"Hmmm...." She pretended to think for a moment before shaking her head, the smile still bright on her face. "No, not too silly." She promised.
"But pretty silly."
The Witch wasn’t sure how the child gotten here either but she wasn’t going to question it because the child being here just meant another slave for her castle. That alone made her quite happy. ❝ That’s fine. You’ll be staying here with me then. ❞
❝ Okay? ❞
"I will?" Emma thought about it for a moment before she nodded. Staying here was better than wandering around somewhere she'd never been or heard of before. "Okay."

She’d been sitting in the park, scribbling and coloring in a little notebook for what seemed like hours. It was weird for her to be so focused, but there were so many things to draw and color, so she kept at it.
She must have been a weird sight, a little girl sitting there with no guardian in sight.
When the person brought the food up, setting it down on a tray and sliding it towards her, he looked up and over at Emma, eyeing her with obvious curiosity. Attention turned back to Cat, who picked up the tray and was about to turn away. ”How old’s your daughter?”
“Daughter? Why the fuck would y’think she’s my daughter? I’d have t’have had her when I was, like, nine. If you’re going t’make an assumption, a’least try something tha’ makes sense like a sister,” she responded, the acid in her voice almost palpable before she stalked over to the table, setting down the tray and distributing the food. ”Alright, eat up.”
Emma stopped looking out the window, sliding down into the seat as she saw Cat come back. She hadn't seen the exchange between Cat and the server, so she still wore a bright smile. It just widened as Cat passed her food. "Thank you!"
She wasted no time before she started to eat, taking a bite out of her burger. She hummed quietly, speaking to Cat, but not looking up from her food. "'s really good."
❝Oh, this could be awesome! Who do you think we should try to scare first? –––– or we could do something else. ❞
"Let's-!"
She paused, thinking for a second. If they scared one of the bigger kids, they'd definitely get mad, and who knows what would happen after that?
"Do somethin' else."
With a gentle smile Ruby stands from the side of the bed and moves to flick on a bedside lamp. It’s not too bright, and Emma seems too tired to care, Ruby thinks, though most kids were afraid of the dark, so she’ll leave it as it is. Heading to the bedroom door, Ruby turns the main light off and slips into the main room of her apartment.
The bedroom door is ajar just enough that if Emma gets scared she can come outside and find Ruby. The waitress wastes no real time before she has her phone out, dialling the one person who might be able to help in this situation. Not that Graham is a social worker, but he must have some way of locating the little girls foster parents. She doesn’t offer much information other than Emma’s name and the situation she found the girl in before Graham is doing his searches over the phone to her.
❝ She’s fast asleep, I think. Poor girl was exhausted. I don’t think she’s had a real bed to sleep in for days now… weeks, even. ❞
Soft steps carry her back to the doorway, making sure Emma hasn’t ran off at the first chance she has been given, but nothing seems amiss, so Ruby walks towards the sofa, settling upon it, phone still pressed to her ear. After a yawn is the first sound to pierce the call in a while, Graham informs her that he will carry on looking, and she should get some rest. Ruby doesn’t take long before she hangs up the phone, and settles down on the couch, eyes staring blankly at the ceiling for God knows how long.
Emma woke up the next morning, unsure of what time it was or if Ruby was awake yet. At some point during the night, she'd woken up and took her blanket out of her backpack. She carried it with her as she got up from the bed and peaked out of the doorway. She stayed there, as if she wasn't sure if she was allowed to leave the room. Her blanket stayed clutched tightly between her tiny fingers as she looked left and right.
"Ruby?" She called quietly, in case the older was still asleep.
"Are you awake?"
"Well, that’s what they told me." Belle smiled softly, running her fingers over the chimes once again, "Her True Love, the prince, fought through thick vines and even the Black Faerie herself to rescue his princess."
"Wow." Emma gasped, giggling quietly as she thought about it. She'd heard some fairy tales, but this one was unlike any she'd ever heard.
"He must'a been really brave."
Elliot had taken to doing his work outside today; the office had been noisy, no matter where he went, and he lost focus because of it. He couldn’t help but jump when his paperwork was suddenly coated with leaves, and he glanced back with an eyebrow raised. “Can I— what was that for?”
She shrugged, still giggling quietly. Clearly, the little girl hadn't thought that other people might not like leaves falling on them. In her eyes, nothing could be more fun!
"Just cuz!"
The Witch kneeled down the child’s height, putting on a fake motherly smile. She cared not if the child saw through it or not. Emma would not be able to leave Winkie Country anyways. No one ever left. ❝ What brings you here, Emma? ❞
Emma shrugged, trying to figure out ow she'd gotten there in the first place. She rocked back and forth on her feet for a moment before she finally answered.
"I dunno..." She answered honestly, but quietly, not wanting to admit she'd made a mistake. "I think I'm lost."
Waiting patiently, she felt a sudden wariness. Food would be wonderful, but she couldn’t deny the fact that a good sleep would do well, too. Nightmares made it difficult and lacking places to sleep made it harder. At least comfortable spaces. Warehouses and alleys and breaking into abandoned homes was only so pleasant.
Seeing Emma look over the counter, she chuckled softly watching the girl’s antics. To be so young and curious and not completely aware… Surely more aware than most kids but… not entirely destroyed on the inside. Hopefully Emma’s innocence could be at least somewhat spared… Someone out there surely wanted such a cute, little girl.
”Sure. I’ll bring the food over when it’s ready.”
She continued to peek over the counter as she waited for Cat's answer, trying to see if she could spot their food before it came out. When she heard Cat's answer though, she looked up again and smiled.
"Okay!" Emma nodded before she left Cat's side to go find a table. She paused for a moment, looking around to try to decide before she finally chose one by the window. She slid into the seat, sitting on her legs so she could look out the window while she waited.
Ruby had a feeling that Emma wasn’t even going to make it long enough to get changed before bed, so she ignored the thought as she carried her through to the bedroom. A night in her clothes was not going to hurt the girl by any means.
❝ Sleep it is. ❞
She whispered only quietly, placing Emma down on the double bed. Gently she slipped the girls shoes off of her feet, placing them next to the door for now before pulling back the bedding so neatly made be her Grandmother at some point during the day; not that Ruby was messy, by any means, she just never had time after a night out and dealing with her hangover before she rushed to open the diner. Granny complained, but still managed to have her bed made by the time she made her way back to her apartment, a small sign that she wanted her Granddaughter to stay home and enjoy it, Ruby thought.
Soft hands picked up the sleepy girl, tucking her in the bed carefully. Ruby brushed little tufts of blonde hair away from her eyes before smiling down on Emma.
❝ Sleep well. I’ll be right outside if you need me. ❞
She rubbed her eyes as Ruby slipped off her shoes, letting out a quiet giggle as she lifted her up to tuck her in. The bed was nice and comfortable and the small girl was going to be asleep in no time.
"Mm-kay. G'night."
Emma snuggled into the bed, wrapping herself even tighter under the covers, She let out a yawn and sat up, leaning on her arms for a second to smile over at Ruby before she left.
"Thanks, Ruby." She said quietly before laying back down, finally slipping into sleep.

She tried to keep her giggles quiet as she snuck up behind the other, bright, colorful leaves clutched tightly in her hands. Emma walked up, standing on a ledge behind the bench the other was sitting on. ❝ Surprise!" And with that, the leaves were dropped above the other's head. Yellows and oranges decorating the air.

❝ Well? Who do we have here? ❞
She stood there for a moment, silently starting at the woman before she finally gave an answer. "E-Emma."
With her hands now free, she wiped them off on her red shorts before smiling to Emma. Of course, the answer was a little obvious, even if the girl seemed dubious to say yes. Perhaps the diner was not the best of places to go about secretly picking up Emma, since there were a few customers inside, but Ruby was sure Emma was too tired to care. She very easily bent down and picked the girl up before letting her rest on her hip.
❝ Don’t worry, we’ll have you in bed soon enough. ❞
One of her hands smoothed down the blonde hair on Emma’s head. She begins to carry her through to the small room at the back of the diner, and then through into the connecting inn. Trust her place to be at the top of the building. Thankfully Ruby climbs every step with ease and finesse, she is sure she gets from her daily jogs. It isn’t too long before Ruby comes to her apartment door and one handedly she opens it to reveal an almost plain apartment, aside from the various red accents.
❝ I’m going to have to grab you a big shirt of mine that you can sleep in, sweetheart. Do you want a bath or just to get changed and sleep? ❞
Emma gladly let Ruby lift her, holding up her arms so she could be picked up more easily. She lent on Ruby as she carried her up, doing her best to make sure that she didn't fall asleep until after they got to the room.
Her eyelids were drooping, so she didn't get a good look around the room, but she was still awake enough to feel a bit shocked. She was finally going to get to sleep inside for a while. That thought was enough to make her want to go to sleep even more.
"Sleep." Came her quiet, mumbled answer.
Cat managed to make her way through with confidence. With an air about her that she didn’t care about the looks that the people around them were giving. Inside, of course, she suffered. Hated the stares, hated the judgement. It was probably worse now that she had a little girl with her. Granted, Emma was much too old to be her daughter, but that wouldn’t stop people from thinking it.
Gotten pregnant, gotten into drugs, ran away… People always assumed it was her fault she was out here. And because of them, she had begun to believe it. That she was abandoned because of her own mistakes.
Feeling a hand in hers, she released a quiet gasp before realizing it was just her companion. Easing into a smile, she squeezed the little girl’s fingers to comfort her, leading up to the counter where she placed the bill down and ordered. As the cashier struggled to figure out the odd amount of change Cat had, the brunette knelt down to her new friend. ”If anyone says anything mean t’you, jus’ keep quiet and let me handle it, okay? Don’t listen t’a thing they say.”
Emma could't stop her own smile from appearing when she felt Cat squeeze her fingers. She gave Cat's fingers a squeeze in return, letting out a quiet giggle. As soon as she was aware of the people again, though, she stopped, but still kept a good grip on Cat's hand.
She nodded, pursing her lips for a moment. "I won't." She said quietly, nodding again. "I promise."
She stood on her toes to peak over the counter, watching people run around in the back. After a moment, she looked up at Cat again. "D'you want me to go find a table?"
