Dothraki Khalasar Territories

So I was doing a bit of research into what the dothraki should have more realistically looked like, to make my own kind of au of the dothraki, and while doing said research it was brought up that each Khalasar really should have a set territory that they migrate around.

That put me onto thinking what part of the dothraki sea Khal Drogo might have claimed, which prompted me to look up maps of what portion of Essos does the dothraki sea cover, and then I couldn't find any maps that were clear enough for my tastes, so I mashed together a map out of the maps on this site with a bit of elbow grease and created this!

Then, of course, I had to actually decide where to put Khal Drogo's territory, and while I was doing that I decided to throw in the rest of the territories too. The source I looked at says "There are two dozen or more khalasars on the Dothraki sea", so I jammed twenty-five of the suckers in there.

Let me know what you think! Where would you have put the territory lines?

I really appreciated how Hannah’s story line was handled like I can’t personally think of another piece of media, especially in the genre of like silly horny rom com type shows, that has a main character who’s been raped and that aspect of her story is treated with reverence instead of being exploited for shock value and the story makes her rape into a big deal without it necessarily being her defining characteristic like Hannah Wells is way more than the girl who was raped™️ the story well and fully established her as her own character before unpacking the rape and how it affected her & also the scene with her and her mother when her mother tells her it’s not her fault she was just a teenager who went to a party like I know that book came out around the time the Audrey & Daisy doc did, well before the hockey Canada trial and the rise of Andrew Tate I just think it’s so important that a show as popular as off campus, that’s designed to appeal to women, featured that storyline and handled it the way the show did

like does Jules dream of being a hockey or sports commentator? Is her dream tied to her brother’s success and is that why she pushes him to focus on hockey? Does John Logan also bear the weight of knowing he’s Jules’s last chance of getting out of the garage? So much potential and yet it feels like Jules has no internal motivation they’re just a prop 😭

I like her explanation and I like where her heads at as far as all the different aspects of the story she wanted addressed including the whole gossip thing because it does establish the stakes of their fake relationship and like what the point of having a fake relationship even is because if no one is looking then it’s kind of dumb but I feel like Jules is just this weird narrative crutch because they’re wearing too many hats and it doesn’t really make sense like ok sibling role makes complete sense maybe commentator too they’re always at the games they probably grew up in a rink if their brother was always playing hockey but somehow the character falls flat like they don’t really have an arc of their own they’re just conveniently around to push the narrative forward and it’s a little too obvious

I do understand what Jules does for the narrative as in they provide a lot of short hand exposition for a story that relied primarily on internal dialogue in book format- ie a lot of what we know about John Logan was from his internal dialogue and that has to be externalized someway to translate his character arc to the screen and also Jules is used as a way of establishing the reputation of the hockey team in their little on campus world via the fifth line account ummm that being said it is buck wild to me that there’s a character who is just openly posting everyone’s business on a public Instagram account and all the people they’re always posting about are just cool with someone who lives in the house with them always posting their business ??

becoming obsessed with my own meta but the more I think about it the more Iove it was a concept: John Logan the man who wants what he can’t have. There’s a safety in wanting what you can never have; there’s no need to be anxious about the outcome because you already know how the story is going to end. It makes so much sense for the eldest son of an alcoholic (I’m talking strictly about the character in the show). His dad is gone, the only thing his mom seems to be consistent about is falling off the wagon. His life was chaotic and he probably could never get attached to anything without eventually losing it. Even his dream of pro hockey is like almost impossible and probably most of his life he never knew when he was going to be forced to give it up for good. He’s used to not being able to have things, what he can’t stand is the constant fear he’s about to lose something.

He never made a move towards Hannah or expressed any interest in her when she was available. Assuming the kiss is when he ~falls~ for Hannah, it happens immediately after he catches her and garret kissing which is theoretically the moment she becomes off limits. That’s the moment she becomes safe for him to want. Despite how considerate he is, he’s still wrong for Hannah because what he feels towards her is a manifestation of his own issues. I think his season is going to be really fun if it forces him to confront his crippling fear of loss and need for control

one core thing I will always remember about off campus is that I read it in college at a point in my life when I was being forced to deal with rape as a reality for the first time as multiple people I knew were assaulted in college and it really normalized a girl who has a healthy sex life after rape and how someone can be traumatized by something yet not defined by it and I think that’s a really huge subversive message that’s getting buried in that the this show isn’t heated rivalry takes and if I’m really getting controversial I would argue that heated rivalry being treated like some radical transcendent work of art while off campus is straight woman porn slop when ultimately they’re both tv adaptions of cartoon cover romance novels is because oppression vulnerable groups of men face is considered real but the way off campus imagines a new reality for women in a space that’s often violent and dismissive of them irl by emphasizing the importance of consent and agency isn’t considered radical or artistic because women’s oppression isn’t taken seriously

I personally am willing to defend the Hannah kissing John Logan scene because I think it makes sense as being the thing that launches his thinking he’s in love with Hannah arc like sure he always noticed her but low key he notices everybody- a byproduct of his upbringing- but it doesn’t necessarily mean he thought of her in that way until suddenly she’s coming around more and he’s getting to know her as more than the pretty girl at Malone’s then she kisses him and she’s insistent that she’s only around to help Graham study at that point so maybe it suddenly becomes cosmically significant that she’s coming around more and she’s so hard working like he is and has to earn everything with no guarantee of success like he does and she tolerates hockey players now so why not him

especially is he has some kind of complex about wanting things he can’t have like Jules accuses him of. it really sets up such an interesting and perfect arc for a character who feels like they exist in someone else’s shadow ( graham the golden boy hockey player who gets everything Logan wants so easily). it can become addictive to always live with the idea of something when reality, where you can lose something, can be scary. it makes sense that he’s the guy who would get fixated on a woman he could have approached at any point the second he can’t have her anymore. she’s not his to lose. I think the way his character is being built this season will make his relationship with grace v interesting I’m excited

it’s been exactly 10 years since I actually read the off campus books and idk if I’ll return to them or just take the show for what it is but in general I feel like being a purist about book to movie adaptions is no fun especially when there’s a solid decade between when the book was written and when the tv show is being created like specifically with some of the changes that seem to add more depth to the characters and make the story more realistic like the dad telling Hannah to stay away from Graham or whatever especially when she knows that he’s an abuser it’s kind of cartoonish imo I feel like the story benefited from that change at least

My unpopular opinion is that the Off Campus series is actually really well done compared to the book. The characters are fleshed out more and the friendships are given a lot more chances to shine.

Also I need everyone to get off this “one couple per season” storyline. Bridgerton’s season arcs are okay for a first season but becomes increasingly difficult to pull off in a well executed manner the more seasons happen.

By making Off Campus season 1 a season where Hannah and Garrett are the main couple but we actually see and get to know the surrounding characters is wayyyy better storytelling
