Peaceful Protesters should be protected.
Rioters and people unlawfully blocking roads, should not.
You just blocked Martin Luther King Jr.
Martin Luther King Jr. never rioted. Not once. He also accepted the consequences when he broke the law, as it was important to demonstrate the laws were unjust and unneeded, while also demonstrating reasonable laws are important and must be followed for a civilized society to exists. If you want to march on a road, organize the event legally so traffic can be redirected.
Also, read a book. And stop trying to use the good name of MLK jr to justify barbaric acts of vandalism and childish tantrums.
People of your ilk have been accusing MLK Jr and Civil Rights Activists for inciting riots and violence ALL the time, so I’m confused as to what you mean.
The EXACT words you’re using to describe protesters have all been thrown at him. ‘Childish’ ‘throwing a tantrum’ ‘lawless’ ‘inclting vandalism and violence’.
And so then what does this relate to the fact that MLK marched in the streets?
Was blocking the road the epitome of evil and Dr King should have been locked up for being a ‘lawless childish character’?
Also while Dr. King wasn’t a large promoter of violence he certainly understood people taking extreme action when they felt the need, or as he put it, “A Riot is the language of the unheard.”
Oh goodness, this is embarrassing for you. You didn’t get the full context of that MLK quote! Boy golly, that could be misleading! Don’t worry. I have it right here for you.
“ Now I wanted to say something about the fact that we have lived over these last two or three summers with agony and we have seen our cities going up in flames. And I would be the first to say that I am still committed to militant, powerful, massive, non-violence as the most potent weapon in grappling with the problem from a direct action point of view. I’m absolutely convinced that a riot merely intensifies the fears of the white community while relieving the guilt. And I feel that we must always work with an effective, powerful weapon and method that brings about tangible results. But it is not enough for me to stand before you tonight and condemn riots. It would be morally irresponsible for me to do that without, at the same time, condemning the contingent, intolerable conditions that exist in our society. These conditions are the things that cause individuals to feel that they have no other alternative than to engage in violent rebellions to get attention. And I must say tonight that a riot is the language of the unheard. “
That’s better, context, right? In which context he clearly states riots are the incorrect way to deal with things. He states he understands why they happen, but they are still wrong. Riots did happen around him due to angry people, which the media attempted to hold him accountable for, but he did not organize them.
Also my ‘ilk?’ Why you must have me confused with someone else. No worries, it happens. You see, I think we can all agree it’s rather childish to BURN CARS BUILDINGS AND GARBAGE in the streets, you know, making hazards, over rather unclear and often ridiculous goals. Plus technically both parties are breaking the law, crazy right? MLK accepted charges whenever they occurred because he was guilty of breaking the law, however, he kept peacefully doing so to ridiculous laws, in order to prove he was no only a law abiding citizen, but the laws were ridiculous and unnecessary. A lot of mainstream media propaganda during turbulent times is just that, propaganda, the cartoons above are only half truths. Buuuuut, I’m pretty sure arson, assault, and vandalism laws aren’t ridiculous laws to have in place, am I right? Haha, but I’m SURE you didn’t mean me. Don’t worry, it’s fine.
You literally just copied the last paragraph I said along with the sentiment I said King had, but made it longer. 'MLK didn’t support violence but he understood why people felt the need for rioting when tensions were high’, thanks for the rephrasing.
that being said…first off, King was not just skipping to the jail cell, happy to be doing his duty for the law, he pleaded NOT GUILTY and tried to appeal to the jury in cases like State of Alabama vs MLK in 1956. You’re fabricating an entire persona for him that didn’t exist.
Second off, so you are you saying MLK DESERVED to be arrested for marching in the street? Yes or no? Then you admit a law that WOULD have had him arrested for it was ludicrous in the first place? But not in this case? Which one is it because I’m very confused on what you’re trying to say
Yes, adding the context of CONDEMNING riots, a point you just keep skipping right over. He understood them, he did not support them, he believed they were wrong. You can understand why Germans sided with Nazis in the beginning in WW2 and still understand why it is WRONG.
I am sticking to it. He didn’t go merrily, but he accepted the charges that were due and served the time given to him. He didn’t throw a bandanna over his face, kick a girl in the streets because he thinks she’s a Nazi and run off. He tried to appeal to others, but until he got them to agree with their own minds, he knew he couldn’t win.
When you break the law, you get arrested, so yes, in this case it was a rightful punishment in the eyes of the law. However, the laws themselves were flawed. I’m NOT talking about the laws of traffic, rather the racist laws in place at the time. So the times he was arrested for sitting in white only establishments and things of that nature were ludicrous, yes. However, obstructing traffic is illegal, and was meant to catch attention, which it did. But it’s still illegal, and these days, unnecessary. You can schedule events so traffic can be redirected. You can stay out of roads. There are other ways to get attention that line up with our first amendment and don’t involve burning shit down and endangering people, protesters and those in vehicles.
Schedule your events and stay off of freeways for your sake of and everyone else’s. Don’t break other people’s things. Don’t set things on fire. Don’t assault people. That’s all these bills are asking for. Why is that so much?
Of course 'he served his time'. As opposed to what? Digging a tunnel out cartoon style? But he clearly resisted in the judicial process and wasn't 'happy to pay his dues to society' like you've been painting him doing.
Ok, cool. Beating on random cars and random civilians is bad. That's out of the way. Folks in Antifa act outside of the law when they do stuff like that and I think they're aware.
But in the main point of this, in your eyes---not the eyes of the law, but your eyes--do you think that when Dr King marched and blocked all kinds of roads in peaceful protest, he and his fellow marchers deserved jail time and what the police did to them for 'breaking the law in reprehensible acts'?
And would a law permitting people to hit them with cars would have been well-deserved?
