Artist Research: Steven Chomacho Nunez

Born and raised in Fresno, California, Steven Chomacho Nunez has become a well known name for locals. His art is known for being a mash up for fine art and impressionism. He creates in a way that reflects his interest in traditional aesthetics that work well with urban environments. He gathers inspiration form both galleries and street artists alike. I am inspired by his ability to provide vibrant content to the community.

Artist Research: Terry Urban

Although little is known about artist Terry Urban, what inspires me about his work immediately was his creative process. He works primarily with acrylic paint, spray paint, stencils and paint pens to create a modge-podge collection of neo-expressionism. His work is made in a way that is totally chaotic, while still maintaining a sense of rhythm and cohesiveness. This style of art is one that I am eager to dive into and see if I have what it takes to be amongst artists like him.

Artist Research: Banksy

Banksy is widely regarded as one of the greatest, most influential yet notorious street artists of all time, his anonymous identity has lead to the mystery of who Banksy is and has given many of his artworks much greater value due to the fact that his identity has remained anonymous for the entirety of his career. His artworks are typically thought of highly due to the unique perspectives he gives us on a wide range of different issues.The artwork titled “Cave Painting Removal” gives us an illustration of a man, a council worker, removing paintings that are found in a tunnel and making sure that the wall filled with these artworks is cleaned up and ridden of any of these historical artworks.There are a variety of different visual language techniques that are used throughout the artwork, these techniques include the usage of color, texture, contrast and balance, whilst also using location and perspective and props in order to showcase the larger purpose and meaning of the artwork. I like Banksy’s artwork because it serves a purpose of often being a conversation piece, while also promoting activism on issues. I am also very inspired by his technique of stencil art. I try to implement this style into some of my pieces.

Artist Research Louise Nevelson

Louise Nevelson, an immigrant from Kiev Russia, made her impact in the sculptural community of art with her eccentric adaptation of wooden outdoor pieces that reflected the style of cubism, reinvented. Her sculptures had a presence that was grounded in the psychological experience it had with the viewer and the artists, rendering her works as being rich in purpose and intent. Sculptures changed at that point on as she pioneered a new way of creating art, which embodied a subliminal and poetic meaning.

Her desire to use found objects came from her time spent with Diego Rivera and his wife Frida Kahlo (Alice Perry ). During a time when cubism was at its peak, what was understood about the style was that it rendered three dimensional shapes onto a two dimensional surface through abstraction, fragmentation and reassembling (Alice Perry ). This is when Louise Nevelson began to sculpt, with an intention to take an art that was typically done with paint, and reimagine it into sculptures. In the years following, her interests in this field narrowed to the art of assemblage, of which she became best known for

As an artist myself, I am always in awe of the dark, saturated nature of her work. It inspires me to work with sculptures with her style in mind.

Artist Research: Dora Maar

Dora Maar, born the year 1907 in France, made her name during the surrealist movement for her photography. During this time, surrealism and photography did not have a relationship with one another because photography was known for capturing the reality of things. Maar took that preconceived idea to a whole new level as she began to introduce art that challenged that very thought. She understood that photography was not meant to be limited in its creativity. The content she worked with played a dance with opposing ideas such as softness and rigidity, light and darkness, beauty and obscurity. By doing what she did, she bridged the gap between what separated photography from any other artistic medium. In photography, although I seem to gravitate toward more vibrant content, I do have an interest of capturing her vibe of soft, yet somber people, places and things. Ever since learning about her work I have been inspired.

Final Theme Project Proposal

After weighing my options for the final theme project, I decided that focusing on furthering my initial theme project of The Test of Time would be where I could thrive with content. I intend to touch on more concepts such as beauty standards and classic cars to further reinforce the concept of capturing things that show things that stand the test of time. I want to focus more on the orientation of how I take these photos as well as making sure my subjects are creatively taken. I also intend to take pictures at different times of day to make sure the audience know that I did not take them all in one day. I want my viewers to feel a sense of melancholy in the devastation that I capture as well as euphoric with the ones who stand the test.

Marina Abramovic

Born in Serbia, Marina made her mark as a performance artist, specializing in the art of feminist activism. Her work focuses on the interaction between artist and audience, as well as mind and body. Recently, the shocking nature of her work has resulted in many people accusing her of being in a cult. I like the shock value of her pieces and have since implemented the style into my work as a student. As an artist myself, her feminine presence and activism are inspiring.

I enjoy this piece because of the gravity the meaning has on the viewer. It is like the domestic shackles of a woman equate the feeling of death, not being alive.
