or… a story in which one headstrong boy falls head over heels and finds the rest of his life with a girl on a bar stool.
warnings- fluff fluff fluff! flirting. sexual tension. steve is smitten!!
somehow, by some miracle, despite spouses, school, kids- the Hawkins gang manages to stay toghether.
Some of them say it’s because of the trauma bond, other says it’s because of the familiarity. But some? Some say that their had to of been some higher power, some unexplainable force that had planned for them to become family.
Steve Harrington hoped there was a higher power.
And he hoped it had a plan for him.
And he hoped that plan involved the angel that was sitting on the stool at the bar top.
This reunion was special for the Hawkins family - Dustin Henderson twenty-first birthday. So, to celebrate the young Henderson becoming drinking age, the family set off to a bar on the north side of Hawkins.
With the north side of Hawkins being closer to Indiana, the bar was a hustle and bustle. Couples whispering and giggling into each others ears, friends catching up over shared drinks, others just desperate to throw themselves into the first pair of arms they could find.
But Steve Harrington couldn’t seem to find himself to care about any of that. Not when the most beatiful thing he had ever seen in his whole life was sitting just ten or so feet away from him, drinking a vodka lemonade and looking disgustingly bored.
Steve thought that was unfair. He thought that people as beautiful as her shouldn’t be allowed to be bored. Not when their beauty made it hurt to look at them.
Steve Harrington was a straight shooter- he was a guy who knew what he wanted and for the most time, got it.
When Steve saw a girl he wanted, a switch got flipped in his brain.
But this? This wasn’t a switch.
The loud-obnoxious kind you hear for the rest of your lives.
A house in the suburbs with a picket fence and a pool in the back.
A group of kids that get to have the love Steve never had, who got to confidently know their father would protect them from the monsters he knew existed.
And the center of this fantasy? The girl on the bar stool.
Steve was woken out of his daydream when he felt two fingers lightly tap his forearm.
“You wanna go talk to her?” Came from the soothing voice of Eddie Munson.
“Yes. Badly. Very- Very badly.” Came from the strained voice of Steve Harrington, as if he was chocking in want.
Eddie laughed before he playfully shoved Steve by the shoulders towards the girls general vicinity.
“Then go get her loverboy- it’s kind of hard to watch you undress her with your eyes here.” Eddie told Steve- giggles chocking his words.
But Steve’s throat just hitched in his breath. He could see the girl closer from here.
He could see the way her hair shone off the dingy bar light, how her hair framed her face so when she smiled her whole face smiled with her, how her nose was slightly crooked to the left.
He knew then, that any girl this beautiful couldn’t be mortal. Mortals were never this beautiful. She had to have been a witch.
And she was putting a spell on him. That was the most reasonable answer to Steve. That’s the reason why his legs suddenly failed to keep moving him.
But then he saw her smile, a real- toothy smile. The white canines of her teeth on display under the upper tuck of his lip. And he knew, he just knew he couldn’t go the rest of his life without having that smile around every corner of his life.
He only made it a step or two before he was stopped again.
“Steve? Don’t come on too strong.” Eddie told Steve, smirk illuminating his face.
Steve barely registered what Eddie said as he walked towards the girl on the bar stool, but she might as well have been the rest of Steve’s whole goddamn life.
“Come home with me.” Was the first words y/n heard as she saw somebody come and sit on the bar stool to the right of her.
“Excuse me? And who are you?” Y/n replied back, just a hint of repulsion evident in her tone.
Steve didn’t take any offense to the repulsion, he was a fighter- he didn’t back down easy.
“The man who’s gonna marry you.” Steve replied back to her as he leaned in towards her body with his shoulders.
His body seemed to crave her now- need her, and now he couldn’t find it physically possible to not be pulled into her orbit.
“I don’t even know your name.” The girl relied back to him, a slight smile tugging at the corners of her mouth
“Steve. It’s Steve.” The boy replied back as he inched his way closer to her
“That’s the most beautiful name I’ve ever heard.” Steve told her, not an ounce of deception in his voice.
The girl blushed and glanced down at her drink before she continued.
“Okay so- let’s just play into this fantasy a bit. Why would I marry you?” The girl asked Steve, tilting in closer to him with her head.
“Because I will spend the rest of my life worshipping you. Obviously.” Steve told her, looking deadly serious
The girl giggled at his response. Was he cocky? Yes. Was he full of himself? Probably. But he was charming. And he was kind. He didn’t feel the need to take things by force
“Do you tell every girl you meet that your the man their going to marry?”
“No. Only the one I actually am going to marry.”
After another hour, and a few more drinks, the girl had fallen victim to his charms.
She had learned that he was kind, and also a complete heartthrob. I mean, he worked as a little league basketball coach? Could you get any more charming? He was here with his group of friends from “highschool” he said. But the girl got the impression that he was lying about that.
She was leaning off her stool and resting her head on Steve’s shoulder, nuzzling it into the crook of his neck gently.
Steve swore he was going to die. Literally die.
Steve had one of his hands on her upper thigh, and the other one was resting just above the small of her back.
Steve was telling some joke about penguins, and she laughed into his shoulder.
He swore it was the most beatiful sound he’d ever heard.
“And y’know, there’s this huge library out in Hawkins, and we can go see it obviously, when you become my wife.” Steve told the girl, dumbfounded look in his eyes like he can’t believe he’s able to touch her like this.
“Woah, woah! Slow down, Steve.” The girl told him as she laughed into his shoulder.
Steve smiled down at her before he moved his hands off her body and went to cup her face while he leaned in slightly.
“Come home with me. Please. I’ll stop with all the marriage jokes- not that it’s a joke I’m just saying-“ Steve told her, rambling off slightly towards the end.
She kissed him before he could finish. Nestled her fingers in the collar of his shirt and pulled him towards her mouth.
If Steve wasn’t put under a spell before, he definitely was now.
He widened his eyes in surprise at the kiss before he leaned in closer and wrapped two arms around her waist, locking them over each other as if she was going to evaporate at any second.
This was a higher power, and Steve Harrington knew it. Some higher power put this girl in this bar for him- for him to love and cherish and worship.
“Yes- yes. I’ll go home with you.”
notes: small little thing while I work on part two of don’t smile because it happened, cry because it’s over! The dialogue in this is a hundred percent inspired by hadestown, lovurrr that musical!!
