Hah. Understatement of the century if there ever was one. Johnny Silverhand was an enigma wrapped in a mystery buried under ten layers of sarcasm, alcohol and drugs... And trauma, but Johnny would never admit to that. At least not while he was alive... Still, seein' how she'd patched him up, apparently out of the goodness of her heart, he figured he could be a bit honest, not unlike how he was with Milt Nauman. He sighs, his pale eyes staring at her from behind his red aviators.

"What can I say? I'm not easily read. A contradiction wrapped in two different contradictions." At least that's how Alt'd put it. Rogue would've called him an unbearable jackass and left it at that. But Johnny was more than that, his recent free benefit concert in Lake Park, meant to call attention to the brutal methods the NCPD used to quell the Homeless Riots, spoke a different tale.

"What about you, Doc? Are you as clear-cut as you seem? Or d'you have skeletons in your closet?" He lowered his aviators, allowing her to see the pale blue cyber eyes he sported. It was as if he was trying to see into her soul.

Well shit... He might've pushed a bit too hard this time. It was kind of her fault anyways, she's the one who started to grill him on his life and why he set up shop in Omega. Specifically, why did he set up his amps and played his music right outside of the Afterlife and lo and behold he launched into a tirade about who he was, how he got there and the reasoning behind his location... Of course, he took a few detours along the way, including but not limited to calling her hot and saying how much of a shithole Omega was. Those probably did not endear her to him.

"Yeah well, this is on you, sweetheart. You get me talkin' then you gotta let the whole song play out! It ain't my fault you can't listen to the whole song." Was he trying to spin this on her? Yep, yep he was.

"See? Now that is somethin' I can get behind!" Anyone who spent more than five minutes talking to Johnny, or listening to his songs, knew that the Rockerboy wasn't one to fight for shit he didn't believe in. He fought Arasaka because he believed in freedom, and dammit he would die on that hill! In Omega, he fought against the kind of people who endangered other people, the downtrodden, the ones that couldn't fight back for themselves. And sure, that often put him at odds with Aria, but fuck, he respected her a lot to let his problems get in the way.

"Question is... What do you believe in? It ain't the money. Power? Maybe. Still can't figure you out."

So my problem with most ‘get to know your character’ questioneers is that they’re full of questions that just aren’t that important (what color eyes do they have) too hard to answer right away (what is their greatest fear) or are just impossible to answer (what is their favorite movie.)  Like no one has one single favorite movie. And even if they do the answer changes.

If I’m doing this exercise, I want 7-10 questions to get the character feeling real in my head. So I thought I’d share the ones that get me (and my students) good results: 

What is the character’s go-to drink order? (this one gets into how do they like to be publicly perceived, because there is always some level of theatricality to ordering drinks at a bar/resturant)

What is their grooming routine? (how do they treat themselves in private)

What was their most expensive purchase/where does their disposable income go? (Gets you thinking about socio-economic class, values, and how they spend their leisure time)

Do they have any scars or tattoos? (good way to get into literal backstory) 

What was the last time they cried, and under what circumstances? (Good way to get some *emotional* backstory in.) 

Are they an oldest, middle, youngest or only child? (This one might be a me thing, because I LOVE writing/reading about family dynamics, but knowing what kinds of things were ‘normal’ for them growing up is important.)

Describe the shoes they’re wearing. (This is a big catch all, gets into money, taste, practicality, level of wear, level of repair, literally what kind of shoes they require to live their life.)

Describe the place where they sleep. (ie what does their safe space look like. How much (or how little) care / decoration / personal touch goes into it.)

What is their favorite holiday? (How do they relate to their culture/outside world. Also fun is least favorite holiday.) 

What objects do they always carry around with them? (What do they need for their normal, day-to-day routine? What does ‘normal’ even look like for them.)

You're never able to look straight at them. You're certain someone is there, maybe multiple people, but you're never able to see their face, or even if they have one. it's a reminder, you suppose, that not all worlds are conquerable, and not every secret can be brought to light

Mass Effect Verse

Johnny Silverhand, born Robert John Linder, notorious Omega rocker and mercenary. Veteran of the First Contact War where he lost his left arm, as well as a close friend and comrade. John was one of the men who decided he wouldn't fight in the corrupt war anymore, ultimately leading to him losing his arm and a friend. He left for Omega where he stayed at an abandoned apartment for a month. The military and the war had changed his life forever. He changed his name to Johnny Silverhand, his last name representing the cybernetic arm that had replaced his limb and took to the streets with a gun and a guitar by his side.

Despite his hatred of corporations, the irony wasn't lost on him that Arasaka had made his now signature left arm. A cutting-edge prototype straight out of their Combat Cyberware Labs... Johnny would now use to fight back against the corporations he knew were messing up the world.

Using his considerable combat skills, Johnny made a name for himself as a mercenary as a side gig while focusing on his music as a means to attack corporations. While he usually worked solo, he was perfectly capable of working on a squad, provided someone else did the planning. His most notable songs are Chippin' In, Archangel and Never Fade Away.

Johnny has a relatively low implant count by soldier standards. His two eyes are cybernetics, which allows him to aim and line up his targets with "a palpably cold eagerness." he also possesses a Reflex Booster implant. Like most soldiers, he's got a variety of ammo types and skills, though he heavily favours the Concussive Shot, Disruptor Ammo and Incendiary Ammo to supplement his shooting.

Interestingly enough, Johnny does not wear a full suit of armour. Instead, he's had his clothes made (or reinforced) with kinetic padding for his pants while his boots and his shirt/tank top are made of lightweight ablative ceramic. The real standout here is his Jacket proudly showing off Samurai's logo, heavily armoured already, Johnny had it reinforced with a heavier version of the ceramic his other clothes are made of, thus turning it into a Heavy Armoured Jacket. His aviators, which he wears when a helmet isn't needed, conceal his cyber eyes and assist with his aiming.

HOW DO YOU NEED TO BE LOVED?

You've been left beaten down and by someone you really trusted and loved, so now love doesn't come easy for you. You want it to. You want to love and be loved, but you're not sure you remember how. So you need someone else to take the lead. They have to be gentle and sweet and patient. They have to watch out for you, and make sure youre doing okay, because most days you feel a little fragile, if not totally shattered. But someone will come along who will put those pieces back together again.

He remembers that night, now much clearer than before. He'd biten down a momentary wave of revulsion, superimposed over Alt's big green eyes, her tousled mane of hair... He could understand why she didn't talk about her work but still...

Johnny's rage subsides momentarily as he stares at the red silhouette of Alt's AI. "I told you, years ago, I'm sorry. I'm sorry I fucked up and left you." The Hand and him had agreed, better to burn out than leave her behind again. At least Spider had gotten her out, mostly, Johnny had been the one casualty of that damn Raid. Though, he was an engram now, so there was some comfort there.

"C'mon choom. Even you gotta know that saying that wasn't smart. I mean, the guy just lost his input and you can't have some tact?" Sure, Johnny is probably the least qualified person to talk about tact and sensibility but even he knew when to try and be kind. Case in point, right now. The Rockerboy had been convinced by one John Watson to keep an eye on his choom, Sherlock and since Johnny had nothing better to do that night, he'd agreed to tag along to keep the Brit safe.

Inside his heavy armored jacket, obviously emblazoned with the Samurai logo on the back, laid his Malorian. The spring holster ready to drop the gun into The Hand in case things went south and he had to bail himself and Sherlock out.

"So-" His voice cut the silence. "You gonna reassure our pal here? Or am I gonna have to do it?"

"Sorry doll, not doin' meet n' greets right now." Johnny didn't even bother to look up from his slice of pizza. He'd had enough 'chance encounters' with fans after gigs to know that, if they approached, it was because they want a pic or his autograph. Normally he'd be more than glad to give 'em but not today. After a few seconds passed and noticing she was still there, the Rockerboy sighed and finally looked up.

"Alright... What can I do you for? You need somethin'?"

Huh... It was fuckin' weird, hearing Alt talk about Black Dog as if she'd been there in the studio while they were recording. Or as if she'd heard Johnny and Kerry work on the lyrics. That song had been unreleased when he died, he still had no damn clue how it was even released! But still... Alt, being an AI, probably knew about that song. And knowing her, she was most likely using his own words against him. Yep, sounded just like her. So, Johnny being himself, decided to play a little game of his own.

The Rockerboy cleared his throat and after a few seconds, his voice rang out. Not in challenge but in song. "A pattern here I need to see. Keep returning, keep trying to leave." He just wanted to see if Alt really was messing with him like she did in the good old days. To see if there was something of the Alt he loved inside the AI.
