A Letter to My Younger Self
Disclaimer: This is for catharsis and is just a little bit of advice and reminisce on my past mixed with some lessons I learned.
Dear Middle School Me,
You just graduated high school, in the year where nothing has seemed normal in ways that you will never predict. Throughout your experience in school, you are satisfied with what you have accomplished, but it was nothing like you thought it would be. I wish I could speak to you to let you know some of the future, but as that is impossible, I am going to type it as a way to let some thoughts out.
First things first, let’s get it out of the way, you will have some regrets about your actions in middle school. You thought you were cool and edgy for the clothes you wore and the music you listened to, but in reality, you were just rejecting the norm. In the next few years, you will realize that you enjoy much of what you are currently rejecting. It does not make you cooler to reject what you like, you will wish you hadn’t.
Your best friends now will not be your best friends through high school, and you are okay with that. You try hard for awhile to keep them, but one-way relationships don’t work out. You will get great friends later, but it will take awhile. In fact, you won’t meet your best friend until sophomore year and you really won’t be friends until the end of junior year. Also, the people you are hanging out with in the weekends and in the summer of senior year will surprise you. They are not who you normally hang out with, but you will be happier than before. So much will change but it will be better for you overall.
Only one of your main goals will be accomplished, and it’s going to be harder than you thought it would. You don’t have many regrets about the other goals, your plans and wishes have changed. The first one that fails will hit you hard, it’ll feel like the world is ending, but after some time, you will still be standing. What is important now will not be important forever.
You are who you are for a number of reasons and some you have yet to realize. Your now is not your forever. The insults such as “nerd” and “loser” that hurt your feelings now, will be words of affection in the future. You will wear them with a smirk and like them, it will just take time. You will wear them with honor and enjoy it.
Overall, I want to say that you matter. Life isn’t easy, but in time yours will get better. Everything changes, but the changes are good. You will have such a change in perspective that turn you into the person you will become. Embrace it, and enjoy it. You become a better person, you find amazing friends and become a successful person, just not in the ways you expect. Always keep your head up!
Sincerely,
Future You
