Smiling at Trewlaney’s words, Regulus leaned back, regarding her with thought. She was the one who would know but still, he enjoyed the theoretics of future telling. “What if diverging from a predetermined path is just part of some greater plan. The crystal ball might foretell me some future that I avoid, but who’s to say hearing that prediction was what was needed to keep me on the ‘correct’ path, so to speak?” He studied law and could have too much time to spare. Divination was an interesting thought game.

Continuing to lean back, although his gaze was more judging now, he studied Trewlaney throughout her speech and took his time in responding. “I would think you would display your ignorance if you were to believe that my family had naught to do with our continued success. Every advantage must be seized. My House did not get where it is without work and you would do well to remember it.” Amassing wealth, keeping it… it required shrewdness that only a Slytherin could possess. Their family’s near unblemished history in the house attested to that. Their purity ensured that they were able to use their power to protect their interests and keeping purity too, came with work.

Sybill couldn't deny that Regulus was definitely making her think. His arguments were well thought out and she wasn't exactly used to this kind of debate. Whenever she usually tried to talk about these things with anyone but her friends, she could see them turn off, simply nodding along but not really listening. "Its an interesting take" she agreed "though I still like to think we have some free will over our own lives." If everything she had been through was just part of some predetermined path then she wasn't sure she liked what fate had in mind for her.

Part of her was tempted to knock his chair, let him fall back, wipe that expression off his face. He was still so controlled, it frustrated her to no end. "Things are obtained a lot easier when you're already in a place of privilege though" she argued "your family already has access to things most people don't- it's easy to build on something that already has strong foundations." If Regulus thought his family worked hard for things he needed a reality check.

“It’s always been the three of us against the world,” Laurel mused, more to herself as she thought back on how lucky she was to be so close with both her sisters. Of course she had grown up closer to Maren just because Adairia had left for Hogwarts first and had started to do her own things, but she tried to keep in touch with the oldest Linwood every chance she had. And making the Fountain a family affair had helped them all grow together again just like at Linwood Lodge. Drawing herself out of her thoughts, the blonde raised her eyes back to Sybill with a smile, “Hogwarts was always a good place to find the perfect group of friends. But I’m glad to hear you and your lot were able to stick together after graduation as well.”

Syb smiled genuinely at Laurel's comment. She wondered briefly what it might've been like to have a sibling. What they still have each other backs now or it would it have been just one more person for Syb to lose. She didn't need that anyway. She got it from her friends, who were a better support to her than her family had ever been. Her history had also made her fiercely independent, which meant she could handle most things on her own, though it was nice not to have to. "Yeah, I mean I guess its kind of crazy we're still friends" she mused "but also I think i knew when I met them they'd be in my life forever- sometimes you just know." Her life had definitely shifted for the better the day she'd met them.

Ah, freedom… Regulus gave a smile at that thought. The freedom to keep the wizarding world pure, to get the pureblood families back in control because the Ministry could not be trusted. Yes, he would like the freedom to be able to express his views without worrying about some mudblood taking offence. Once the Dark Lord had control, they could fix society so that it would be safe for others to have freedom.  “But if fate can be tempted, is that not a greater enemy to freedom? If the future is to be set, then do any of us have a choice?” It was an interesting question that at times, Regulus liked to ponder. 

Did that mean Sirius had no choice but to abandon his family? That would be strangely comforting.

Confusion flickered over his eyes at the mention of a late rabbit.  White was a lucky colour in Ancient Greece and Rome, rabbits with fertility… that did not seem very relevant for either side. His eyes darkened as he realised and flashed with a cold hostility at the change in her tone. He did not like to be teased. “If you’re content to sit on the sidelines and remain in ignorance, perhaps.” He said, leaning back in his chair and staring a challenge at her. “I for one, do not enjoy being kept in the dark and have no intentions on allowing myself to be caught on the back foot.”

"We always have a choice" even though Syb believed in fate, the people who used it to excuse their actions drove her crazy. "In my experience fate is adaptable" she had seen people's futures change over the years as they grew, opening up new opportunities in their life "it's only as rigid as you let it be- we're all free to change our path at any time- create new destinys." Syb would like to think she had a better standing in this discussion, having more hands on experience with the fates "there are some exceptions of course, things in our lives that are controlled by the fates of others- but as a general rule."

Syb couldn't help but smirk as she watched Regulus catch on to her game. Clearly she'd hit a nerve. Brilliant. It was fun to watch him squirm. "I wouldn't recommend trying to lecture me on ignorance- I think you'll find it's you and friends who sit on the sidelines in ignorance not me" Syb couldn't stand the hypocrisy of his statement "just why are you so interested in this particular prophecy anyway- your family usually turn every situation to their advantage with a flick of a wand- so I wouldn't think it would concern you so much"

Keira was almost surprised when she heard her own chuckle bubble out of her, “yes,” the bell that hung above the door rang, a new customer stepping in, “I suppose a nearly one sided conversation is interesting to watch. You probably think I’m- well…” She trailed off and looked to Sybil, who was watching her with curious dark eyes. They were the sort of color you might find in an owl’s eyes, big and wide and round, almost reflective as they caught the streaming sunlight, little hints of brown and amber circling her irises. It was quite striking, “well you probably think I’m mad.”

"I mean if it makes you feel better, people tell me I talk alot so it's usually me having the one sided conversation with people- and i'd definitely argue that it's not one sided- you're actually one of the people i've enjoyed talking to most today so I reckon that counts for something" Syb wanted to cheer the girl up, she was genuinely enjoying her company and Syb liked to give compliments wherever she could. Sybill couldn't help but laugh at the girls commented. She'd been called that many times before. "They say all the best people are" she smiled, referencing one of her favourite books.

“Probably,” Laurel mused slightly, everything seemed to be settling and people were finally processing all that happened so emotions were all over the place. Glancing up at Sybill, she flet herself nodding, “Oh yeah friends and family definitely help. Merlin knows where I’d find myself right now without my sisters.” They had been by her side since she had first fainted, stayed the entire time she had been in Mungo’s and then they were there all together when they were building the Fountain back up. “As much as I love the support system I’ve got in my friends too, don’t get me wrong, but it’s nice to have that support when you’re home too. I’m assuming your friends have been there for you lately too?”

"It's good you have that you're all close" Syb was almost instantly jealous. As much as she held a grudge for all the lies, part of desperately wanted her mother to reach out to her. It was weird the power family held over you, had many conflicting thoughts she had about everything. Syb thought she should be happy to be rid of them, but she still craved that kind of love, her friends were amazing but it wasn't quite the same. "I can imagine" she agreed, because what else she could say. Laurel's question about her friends was much easier to answer "yeah my friends are amazing, i'm very lucky- we've been friends since Hogwarts and I sort of already know we'll be friends for life." She honestly didn't know where she'd be without them.

Giving a small smile at Trewlaney’s question, Regulus gave a bit more thought to his words and whatever goal it lead to. “I imagine it would end with proper caution. Then the Fates will not be tempted and hopes can cease to be dashed. Perhaps things would be slower to change, but there would be less failure.” Less failure was always appreciated and certainly Regulus wished he had not been so recklessly confident at the Yule Ball. 

Regulus could not deny that his heart leapt as Trewlaney mentioned knowing only a few people who might have made it. True, he was likely to learn what the prophecy contained sooner rather than later but his curiosity knew no bounds. He put on a charming smile and looked across the shop, conspiratorially. “And… have any of them given you any clue as to what we should look out for?” He said, his voice a near whisper.

"I see your point" Syb stated, though she did not agree entirely with it "but at what point does caution turn in to control, freedom is ultimately the most important thing, whatever the cost." Free will was the very essence of being human. Even with everything she understood about fate, she knew that things always chance due to human choice. This is why prophecies were so tricky in the first place and why they should be kept private. Yes, things would most likely end up in the same place, there was no escaping that fate, but think were not always as black and white as the predictions themselves. This is what made the mystic arts so interesting.

Sybill almost laughed as Regulus changed tactics. She was reminded of how calculating he was and if he thought she was dumb enough to fall for his act, he was sorely mistaken. "Well i've heard that we must keep an eye out for tardy white bunny" Syb stated, pretending to play along for a second. "If we were meant to know the contents we would Mr Black" she added her tone now colder.

“Yes!” Keira said, almost surprised that she’d found understanding in the witch. It was odd how much united grief brought clarity and a sense of unity to others, even if they were complete strangers. But then again, the enemy of my enemy is my friend. Well, the wizarding world certainly had a common enemy, didn’t they?

It occurred to her that she’d been keeping the waitress there for much longer than necessary, but again, Rosa Lee’s Teabag was not overly bursting with customers. And the waitress didn’t seem too bothered by it. Keira wondered just how much idle gossip she must pick up, how many confessions she collected like tips and knuts pocketed in her apron.

“I’m sorry, I’ve been so wrapped up in myself,” she said and then extended her hand. “I’m Keira.”

The girl’s enthusiastic response took Sybill by surprise and a soft smile grew on her face. Syb made the decision that she quite liked this girl, at least from first impressions. She was glad she’d taken the extra time with her. That was the beauty of this place, you could meet the most unexpected people, and yes, sometimes getting to know the customer’s didn’t always end well, but it was always worth the risk, especially for someone as curious as she was. Syb could equally be a wonderful and terrible judge of character. Something she’d learnt slowly over the years. Syb waved her hand, signalling that there was nothing to apologise for. “Sybill” she stated as she shook the girl’s hand “I know that as your waitress I’m supposed to say it’s been lovely to meet you regardless, but it has actually been an interesting conversation”

“Even if the circumstances aren’t the best,” Laurel repeated though she tried to keep the small smile on her face, hoping to Merlin it was coming off as sincere and welcoming. She had already affected enough people with her troubles, no need to showcase that to the rest of the world. The community felt different to her after she was released from the hospital, it was now more obvious that people were taking sides for this impending war and she knew everything would be changing now. Not just for her or her family but for the rest of the sorcerors like her, muggleborns and creatures, and she just hoped that at the end of the day she’d be on the right side to protect them. “I’m sorry to hear that but I undertstand the want for things to be busy,,” She nodded, people had ever right to be scared after the stories she had heard of the fight at the ball. “Distractions are always nice in a time like this.”

Syb had always been one to try to keep herself busy. Especially since everything that had happened with her family. Sybill being left alone with her thoughts for too long never led to anything good. She was just lucky that she had great friends that she could completely rely on, not everyone had that. She didn't know if she would still be standing without their support. "Yeah- otherwise I think we'd all go a little insane" Syb replied honestly. She wondered if that was how Laurel was getting through this, distractions, of it she was the kind of person to always face things head on. "Friends help too" Syb smiled at her "and family" she added as an afterthought. Didn't the article say she had sisters? Syb didn't know how to feel that the idea of family had become such an abstract concept to her now.

The extra question caused Lucille to purse her lips a moment. “Oh I don’t know,” She said before letting out a small laugh. “I hadn’t thought that far ahead,” Her eyebrows raised momentarily. “I’m sorry for being such a difficult customer right now. I imagine you’d much prefer I have just said everything immediately. I know that I would have,” Lucille huffed. Her nails tapped rhythmically against the table and she thought some more. “A pastry would be great.”

Sybill laughed softly at the girl's reaction. She hadn't meant to caught her so off guard. "Oh no, you're so not a difficult customer- not by a long shot" she shook her head. She'd had customers before who'd tried to throw tea at her when they weren't happy with their order. A little dithering over an unexpected question was nothing. "Honestly?" Syb admitted "it's better for me that you're taking your time to decide-it's very quiet here at the moment." She noted down the order with a smile.

“But sometimes it is merely tempting the fates.” Regulus challenged with a crooked smile. He had pinned hope on the faint chance that this Ball would have no murders or unexpected disappearances, that just one Ball might have peace. It was a child’s dream, knowing as he did, what was to come to the wizarding world. It would be a fight to set things to right as many had been brainwashed by that old codger, Dumbledore. It would be quiet some work to convince people of the truth now that the lies had set so firmly within them.

Knowing people were avoiding going out after dark was interesting. He hadn’t paid much heed to those outside of his pureblood social circles and in the Ministry. “What was it they promised? Freedom? And the others? No doubt similarly grandiose ideals. That Prophecy must have some pretty interesting predictions to have more than one group after it. I wish I could know what secrets it holds.” He let his voice take on a wistful tone. If he couldn’t get the Order looking at least a little bit guilty, he would ensure no one might connect him with the masked figures.

"Hmm" Syb replied thoughtfully. Perhaps he was right, but then what did that mean for the future. She knew better than most that people needed an escape, for some the ball wouldn't been that escape for the worries of their daily life. If the fates wanted chaos that was also a concern. Syb knew Regulus probably didn't mean that statement as deeply as she was talking it, but she couldn't help it. Would the fates really want evil to win, no she didn't believe that. "But if we think like that where does it end?" She replied eventually.

Syb didn't really care what group had promised what. They was only one of them arranging an attack on innocent people. Of course Regulus would sit on the fence, she shouldn't have expected anything more from him. She just didn't understand how these people saw injustice and just shrugged like it didn't matter. "It's definitely intriguing" Syb agreed "it'd like to know who made it too, I only know a few people capable of making a prophecy- so I can't help but wonder"

Keira gave a weak smile, “no, that’s alright, very kind of you to offer.” She sighed and then gestured to nothing as if it could explain everything, waving her hand around disturbed the dust motes that swirled amongst the tea shop, highlighted by the uncommonly bright London sun. Quite a contrast to the interior mood that gripped Rosa Lee Teabag early on-comers. The customers themselves hung to the shadows, barely talked and when they did their own exchanges were short and clipped. The undertone of tension was a heavy presence on the shop. 

Keira shook her head at herself, some of these people had lost something, someone, and here she was, nervous over an autopsy, something she’d done a hundred times before. “God,” she said, more to herself than to the waitress. “I don’t even know why I’m acting like this- it wasn’t as if I was at the ball myself, I just-” a frustrated groan escaped her before she leaned back into her seat. “The worlds’ gone bottoms up, hasn’t it?”

Syb shrugged as if to say no problem. The girl was clearly still in thought, Sybill was reluctant to leave, not sure if she was done talking. Syb found that small talk was actually a large part of the job, she had never been pressured to rush orders. This place was about the environment just as much as it was the food and drink. It was a place for people to come and relax, catch up with friends, sometimes business lunches. It was a warm place, which is why Syb enjoyed it so much.

"No, I get it" she reassured her "I wasn't there either but the after shocks of it affect us all- I had friends who were there and got injured- they're fine but still- it's just that feeling that you can't shrug off." They were of course people who were worse off, but feelings were still feelings. "A girl was murdered- I think that's going to affect people for a long time" it felt weird to refer to Amelia as 'a girl', but she'd already talked about Edgar enough this morning. She would struggle to continue on that way.

Augustus’ shift at Concordia and Plunkett’s was dragging in. Understandably, people weren’t currently focusing on the importance of music in their lives, or wanting to drag their children to piano lessons either.  He had spent the morning reorganising the charmed radios and placing records in alphabetical order, a range of monotonous tasks that didn’t exactly help the workday pass in the blink of an eye. On his lunch break, Gus was practically running out the door to Rosa Lee’s teabag. Fairly sure that he would get a bit of good conversation with Sybil, who he knew for a fact was also on shift. Sitting down at a table, Gus grinned when he noticed Sybil approach him, seemingly too distracted to realise it was him. “Just a coffee please, and a few more customers who have a passion for piano. Concordia and Plunkett’s hasn’t been so quiet in months.”

Syb hadn't been paying enough attention to recognise Gus on sight, but she'd know his voice anywhere. Her head snapped up from her notebook. "Gus" she chimed, a wide smile appearing on her face. Gus was one of her closest friends and one of her favourite people in the world. They had an easy friendship, one that felt more like family. She hadn't seen him much since the solstice, she hadn't seen many of her friends recently, apart from Tilden of course, but she lived with him so that didn't really count. Syb knew Gus' coffee order by heart. "It's quiet here too" Syb frowned "I don't blame people." She understood why they were scared. "Have you heard anything from Edgar?" Syb hadn't heard back from him at all, and whilst she knew he was family, she was still worried.

It was a process and a half to find her spark after getting out of the hospital. Laurel was still wary of every person she crossed paths with and was always watching for any masked figured to make an appearance, even if she had never seen them before. “It’s nice to meet you Sybill,” She replied with a small smile, something about the name seemed familiar but if she was being honest the other woman seemed a lot younger so maybe she had heard something from Maren about her. Or from someone else, who really knew at this point. “Have things been alright here, you know, after the ball?” The blonde knew the Fountain had been targeted but who knew if these followers of this Dark Lord wanted to destroy any other property in the Alley.

Syb smiled softly "me too, even if the circumstances aren't the best." She vibes that she got from the woman were warm, even after everything she must've just been through. Syb didn't know how she was managed to go about her daily life already. Syb counted herself as quite a strong woman, just look at what she'd already survived, but being attacked, Syb expected she would be paranoid every time she left the house. "So, so" she answered honestly "unsurprisingly people are a little wary still at the moment- but otherwise it's just been like normal- which has been nice in a way- one of my closest friends is Amelia's brother so." Syb didn't really want to say anymore on that on. She felt helpless. There was nothing she could say to Edgar to help him and it broke her heart watching him go through this.

“Yes, I must admit I have hoped that we would have had better luck than previous hosts. Alas, perhaps I let myself get carried away with my hubris.” He gave a self defeating smile at this, easily able to play the role for while they had had personal success, it still was a shame that his family’s very own event had to be destroyed and tarnished. 

“I’ve not heard anything, I’m afraid. No doubt the aurors will want to remain tight lipped until they have rounded up all the evidence that they can gather. They’ll want to be on top of this court case and I don’t see them sharing until it comes to trial or is pertinent to public safety. Still, I wonder if anything will come of that prophecy that was mentioned. I thought they tended to be kept in the Department of Mysteries and yet it seems one mysterious group has stolen it from another.” Prophecies may be a topic that Trewlaney enjoyed, considering her heritage and knowing what others thought about the topic, even seeing if he could spread concerns about the Order, would be useful.

"Nah, I think that anybody would want to believe that- it's only natural" Syb was surprised by how much she was actually empathizing with him right now. It made her feel a little weird. Like she was betraying the people she cared about. She tried to shake off the feeling. Regulus Black was just like the rest of them, even if he was outwardly less cold. He was not someone she should become friendly with.

Sybill had mixed feelings about the Ministry. Whilst most of the Aurors she knew just wanted to make things better, she'd never fully trusted the system itself. "You're probably right- though it would be nice to have enough information to feel safe- people are already avoiding going out after dark" Syb stopped herself before she could continue her rant, this wasn't the right place for it, nor was he the right person. Sybill had been curious about the prophecy. She knew the kind of valuable information that could be on them. If these people were fighting for it, it had to be important. She also couldn't help but be curious about who made it "they put a girl in hospital to steal it, there's no doubt for me that it's going to be used at some point."
