Nockfell texts 2…. It gets gay

Gotta tell you guys something wild in the Chinese fan sphere
So some fanartist drew a “sexy” (read: booby) version of a (cartoon) character who is traditionally very non-sexualised. Fans of the character got mad about it because it’s kind of groundbreaking how that character is written and portrayed and this art totally ignores the entire point of the character. They demanded the art be deleted. In response to that other people said, well what the fanartist did may be distateful but they have every right to draw what they’re into. The two sides fight for days and each starts a harassment campaign and even report their “opponents’” accounts.
So far so typical. But things eventually come to a head and they decide that this will be settled by votes - not through a poll. Through donations to a children’s education charity via each side’s portal. Whoever can get the highest amount of donation wins.
And that is how this charity received over 1 million in donations in three days lol. Oh btw the “freedom of expression” side won by a landslide (960k to 40k)
From now on this is how all petty fandom disputes should be settled.
I, a hearing person who likes subtitles just as a preference, shouldn't have to read a subtitle that's obvious nonsense, go back a couple seconds, and listen again in order to figure out what's going on. An accessibility feature should not be the most half-assed part of a professionally made production. Scripted media has absolutely no excuse for not having subtitles or having subtitles that aren't perfectly verbatim. Professional captioning services should be ashamed of the shoddy work that they put out. Captions should be treated as a part of the production, just like filming, editing, audio balancing, etc - and anything that releases with missing or bad captions should be seen as unfinished

I think this is a controversial opinion but why do ppl feel so comfortable shipping characters in healthy, committed relationships with other characters?? I see it especially with characters in straight relationships where ppl put them in queer relationships... Nothing wrong with shipping, but does it have to be with characters who are already dating someone? Idk it just throws me off. I feel like ppl would be upset if it was the other way around
(This is specifically about dino show btw bc I find gia and ben so cute)
is this your first time in a fandom? People don’t care whether characters are in a relationship or not. They just see two (or more) characters that they want to see in a relationship, and imagine things about it/create content for it.
I find the way you’ve worded this really odd. “Why do ppl feel so comfortable shipping characters in healthy, committed relationships with other characters” better question: why do YOU feel so uncomfortable with this?? They aren’t real, it’s not affecting these fictional character’s relationship in any way.
also, the fact that you’ve singled out queer ships says a lot. “Why are people putting characters in straight relationships in queer relationships.” Take a look at the state of representation within media and get back to me on that. Also, fandom tends to be a very queer space, and queer people tend to lean towards queer ships.
“Idk it just throws me off” - exactly. It just throws YOU off. This isn’t an issue, you didn’t need to make this post, and you especially didn’t need to single out queer relationships. I’m not directly saying you’re homophobic, but I think you should reevaluate exactly why you feel so strongly about what other people do with fictional(!!) characters.
also, the “I feel like ppl would be upset if it was the other way around” yeah, if people are taking characters in queer relationships and putting them in straight relationships it removes the representation, and is often done with homophobic intentions. It’s really not that hard to figure out.
I find it interesting that you singled out bengia for this, because chaos theory is a sequel to camp cretaceous, so people had 4 years to get invested into other ships with Ben. And bengia has been criticised for feeling forced, since the show’s main canon ship is queer, and they split up kenji and brooklynn, some people feel that they only added Gia in so that they could have a canon straight ship again.
if you’re feeling “thrown off” by people shipping Ben with a man instead of his canon girlfriend I think that you need to really think about why it’s affecting you, and maybe think about if fandom is the right space for you? Because shipping characters in a canon relationship is like, the most basic fandom thing ever.
Hi! First, this is far from my first fandom, and I'm just pointing out a pattern I've noticed over the years. I don't have any strong feelings about it, I just decided to acknowledge it publicly on a whim. I think I worded things wrong when I said "controversial opinion" when I really meant that I wanted to learn more about the causes behind this phenomenon. (Which is why I used the word "why" and framed it as a question). I apologise for the confusion.
I didn't intend to upset anyone with this because I'm not particularly uncomfortable with this trend, it just throws me off because I often see people who do this also bash the girl in the relationship. I saw this when I was in the MHA fandom with BakuDeku where people tried to villanise Ochaco because she's Midoriya's "canon love interest", then again in the South Park fandom with Style. I specifically remember reading a Style fanfic where Wendy was the main villain and abused Stan, which baffled me even more because I saw people in the comments saying they hated her for "getting in the way of their ship". I love to see queer ships, but I keep seeing some people use those ships to attack or villanise other characters, which I feel eliminates the purpose of connection and love with shipping. I definitely should've mentioned this in my original post, though.
I do agree with you when you say that it'd remove the representation if things were the other way around, which I admit to be a mistake on my part. I've disliked in the past when I've seen acespec characters shipped since I rarely find them represented in media, so I understand how what I said comes off as ignorant and I'm sorry for that.
I only pointed out Bengia because I've been finishing Chaos Theory after a while without watching it, so I noticed ships for the fandom more while it's fresh in my mind. Thankfully, I don't see anyone villanising Gia, but I'm simply curious why it's so common for people to do this. I'm not thrown off by people shipping Ben with a man, I was confused why I've seen this pattern so consistently across fandoms. I also don't have any ill will toward Benji shippers, especially since I remember scenes between the two that I thought were cute as well, but I was curious why people preferred that ship over the canon one. (Of course different ships are preferred by different people, but this was my main thought process behind mentioning jwct specifically.)
I love Chaos Theory, Camp Cretaceous, and the Jurassic Park fandom, so I don't plan on leaving the fandom over something simple like this. That'd be no fun, and I'd likely have left every fandom I've ever been in if I cared that much. I agree with you that it's a basic thing to see in fandoms, I just have a habit of pointing out patterns. I'm personally viewing these ships from a more separated perspective and trying to make sense of them. In all honesty, I used to completely avoid the shipping side of fandoms because I didn't resonate with the romantic aspect of them, so that's probably why this pattern sticks out to me more than it does to someone else. While I feel you've used somewhat condescending language in your response to my post, I understand that you probably got defensive by my mentioning of queer ships, which I commend you for because I've argued with homophobes myself. I hope I cleared things up and that you have a good rest of your day!
