Artist Statement
Through journaling my daily life as well as personal thoughts and feelings that occur to me at this critical point in my timeline I hope to preserve my present experiences for my future self. I use various media in my journal, spanning from fine arts materials to things that I collect through my day to day. I also seek to prove in this work that art school is not the end all be all of an artists work as many students tend to believe by presenting an unfinished, often ignored medium to the viewer instead of a traditional, polished body of work. By creating personal, individual artworks in a designated space and displaying them to the public, the viewer may be inspired to create their own journal or to perhaps ponder what they events they would put therein.

This past week was extremely productive after our midterm critique last Wednesday. I became way more interested in using my journal as a sketchbook as well as a time log/diary thing. Using it as a sketchbook also helps with days that are rather mundane that lead to me having nothing to write about. I’ve been spending a rather obscene amount of time watching these sketchbook tours on youtube. They’re so much fun to watch and listen to while working on other things and lead to new, inspiring ideas!

Critique today was great in regards to getting affirmation in the direction that I desire to go. Professor Marks was very insightful as to which resources to look into and being able to relate well to the work. From this point forward I’m going to sit down daily and journal what I did, no matter what.

this week during peer reviews it was mentioned that i don’t only have to focus on events that are larger in my mind to make entries about. from this point on i think i will spend an hour a day sitting down and journaling whatever is on my mind that day or drawing what’s around me.

towards the end of this week i started using my journal like a sketchbook in trying to figure out what im going to do with the rest of my semester in painting. i think it’s important to be cataloging my work in this final semester as well so beginning next week im going to photograph my work to insert into my journal!

Since our last meeting I haven’t done much work (that is to say, I took full advantage of my fall break to procrastinate). Today I’ve been catching up and cataloging my days since I last journaled and I personally think the pages are getting more interesting as they go along and I become more familiar with the process.

Concept:
What is your overall concept for your body of work?
My concept for this semester is the recording of time through an art journal. I will convey this by depicting my personal thoughts and feelings throughout my final semester of college, displaying a sense of nostalgia, melancholy, and urgency through visual musings in a sketchbook.
How will individual artworks reflect this overall concept?
Through being honest with myself and open to representing my feelings on paper, as well as recording events as they happen, I will successfully record this time in my life for myself as well as others. By keeping track of time as it passes my concept will be successful.
What changes have you made to your concept since you wrote your statement of intent?
N/A
Formal:
How has the research you have done influenced your goals/intent since you wrote your Statement of Intent at the beginning of the semester?
When I was writing my statement of intent at the beginning of the semester I wanted to only include my thoughts and feelings about this time in my life and the events that are taking place around me. In looking at other’s works and reflecting on my past work I decided that I wanted to record events as well.
How has your experimental work from the beginning of the semester influenced your goals/intent since you wrote your statement of intent?
In the beginning of the semester I was having a hard time coming up with things to write about and work on because I was only consumed with wanted to record feeling. Through working in the journal, I realized that I was having way more fun in the past visually representing what I was doing daily and wanted to return to that.
How will the formal decisions and materials that you choose relate to your concept?
The only thing that my concept dictates I must use is a journal of some sort. Anything bound and able to withstand heavy use. As far as everything within the journal, I am not limiting myself to any specific materials. This way I can change style, materials, and methods in ways that I feel appropriately reflect the entry. Plus journals are far more interesting when one does not hold oneself to any limitations.
Specifics:
What will the final body of work look like?
It depends. I would like to finish the book but I won’t force myself to if it does not feel authentic. At the rate I am working now I feel comfortable with continuing at my own pace (usually two entries a week) until the end of the semester. The “final body” of work might never end because I do enjoy this process and may continue to record my life indefinitely.
What will your personal time table look like for having final pieces or specific amounts of work done? How much will be done by the next in-progress critique?
I want to complete at least two entries a week for the rest of the semester, often I do more than that. By the next in-progress critique I should have at the very least six more entries.
Goals:
What do you hope to accomplish or learn in making the body of work?
I want to accomplish having a personal little time capsule for my final semester of undergrad. Through this I also want to learn new techniques for creating art and having a daily habit of trying to make something.
In what ways are you facilitating improvement in your work?
By working and practicing almost every day I will improve my skills over time and hopefully stretch my creativity in ways that I have not before.
Blog Post | Week 6
This week I focused on getting back to recording events and experiences that I had rather than how I feel about certain things. While feeling is important, I think I got lost in recording musings rather than recording what was actually going on in my life. My favorite works in my previous journals were all ones where I just artistically represented what happened that day or weekend.
Thank God for Inktober. Upon researching some artists through Inktober I found out about a genre of YouTube videos called “Sketchbook Tours”. Artists literally set up a camera and describe their sketching process while flipping through their sketchbooks. This is super cool and will lead to a ton of great ideas and experimentation!
