A note for my fanfic readers (if you’re out there)

Hi, not sure how many people who read my fics follow my tumblr but Ao3 doesn’t really have a good way of putting out a mass update, so I’m putting it here.

For the readers of my current multichap fanfics, which include Gifted Kids, Through Your Teeth, and Truth Be Told, I know that it’s been a couple months since I posted knew chapters. But I want to make sure everyone knows, NONE OF THESE FANFICS ARE ABANDONED!!!

I am still working on all of them. However, there has been real life stuff going on in the past few months that has drained my energy and made it difficult for me to focus on my writing. I’ll be able to get down a few more sentences one night, or manage a couple paragraphs, but overall progress has been slow.

Basically, I’ve just been in a writing slump.

However! The good news is, some of the real life stuff (leaving my old job and starting a new one) does have a set end date! Hopefully when I am fully transitioned out of my old job, some of my stress will be alleviated and I’ll be able to focus when I’m writing again!

If you do have questions about my fics, or just want to talk fandom in general, feel free to send an ask and I’ll get back to you whenever I can.

I look forward to continuing these stories and still think about them everyday. So if you’re a fan and you think these fics have been abandoned, just sit tight! Hopefully they’ll be more updates soon!

Twurp’s Peerage made me throw a book (gently) at a wall.

In the UK, the book of the peerage is called Burke’s Peerage. Burke sounds like berk, which means a silly/annoying person. So Terry took ‘twerp’, another word for a silly or annoying person, and replaced the e with u. 

The Book of Silly and Annoying People, based on the real thing with a pun on the name thrown in for good measure.

In Carpe Jugulum, Count Magpyr boasts of having helped write the Malleus Maleficarum, along with the Torquus Simiae Maleficarum, the Auriga Clavium Maleficarum, and in fact the entire Arca Instrumentorum.

The Malleus Maleficarum is a very real, very nasty and absolutely batshit insane book from late 15th-century Germany, basically laying out the procedure for catching, torturing, and executing witches. Its title translates to The Hammer of Witches. The other titles are Pratchett's inventions.

I actually really love to talk about zoot suits and their associated subcultures. The amount that the silhouettes of the zoot suit have shaped american fashion and trends of oversized clothes is so understated. And, yk, I'm biased as hell, but it is kinda crazy how influential zoot suit culture was

I always love the og zoot suits made by black americans in Harlem, I really like looking at the changes from these clothes from the 30s to some of the more exaggerated renditions from the 40s. It's also so interesting to look at how fast the subculture spread, and especially in the american west integrated with mexican diaspora and pachuco culture to the point that that's what a lot of usamericans associate them with.

⬆️ long wallet chains and pork pie hats were classic accessories for mexican diaspora zoot suiters. Zoot suits/their components were also really popular with women and were a way to symbolize independence and a choice to move away from strict gender roles on top of the existing countercultural message ⬇️

Anyways it's kind of impossible to talk about zoot suits without mentioning the racism and violence that followed them. On top of a zoot suit making someone a target for individual racial violence, the national reaction of white america to zoot suit culture was part of the beginning of clothing and presentation being read explicitly as signals by police and justice systems, and the broad association of youth of color with gang violence through this specific excuse. Gang culture and how it's percieved in the western US and especially California is very influenced by this era. The most famous events from the zoot suit era are the collective zoot suit riots and the media characterization of all mexican american, filipino american, and black american youth as violent anti-american baby gangsters. Which, even if that was broadly true I mean. I'll take the opportunity to be flippant hell yeah??

As a side note, while making more new zoot suits during war rationing was pretty sick, most people weren't buying from the black market tailor shops and just wore what they already owned because the style had been popular for years already. People bought clothes less often to begin with back then. I think that misconception comes from the reasoning white americans gave to go beat up people of color with baseball bats in the street; i.e. it was racial and xenophobic violence to begin with and the nature of the suits themselves has been mushed around a lot to serve different narratives.

I adore the zoot suit aesthetic, for its look, for its history, for its cultural associations and significance, and I do so because they're beautiful -- the color, the cut, the tailoring, it's all so intentional. It's identity in fashion. What's not to love?

I did way too much research for this question but I have an answer and all of this can be found in the clone wars show! Their tubes have no synthetic umbilical chords when they are forming and in S2E10 “The Deserter” where Rex’s belly button would be is just flat skin. The area can only be seen for a small amount of time but there is nothing there. It could be the flat art style but I prefer to believe that it’s another clone quirk that sets them apart from natural born humans.

Clone troopers do not have belly buttons.

i cannot emphasize enough how important it is that you should ideally give birth in a fully equipped and staffed medical facility or if you insist on giving birth through an alternative method you should be within minutes of a hospital and i mean under 5 minutes if you’d like me to be really fucking frank

like i can get on board with so much feminist theory and stuff, truly, and i do acknowledge that obstetrics and gynaecology as a field holds blind spots that are egregious (e.g. infant and maternal mortality in the black community) but there is no empowerment in risky birthing practices that our foremothers, and i’m not mincing words, often suffered through. birthing is natural, but it is not “easy” or even “innate”, it is best practiced guided and witnessed by those that know what to do in an emergency. you are not reconnecting to any innate feminine nature by practicing dangerous birthing practices—you are recreating a time when the bodies and lives of women barely mattered and it was expected that death would/could occur at insane and tragic rates.

this is a hill i will spend the rest of my days fighting on because while i am not interested in birthing children myself, i have an incredible passion and interest in the field of labour and delivery. it’s been one of my greatest joys to play even a small part in delivering neonates. i do not want anyone to risk their babies over a deeply, deeply misguided idea of free birth being “the natural way” when natural is not always synonymous with the safest way.

So many people think it's either midwife or doctor. It's not. Have your midwife or doula in the hospital room with you, I promise the doctors don't give a shit. Hell, you can have her do the delivery itself and just have the doctors there as emergency backup! But for the love of your baby, go to the fucking hospital.

yup. a lot of hospitals are willing to work with you to realize your birthing plan as much as they can within safe limits and parameters. my hospital is closely and highly allied with midwives all up and down the coast, with the explicit instruction to call the midwife when we know a labouring patient is about to deliver so we can respect their plan. genuinely, you can have almost any kind of birth you want—just make sure that there are qualified professionals in attendance, and it’s not just midwives or OBGYNS you need. you have no idea when you’ll need a respiratory therapist on call, you have no idea when you will need a blood transfusion within minutes or risk certain death, L&D nurses do not have the same training as NICU nurses if a baby declines rapidly. it’s a literal thousand things that can go wrong and you should be in the best place for them to go wrong.

And please, please, please do not get pulled into the "free birth" propaganda. Babies have died (including the baby of a prominent "free birth" influencer) and women have suffered irreparable harm.

1. Start prenatal care as soon as you know you're pregnant.

2. Plan to give birth in a hospital.

2b. If you absolutely will not plan to give birth in a hospital, give birth with an experienced midwife in attendance who WILL transfer you to a hospital in an emergency. Emergencies do happen in childbirth and can be fatal.

2c. If you have a precipitous birth (happened to a friend of mine), please let a loved one or the nice paramedics take you and the baby to the hospital to get checked.

Insurance companies will often actually pay for a doula! Even if you have kinda shitty insurance! It's actually more cost effective to have a doula do most of the work, and the doctors just around in case of emergency. When my sister briefly worked for the dark side (United) her main job for a while was doing the stats to show how cost effective they are.

But also because when I was 11 i read a short story about a girl who went to a museum and stole a bandage flake off a mummy on display with the mentality of "im just one person one piece won't be missed" then at night she was visited by the mummy and it plucked a single hair from her head and then the next night a different mummy took another hair and she realized that there were only so many pieces to her before there would be nothing left and that story was forever wedged in my brain.
