First Experience with HootSuite

This was my first time using HootSuite and I am actually quite impressed by it. It is such a great tool to use to manage different accounts that you may have for social media. In society different kinds of social media are used to keep up to date with what is going on in the world today. It is also get to use to search something that I may need. Typing in one word and several results pop up for me to select from and I can keep the tabs open for later use and deleting it if I don’t need it anymore. I can see who posted information or comments about the topic that I am searching for so that it is easy for me to go follow them. I previously didn’t know anything about HootSuite but now that I know about it and used it, it is actually quite simple to use.

Privacy and Security on the Web

After installing Light beam on Firefox, I surfed the web. After a while I went to see look at the graph and it showed me all the websites that I was on since I installed it. It is actually fascinating but also scary in a way. It is fascinating because if this was a school computer then teachers and administrators can track what websites students are going on during class time. They can see what websites they have been looking at the last however long they were on the computer. I would say that this could be an advantage for school settings and workplace, but a disadvantage for those who are being “checked”, also it doesn’t a sense of privacy anymore. What I mean by scary is that anyone that will go on my laptop and look at light beam can check what I had been looking at and searching for. Also when you go on one site, it is linked to other many possibilities even though you did not go on those sites. I was on 9 sites and it had connected be with 85 third party sites. Sometimes we save our passwords to emails, twitter accounts and others to make it easy for us to sign in, if our computer was stolen or lost, people can look through Light Beam and can steal information from sites that we have gone on, and it could result to theft of bank information and such. It is dangerous in a way to be searching the web and the internet has its advantages and its disadvantages depending for what use it is for.

Social Media as a Learning Aid

My partner Ivan Bindarovich and I decided to make a video on how social media can act as a learning aid for high school students to use. The video goes through the benefits of using social media as well as it talks about the different kinds of social media like facebook and wikia. High school students are always using social media, so why not use it to their best advantage? We will be going through the benefits of it on our final project, here is just a small introduction.

Power Searching with Google

How would you search for an exact word or phrase? I would search for an exact word by putting quotation marks around the word that I was searching for.

  Example: “constant”

 2. How would you search for something on a specific site? I would search for something on a specific site by typing the word or phrase and then the specific site address.

   Example: sandals:aldo.com

 3. How would you correctly search for a definition? I would correctly search for definition by typing the word define as well as the word that I am searching for.

   Example: define clouds

4. How would you search for a specific product available within a specific price range? I would search the product with the price range with two decimal points between the price ranges.

  Example: HP Laptop $700..$1100

5. How would you search for a specific filetype? I would search for a specific filetype by typing filetype followed by a semi colon with the filetype that you need to search for.

  Example: filetype:pdf

6. How would you include or ignore words in your search? I would ignore words in my search by putting a minus (-) sign in front of the word and to include I would put a plus (+) between the words.

  Example: Chemistry + Equipment

7. How would you find related pages? I would find related pages by typing related before the page that I would like to find.

  Example: related:target.com

8. How would you find a topic, searching all available synonyms of a word? I would use the (~) symbol in front of the word to search for all available synonyms of a word.

  Example: ~Ecological

9. How would you find the time in another country? I would find the time by typing the word time and the country.

  Example: Time Mexico

10. How would you find out how many Egyptian pounds you get for $20 Canadian dollars? In order to find out how many Egyptian pounds I can get for $20 Canadian dollars I would type 20 Canadian Dollars to Egyptian Pounds.

Digital Etiquette

Digital Etiquette is something which people follow in order to use the internet with rules set that cannot or should not be broken. Communicating with other users over the internet could be with good intentions just to have a conversation but others could also have bad intentions as well. The internet is a place for people/users of the internet to express themselves freely of their thoughts on a certain subject or their opinion. Anything that is posted onto the internet, it cannot be taken back. If one would like to be treated nicely with what they post, then they shall do the same with others. Opportunities to bully or harass others on the internet is unacceptable as it is wrong to hurt someone who you have never met previously and use the internet as a tool to support such actions. Having a conversation online is the same as one in person except over the internet you cannot see the person or hear them. There are times where something was said and others had mistaken the real meaning of a word or a thought due to receiving the message in the wrong tone or the “wrong way”. It is easy to expose information about oneself as the opposite person do not know who you really are or where you live but within conversations it is like a puzzle, bits and pieces put together and the picture is revealed. It is important to keep any personal information to yourself and think twice before sending it to others in the internet world which can be found anywhere once sent.
