly fixed, he should not have Lohen part felling down about his choice. "Downright tedious...who else is going to rescue cats on my behalf? There are no competent knights left save for Jean. You don't happen to know anything about that?"
He's not completely privy to how the selection went, but something tells him Lohen had his hand on it. After all, the fifth squad and their vice-captain hadn't been originally added to the prayer list. It's just like Lohen to seek danger before it finds him. Taking a seat beside the other, he sighs as he sags against the bench, looking over at the altar.
"...How long do you reckon it'll last?" The amber somber quietness of the cathedral is not at all daunting, neither are the colorful mosaics upon the floor. Like this, the cathedral feels the age it has, the pillars burn with the last of daylight, serving as their only light for the moment.
"I had instructions to have up to three years worth intercessory prayers, i'd like it to be shorter but one never knows when dealing with the Abyss." A lament, perhaps the only he actually expresses any doubt about the expedition at all. But one shouldn't weight down a departure, after all, they will see each other again. One way or another. Dahlia has to believe that, even if he has to ask Venti himself. He knows the god cannot do all, but certainly, from time to time, a little peek wouldn't hurt.
"It's still a really long time to wait for ten praises isn't it? Maybe you should do them now... Or better yet." Opening his book of hymns he fetches something that had been encased between the pages. It's a small memento, a cecilia pressed dried upon a card with the hymn of Das Favoniuslied. He knows Lohen does not care for any of the religious bouts, nor would he want a blessing, so maybe a song would serve him best. As a knight Lohen should carry with him something to remind him where to return to when the fight is over.
"You can praise whenever your squad sings this hymn, certainly that'll be a good excuse to not be around whenever they drink too much." Lohen's not one to like the tavern like Dahlia, that much he knows. It's hard to get the other to come with him for a drink so maybe an escape will serve him well when at camp.
"That way you can have it done in no time...Though I'll still request one last praise when you return. Just to be sure." A smile, like the bargain is not meant to force Lohen to return at all. "Far more manageable right?"
Dahlia's approach to godhod if far more familiar than most. while the majority hold a certain reverence or animosity towards the archons or other gods, Dahlia sees them as just another fickle, flawed being. and while yes, he still holds some esteem and veneration, ultimately he sees them as just another voice in the confession booth. for who would unburden such creatures? they who suffer to guide them? he's by no means above the archons, but a lending nonjudgmental ear does more for a god than centuries of silence. for not everything needs an answer but needs to be spoken. this at least he believes to be his role towards them specifically
this is in great part due to him being close to Venti and working around his nature. to have a god that's so close, that resembles them so, drinks, laughs, sings and grieves, it influenced his views into seeing them as just another human like them. even when they are not of the same nature. he knows the other archons are not like Venti at all but he also thinks that no matter what, deep down they'll still carry that human side to them because how are they meant to protect and guide something they cannot understand themselves?
so yeah, to Dahlia the archons and even the dragons are just another creature like him that just happens to have more power. and because of that he's quick to offer benevolence should they need it but if not, well they're just another friend to have a drink with

The mythology and lore around hares was puzzling to me since it appeared to divide into extremes, with the hare a signifier of virtue, renewal and self-sacrifice on the one hand, and a witchesâ familiar and harbinger of death, revenge or misfortune on the other. How, I wondered, could the same creature be both sacred and profane, chaste and promiscuous, lucky and unlucky; an emblem of self-sacrifice but also a witch in animal form; the embodiment of madness and foolishness but also wisdom?

How undignified, to tumble so clumsily from the hill and yet he can't help but to laugh when his back finally rests upon the ground. A mirthful sound well carried by the wind, even if his book of hymns lays open, threatening to scatter. It wouldn't be much loss, he knows them all by heart, and save for one song, all others are easily replaceable. He had started to sit up when a pale hand appears before his vision. Following it's guide he finds a pink haired woman, pale blue eyes, much like himself, for a moment he wonders if she's not a cousin. How fun it would be, to find family he doesn't know of.
"Thank you." Still he takes the hand, careful to not completely burden the woman with his weight. Quickly hands come to dust off whatever dirt might be upon his robes, taking his time to fix his hat and only then does he finally regard her. "How fortunate for you to be passing by such a place. Hopefully my fall has given you a good laugh."
