Happy Belated Valentine’s Day!!
finally decided to do something with that one 2000 year old sketch
I just realized that Kirito having gender dysphoria explains one of the weirdest cinematic choices the anime made: Kirito being fully-dressed and halfway across the room instead of in bed with Asuna after heavily implied offscreen intimacy.
It's almost as if somebody felt a sudden wave of visceral disgust towards their own body once things simmered down and needed to cover-up and get some space in order to reign in that dysphoria.
(Seriously though, Kirito laying in bed with Asuna in a similar state of undress would've probably been way cheaper and less time consuming, due to requiring fewer backgrounds to be drawn, so the fact that she didn't stay in bed with Asuna must be significant enough to warrant the extra time and money dedicated to those backgrounds.)
I always found that aspect of the mini cabin arc to be so fascinating. They're married. They are married, they are wearing wedding rings and they are living in the same house and they love each other and
And Kirito is still in a separate bed across the room. And Kirito is embarrassed when she's caught looking at Asuna with longing and want and desire. And Kirito is still hesitant and uncomfortable despite loving and wanting Asuna so deeply.
As intended it just plays as the typical awkward anime protagonist. With the trans reading it transforms into something more and something deeper.
She is made uncomfortable by her own want. Unsure on how to express that want within the confines of a body that makes her uncomfortable, of a body that she is constantly conscious of.
WAAAA KIRITO :'0
The other day I saw a post using Kirito as an example of an "underdesigned" character, and like...
That's... Kinda the point?
Even ignoring the trans-subtext for a second, Kirito is noted to be at her most comfortable in the video game world, but even her initial SAO Avatar is designed to kinda "blend into the background" prior to everyone's real world appearances getting revealed. She does not want people to notice her, and so goes with the least attention-grabbing looks she can.
Taking the trans subtext back into account now, think about what it says about Kirito that her most "main-character" looking avatar is her GGO avatar. She's at her most lively in that form.
it’s also, at least interestingly to me, the first time we see her actively choose to wear something.
In Aincrad we can assume that most of her stuff is loot from various quests and monster fights, considering that when she first dons her dark jacket, it’s a boss reward.
In Alfheim, her Avatar is a generic base, so those clothes aren’t specialized either. (And sure her gear changes by the time we get to Excalibur and Rosario but I think it’s still safe to assume she’s still going the loot drop route in terms of fashion.)
It’s only really in GGO do we see her actively pick out and purchase her gear, and while the general vibe is the same, a lot of the changes that were made are more feminine leaning.
In GGO, her trench coat has transformed into a cropped jacket and a flared belted half skirt/belted bustle skirt, the belt accented by a purple crystal ornament. This first appears in her Alfheim look, but again, this is the first time we see her make the choice to wear this. She’s also wearing a breast plate that slightly curves outwards, giving off the appearance of a softer chest.
Also of note is that this is the first time her main outfit has shown more skin, with her wrists and ankles being visible. What’s not visible, however, is her throat. Her jacket collar buttons in the front, right over where her laryngeal notch (Adam’s Apple) is.
The clothes she chooses in GGO are farm more feminizing than her base outfit, and while the argument could be made that she was worried about blowing her cover in front of Sinon, it seems unreasonable to assume that another player could see her inventory while purchasing gear.
Overall, GGO is the first time we really see Kirito take active participation in her Avatar’s appearance, and it’s also her most notably ‘flashy’ out of all her designs. She chooses to accentuate the avatar’s femininity and goes on to play into said femininity.
The moment she got presented with anonymity as well as the option to look more ‘girly’, she took it and ran with it.
TL;DR: The way Kirito dresses in GGO is in direct contrast with the way she dresses in previous games. She makes the choice to present femininely once she realizes she has the chance.
It's also so important to remember that the first couple chapters of vol1 establish Kirito as being self-conscious about how feminine she actually looks IRL, but then the moment she's in a situation where no one will possibly recognize her during Phantom Bullet, the moment she realizes she's even MORE fem than she normally looks, she chooses to embrace it with confidence. That's not the decision of someone who dislikes being feminine. That's the decision of someone who was pressured out of it, someone afraid of how others would perceive her. This doesn't stop after Sinon learns who she is either. She still continues to embrace it. Phantom Bullet is easily one of the most important arcs for understanding Kirito as a character, I feel.
just gonna leave this bit from volume 8 here;
(takes place right after kirito left klein behind when the death game had just started)
i don't think i need to add anything here
It’s insane just how much source material actively backs up this headcanon omfg KIRITO YOU EGG

happy yujikiri monday (I made that up)
eugeo is such a scary white boy
On my journey to redraw kirito as a lesbian
Transfem Kirito and Asuna!!!
i can’t believe that ggo alternative exists. the main character is strongly implied to be a trans woman, she’s sapphic, the deuteragonist is bisexual, another character is bisexual and nonbinary. like. sao has always been a series of “find yourself and make friends with the other people society pushes to be outcast” messaging but ggo specifically is sooo………….. welcome back weird unpalatable queer people ive missed you so much <3333333
they hate me for my transgender swag and impassioned opinions on sword art online
I very much enjoy that a lot if the modern sao fan base all agree kirito is not cis. I personally headcanon him has transmasc but transfem kirito truthers are so so based.
Some sao doodles and my silly ass plushies :3c
why did sugou bully kazuto like that he was literally neurodivergent and a minor
If swe doesnt flub it Saoa Kirito and Suguha will br the siblings of all time. Like nwjwkehei!!!!!!
Uhg it's so real. They loved each other as kids. They were artificially pitted against each other. They drifted. Kirito went death game comatose for 2 years. What if your sibling "died and came back wrong" but "wrong" was better and now you are the problem. Were you always the problem? You started video games while your brother was "gone" specifically to feel closer to him; learn about him. Hes back and ya'll assholes to each other again. was it for nothing? Hes nicer to everyone who isnt you. Hes nice. Why are you mean? Are you the problem? You dont want to be the problem. How does one stop being the problem?
ita soooooooo qiqjqjssbhhhgfggqjgjxi grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
