So many people tell me they cannot lose anymore weight and they hit a plateau. Well what are you eating? Answer is almost ALWAYS, “Just small amounts of protein and I cut carbs completely out of my diet.”
WHAT?! WHY?! Carbs are energy! You need carbs! Healthy carbs of course not the sugar and junk!
First I bet most of you do not know what your thyroid gland is. It is a very important hormonal gland that plays an essential role in metabolism, growth, and maturation of the human body. It regulates many of the bodies functions. It releases a specific amount of hormones into the blood. So if you decrease your carbohydrate intake for a long period of time along with a low calorie diet, it has a negative impact on your thyroid. The thyroid hormones regulate the rate of the metabolism, along with the energy you spend at rest throughout the day, which all affects the results you want, your results will slow down and your weight will plateau. At first it is not very noticeable that your metabolism is slowing down. BUT like you all know and have asked me why you plateau, the result of cutting out carbs and having a low calorie diet is why! Your body needs carbs!
I am guilty of this as well. When I first started I just thought all I needed to do was drink a shake and eat broccoli. Hell no! Your body needs healthy fuel. Especially if you are working out.
If you are lifting you definitely want to keep carbs in your meal plan. Depending on the intensity of your work out and your goals you would adjust the amount of carbs you intake. You need carbs for the energy you plan to put out during your training sessions. If you are on a low carb and calorie diet you will notice that your intensity will decrease after 1-2 weeks and lifts will come to a halt pretty fast. Your muscle glycogen will start to deplete, your CNS will become exhausted, and it will start to get harder for you to get out of bed.
Besides the lack of energy you will have, carbs are directly related to your body recovering after you work out. After each training session you will start to notice that you will become weaker and weaker.
The amount of carbs you consume plays a part on the amount of water your body stores. So if you are doing a low calorie diet and cut out carbs, you’re losing water weight. Those pounds are not fat and the loss won’t last. (That is why I hate the quick fix scams. 24 day challenges ect.)
There is a difference with having moderate carbs in your diet and non. You need the proper nutrition to achieve the body you want. So yeah cutting out carbs drastically is a quick fix, but let’s get real, you’re going to have a bad day and eat a pizza, cookies, ice cream, I mean your human and then you are going to be back to where you started.
Now there are completely different types of carbs. You have your good carbs and bad carbs. If you have common sense I bet you already know that candy, chips, pizza, so on and so on are BAD CARBS. Good carbs are veggies, fruit, and whole grains.
There ya go... Do NOT cut out carbs. Eat them in moderation and make sure they are full of nutrients!
