The way you describe jack pepper's character is fascinating. He's a gruff detective who went through horrible war, and yet he has somewhat innocent worldview like thinking corrupted police as something that's impossible to exist

The fact that he wanted to be a cop after getting discharged from the military in the first place absolutely fucking baffled me—Especially when he directly talks about his gripe with fighting in the war which was that he was used as a pawn and they didn't care about him or any solider risking his life. You'd think with such a large distate for people in power he'd also hate police as well as it's a position that gives people power which as we see, easily corrupts and can be abused.

It gets even weirder and contradictory when you look at his view towards people pushed into crime via circumstance like cheeseleggers. He just doesn't understand that getting a job and doing things the "right way" isn't an option for everybody when the system itself is rigged to keep them down, Tammy who's way younger than him understands it though and rightfully calls him narrow-minded. Despite this narrow-mindedness we also see that he's on board and in agreence with Cornelius' idea that Jack can make a difference and dismantle the very system in place that keeps people down and Cornelius himself will do his best to make sure it isn't rebuilt. He's a character who somehow holds ideals on both ends of the spectrum of "good" where he has beliefs that align with what's right factually and what's right morally. It's even more bizzare as you mentioned that he's grizzled which ya know—YOU'D THINK HE'D BE DESENSITIZED RIGHT??? But he's not! He's not some downer who thinks nothing he does matters and in fact fights even harder to make a change despite all that he's seen.

His psychology is just fascinating to me and while I'm no pyschologist myself he's what I'd dub a "cynical optimist". Don't know if that's an actual term or not and if it has a meaning—not gonna look it up—but what I'd label a "cynical optimist" is someone who's optimism comes from a place of understanding bleak reality. Jack knows how the world works and he's not blind to how people are often puppets to people who pull the strings as there's always someone pulling them (which control is a big theme in the game), despise this knowledge Jack doesn't work to cut the strings but instead to make them neater and less tangled. He understands he can't do everything, he even remarks that he hopes there's other people like him out there helping folks, yet he still does the best he can and understands that to help people he has to let his own strings be pulled except he fights back if there's ever a chance of them trying to make him do something he doesn't want. Jack's bio states he hasn't succumbed to the darkness yet and I think that's the big giveaway that despite how depressive of a life he's lived, he doesn't see a reason to sob about it and instead does something about it, he does what he CAN do and won't try and push it over. Jack is the type of guy to fully believe the sentiment "we're all gonna die, so what does it matter?" But instead of the classic not-giving-a-fuck way, Jack instead gives even more fucks cause he truthfully doesn't see the harm in trying. This isn't to say he's some ray of sunshine, far from it of course, it's just he maintains a certain hope in him and even when that hope is crushed he's definitely hurt and even frazzled by it but actively refuses to give up what he believes in and instead goes "Well fuck, that sucks but I gotta keep pressing on". I just absolutely fucking love him and I think this sort of complex and contradictory way of thinking he has should be acknowledged and experimented with more relating to fan content of him

Watched an entire playthrough of Mouse: P.I. for hire (because I cannot physically play games where the primary feature is only shooting, I'd freeze up too often </3) and I am obsessed with Jack and Tammy (and Millie) <3 These mice are so cute I cant, the voice acting for Jack is also superb AAAA
