What my morning has been looking like. Starting to feel unprepared for this exam ahhh.
This seems like something everyone should know if they’re in the sciences and/or interested in reading scientific papers.
Also, Sci-Hub is totally not a thing that doesn’t allow you to access papers, so don’t even think of trying it. This isn’t the link, so don’t bookmark it: https://sci-hub.tw/
tips to get rid of the fear of the blank page 📝
if you’re like me (and most students), when you have an essay or dissertation to start, or even when simply beginning a new section of your writing, the blank page can look overwhelmingly daunting. you procrastinate, you fiddle with the formatting, you do anything except what you should — that is, actually writing. here’s how i trick myself to get over this panic:
use a crappy notebook: it breaks your focus from the word document staring you in the eye. tell yourself, ‘i’ll just scribble down some notes here, no pressure’. don’t use a fancy one either! i often want to make the best use of my fancy notebooks, which in turn stresses me out in its own way.
write your notes in pencil, not pen - this ties in with my previous point, but your goal here is to make things feel as low-pressure and low-commitment as you can. embrace the messy handwriting!
write fast, almost stream-of-consciousness notes as if you were explaining what you know about the thing you’re writing about to someone else. it’s okay if you use informal language, just get the backbone of the information down on the page! try to think of everything you need to talk about to make your writing coherent.
bullet points and sectioning will make it easier to navigate your notes when polishing up the content for the final text, but again, don’t sweat it.
make a post-it note of things you need to look up/ask someone about later, but don’t get stuck on them when you start typing the final text, just insert a little note when writing, and be sure to make it stand out (i.e. use a different colour) so you don’t accidentally leave it in
you’ve done all of this, now all you need to do is rephrase your notes to make them sound fancy! don’t overthink this either, i find it preferable to come back to your text after a while and do the final editing with a fresher look. and congrats! you’re pretty much done! the trick is not overthinking it, and remembering:
done is always better than perfect.
hearing your target language in a random place and being able to understand even the smallest, tiny bit of what they’re saying is the best feeling in the whole wide world

And if your girlfriend is your lab partner that’s what you call eternal love
It’s essay season! Gear up with the Recursive Paragraph model. lt is best used for persuasive essays and is especially useful in integrating research to support your claims. I will overview the six steps that will get you writing brilliant paragraphs for your next essay. Keep in mind, by the time you are using this paragraph model, you will probably have a thesis and an outline and your research ready.
Part One: The Controlling Idea
a.k.a. the “topic sentence”
Give your reader and idea of what this paragraph is going to be about.
This is usually one of the “points” that is supporting your thesis.
Part Two: Contextualize
This is where you introduce your quotation/citation that will support your argument.
How does it relate to your “controlling idea”?
How would you introduce it to a friend?
Assume your audience (your professor or teacher) is familiar with the material–no need to over-contextualize.
Part Three: Citation
This is where you integrate your citation, whether it be an in-text citation, block quote, or summary.
Make sure to use proper citation so as not to plagiarize!
Be sure to smoothly integrate the citation, using author names, for example: “Even Herbert Blau states that…” That is just one of thousands of possibilities.
Part Four: Analyze
This is where you break apart and close read your citation.
Thinking about how you would explain to a friend is helpful.
Try to break down the citation into smaller parts and analyze those.
Make sure your analysis is as close to the text as possible; in other words, don’t stray from the crux of your citation.
Part Five: Synthesis
This is by far the most important step!
This is the “so what?” of your point: why it matters.
How do these smaller parts relate to your controlling idea?
How does your interpretation/analysis develop your overall argument?
Part Six: Restate
You’re almost done with your brilliant paragraph!
All you need to do is restate your thesis in terms of your new synthesis.
In other words, recall back to your thesis statement.
The beginning of the next paragraph will call back to the end of this paragraph.
I hope this was helpful! Message me with any questions.

15 Yemen Road: The place Chandler Bing tried to go to avoid Janice. Some people may think Yemen’s in Africa. It’s not. It’s a country in Asia that’s considered part of the Middle East. And it’s one of the countries listed in President Trump’s controversial immigration order. Subscribe to TheSkimm via the link below for more on immigration and other world news right in your in inbox first thing in the morning (because ICYMI, there are #NoExcuses).
Hi, friends! Last night, Senator Sessions was confirmed as attorney general by the Senate. Whether you agree or disagree with this, it is important to know who he is, what he stands for, and what he plans to do in this role. TheSkimm told me all of that this morning in my newsletter. If you want more of theSkimm, subscribe via the attached link. Stay informed, friends! JEFF'S IN SESSION THE STORY Last night, the Senate confirmed Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) to be attorney general aka America’s lawyer. WHO IS HE AGAIN? A longtime Alabama senator and former Alabama AG. He was one of President Trump’s earliest supporters and became one of his advisors on the campaign trail. He’s known for being tough on immigration and has said he’ll make fighting terrorism a priority. As AG, he’ll be in charge of the Justice Department. Meaning he’ll be responsible for defending Trump’s immigration ban and investigating things like police misconduct. WHAT DO CRITICS SAY? That he has a questionable record on civil rights. Back in the 80s, the Senate denied him a job as a federal judge after accusations that he’d made racist comments. Earlier this week, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) took to the Senate floor and read part of a letter Coretta Scott King wrote accusing Sessions of suppressing black voters. The Senate GOP voted to force her to stop speaking because she was using her time to criticize a fellow senator. Cue outrage from a lot of Dem lawmakers. WHAT DO SUPPORTERS SAY? That he’s a “man of honor” who’s very qualified to defend US laws. And that it’s unfair to keep bringing up decades-old accusations. Sessions himself also vowed during his confirmation hearing that he wouldn’t be a “rubber stamp” for everything Trump wants to do. theSKIMM Congress always gets along famously. On opposite day. But recent cabinet confirmations have made the relationship between Dems and the GOP even more contentious than usual, and exposed a political showdown that’s showing no signs of stopping. Rock, meet Capitol Hill place.
