GET OFF YOUR DAMN PHONE.

In the midst of arguably the most influential technical conventions running, the energy in Austin, TX is kinetic. Throngs of people are hurriedly dashing from one packed panel to the next, live-tweeting, posting photos to Facebook and Instagram, and texting their friends and colleagues to find out what’s buzzing next.

The rapid advancement of technology in today’s highly digitalized age continues to be a prominent topic of discussion and debate, and has no doubt been an advantage for productivity. However, it has compromised to a great extent the fundamental person-to-person interaction necessary to attain our highest level of competency.

So how, at this enormous, brand-fueled tech-fest, do we shift our attention away from our interactive gadgets and start interacting with the people around us? 

That is exactly what the orchestrators of SXSW are hoping to achieve through Illegal Art co-founder Otis Kriegel’s recent “participatory art installation”, “TO DO”, a social experiment of sorts that encourages festival-goers to power down from the digital current and get active in what's happening IRL.

Shawn Fanning and Sean Parker who are Napster's co-founders and Alex Winter, who you might know better as Bill from Bill & Ted, but is claiming to be a Producer at Trouper Productions- whatever that is - are having a round table discussion of the Digital Revolution; how we got here, how the world has changed and what are the best ways forward in these contentious times. 

We just want a photo op with Bill! And maybe the dude that looks like Justin Timberlake in that one movie. Wonder if Keanu will be there to support his homeboy? It's not like he's busy on a movie set! Zing!

This one is out of the way, across the river, so plan accordingly!

SXSW Interactive Awards Tomorrow Night!

16th Annual SXSW Interactive Awards are tomorrow night(!) and are to be hosted by Aisha Tyler (Archer!). Fingers crossed for Tool who is nominated for Clouds Over Cuba and JAM with Chrome. Tool's Grant Skinner is also nominated for Atari Arcade. 

And our other fingers are crossed for B-Reel with their nominations for The Beauty Inside and Chrome Web Lab!

For Your Calendar: Featured Keynote, Matthew Inman of The Oatmeal

Matthew Inman is the artist and best-selling author behind the comedy website known as The Oatmeal. Inman championed two successful crowdfunding campaigns in 2012, including"Operation BearLove Good. Cancer Bad" where he turned a lawsuit on its head by raising over $200,000 for charity instead of paying $20,000 in damages to a rival website. In addition, he generated over $1M in nine days to try to buy the laboratory formerly owned by Nikola Tesla, a turn-of-the-century engineer who many consider a geek hero. Matthew lives in Seattle and really, really likes Sriracha rooster sauce.

SXSW ShortReview: SEQUIN RAZE

Amongst all the ones and zeros of the Interactive Conference is still a fresh film fest as well. W&K Portland's very own Sara Gertrude Shapiro brings her short film to SXSW to great reviews "drawing from her own experiences working in reality television, and Sequin Raze, a fictional narrative, feels more real than any reality show."
