“When journeying from unchastity to chastity, it is important to recognize the reality of two forms of sorrow: one, is holy sorrow over past sins. There is another form of sorrow, natural to our weak state: sorrow that the sins we once used as coping mechanisms are no more.

The key in that part of the journey is to be “transformed by the renewal of our minds” and to replace the sinful coping mechanisms with good and healthy ways of dealing with loneliness or pain. But it’s unsurprising to feel sad, leaving sins behind at first. Joy does come though!

It’s a painful process leaving sins of unchastity behind, but the pain is like the surgeon’s knife, excising a cancerous tumor in our souls. It’s very, very, very hard and painful leaving things like pornography behind, but the pain of the surgery is worth it!

One more thing: it often takes many surgeries. That’s what the Sacrament of Reconciliation is for. Go to the Great Physician, as often as it takes. And then go some more!”

Mary Magdalene … did not do what you and I would do. She did not pour out the precious perfume drop by drop as if to indicate by the slowness of the giving the generosity of the gift. She broke the vessel and gave everything, for love knows no limits. Immediately the house was filled with perfume. It was almost as if, after the death of that perfume and the breaking of the bottle, there was a resurrection. Broken things are precious. We eat broken bread because we share in the death of our Lord and his broken life. Broken flowers give perfume. Broken incense is used in adoration. A broken ship saved Paul and many other passengers on the way to Rome. Sometimes the only way the good Lord can get into some hearts is to break them.
