THE GATEKEEPERS (Dante’s Inferno, Canto 1)
One of my most favourite books for its vivid, theosophical inquiries, Dante’s inferno begins with our “hero” on the surest and the most straightforward way to heaven when he’s interrupted by the trio depicted here: the LEOPARD of UNCHASTE LUST; the LION of BRUTAL, UNCHECKED POWER; and the WOLF of ILL-CONCEIVED GREED.
The book is also memorable for perhaps one of the earliest portrayals of an empathetic Devil. Part fantasy, part inquiry and maybe even partly confessional, “The Divine Comedy” is an engaging read of you want to give your mind a little exercise.
Whatever his conception, Dante likely drew inspiration for the beasts from this biblical passage prophesying the destruction of those who refuse to repent for their iniquities: “Wherefore a lion out of the wood hath slain them, a wolf in the evening hath spoiled them, a leopard watcheth for their cities: every one that shall go out thence shall be taken, because their transgressions are multiplied, their rebellions strengthened” (Jeremiah 5:6). #arttherapy #dante #inferno #literature ##bookworm #sketch #inspiration #dailyinspo
