Elphaba's hands went to fiddle with one another, hidden underneath her long cloak. The other's curiosity made her stomach churn in nervousness. Elphaba was used to disappointment from people. She's used to the stares and whispers and disgust. Can't she have this one thing where she feels... normal. Going to the opera, enjoying media like others. In the semi-open, at least through private seats hidden in the shadows with Nessa or from backstage.
"No." the woman in the shadows hummed. The other's smile was radiant. The familiar feeling of envy bubbled up like liquid in a cauldron. Beauty always had it easy. She glanced at the hand, outstretched to her. Elphaba's fingernails dig into the palm of of one of her hands - as if to stop her from reaching out. It will lead to disappointment. She feared. "No... you wouldn't." she said steadily after a moment before pausing, shifting a bit in the darkness. She shifted back into the darkness as she said. "My name is Elphaba," she does concede that. "You were... amazing." she admitted.
⠀the silence hangs for several moments. in it christine soon realizes the rejection she will face ⸺ the simple ‘ no, ’ comes as no surprise to her, but even still she can't help the visible disappointment. her face falls, & dejectedly, her hand closes into a loose fist, dropping back to her side. christine glances away from the shadows & swallows. ‘ no... you wouldn't. ’ the woman says.
⠀she almost thinks to turn & go in embarrassment, meaning to instead leave her alone, but the moment the voice speaks again, her attention is redirected.
⠀it was a name christine had never heard before ⸺ she has to process this, brows drawn together in slight confusion, before at last she awkwardly moves to repeat it. ❝ elphaba, ❞ she tries, though it catches on her tongue. she says it once more. ❝ elphaba... ❞ there, that sounded better... ❝ how pretty! ❞ christine exclaims. ❝ a name I would imagine belongs to a faerie... ❞
⠀at once it seemed as if nothing had happened at all, for she is back to her smiling self at the presence of this new information. she continues, laughing, ❝ thank you! oh, I was so worried... playing juliette is new to me. I consider it a miracle I even made it on the stage... ❞
